PETE'S INTERVIEW WITH COLLEEN

[Colleen]

Hi, Balearicans. Right now I have in the studio with me a Balearic favorite, Pete Herbert. How are you doing, Pete?

[Pete]

Hi, yeah, I'm very good, thank you. Yeah, good to be on the show.

[Colleen]

Oh, it's good to see you. I remember the first time I met you was at Atlas Records, way back in 1999. What a great shop, because you co-founded that shop, didn't you?

[Pete]

That's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. There was a few of us involved. That's it. Yeah. Yeah. 95, I think we opened. Yeah. So we ran through to 2001. Yeah.

[Colleen]

Wow. It was a great record shop in the middle of Soho. It was always on my route every two weeks. There were so many great shops in Soho at the time. Yours was really eclectic. That's why I really liked it. Fantastic. And then, you know, I was really a big fan of your work, especially a lot of the stuff that you did with our friend, our mutual friend Phil Misson with the Reverso 68 and Frontera. I mean, just really great kind of new disco kind of grooves.

And you've been on this scene for a very, very long time. And, you know, it's great that you're still kicking it, which is great.

[Pete]

Yeah, yeah. Still going, that's it.

[Colleen]

Now, you have a lot of different things going on. I know you have your promo agency, but you also have your own record label, Music for Swimming Pools, which I believe was the name of an EP a long time ago as well. Correct?

[Pete]

That's right. Yes. Yeah, yeah. That's it. I've managed to sort of put it all in one thing. It was an EP a long time ago and it was a radio show I did for Sonica in Ibiza, which was I feel like that was about 15 years ago, something like that. It was like a weekly show, monthly show. And then I'd always had the idea to make it into a label at some point. And then, yeah, it happened.

And I started the first release was with Phil, actually. We did Reverso 68 EP. I've just realized as well, it's actually that was 10 years ago. So this will be the 10 year anniversary for the label.

[Colleen]

Oh, my gosh. We better get a compilation out before the end of the year.

[Pete]

Yeah, exactly. I literally thought about that the other day. So, yeah, that's one of the

things that might be coming later in the year.

[Colleen]

And you have a new album out as well called Far Flung. Can you tell us a little bit about that? Because it was the name of an EP a few years ago...

[Pete]

That's right, yes.

[Colleen]

And it's now been expanded.

[Pete]

Yeah, that's exactly. It was an EP, a digital EP. And you know what it's like. It's like you blink and you miss those. And it kind of it really encapsulated the kind of sound of the label at the time. It was a couple of years old.

And I've been working on tracks since, and I always wanted to get them out just beyond the digital kind of realm. So it's become an album. There's new tracks and a few tweaks, slightly different versions and stuff. So that is the that's yeah, it's it's new but old.

[Colleen]

And what's the kind of sound and the flavor?

[Pete]

So, yeah, it's let's say this sort of new balearic kind of sound. It's a dance floor stuff, some very downtempo, very chilled stuff, a little bit electronic. There's a few players on there. Robin Lee does amazing keyboard work on there.

[Colleen]

He's great. He's just phenomenal.

[Pete]

That's it. Totally. That's it. And he's he's I've always worked with him over the years. So there's it's yeah, it's a bit of a mix of stuff. And it's kind of a lot of it was recorded in different places along the way, like when I lived in Bali for a few years, some of it's recorded out there, some of it's tracks sort of made on the road and stuff like that.

So it's just a bit of a I don't like a travelogue of sounds from the last decade or so in one place.

[Colleen]

So it's like the international man of mystery sound! What do you mean by new balleric sound to that? That interested me when you said that...

[Pete]

Yeah, I guess more like the, you know, the sort of contemporary sound with a bit more electronic production, studio stuff, rather than, you know, live recordings and things like that, you know, done in Logic, editing, and that obviously with, you know, with people like involved. So yeah, that's kind of my what I was thinking, you know, what I'm thinking of that. So it's like a bit of a new take on stuff.

[Colleen]

And we were just talking before we started recording the interview that you were in Bali for three years just before COVID. And it seems like Bali has a very balearic scene, if I from what I can gather. I've never been there. So I don't know. But it seems like a lot of those DJs are playing there.

[Pete]

Yeah, that's it. It's got it's I mean, obviously, you know, it's a beautiful tropical island. It's got the climate and amazing beaches.

And the you know, the on the West Coast, it's got it's got the sunsets and stuff. So it totally, you know, it was a perfect setting for that. And people coming from all over the place all over the world, just just coming on holidays and that.

And so it's it's it just, you know, developed this kind of scene there, I guess. And while I was there, I was working at a venue there, Potato Head. And we were booking people from all over people, you know, as people are coming across, especially doing tours in Australia and stuff like that.

So, you know, we were getting a really good mix of artists and stuff coming. And, you know, who doesn't want to have a holiday in Bali?

[Colleen]

Yeah, I would sign up.

[Pete]

We were trying to get you over there. I remember at some point some dates didn't work.

[Colleen]

Okay. Yeah, it is definitely on my wish list. But yeah, that but now you're back here in Balearic Britain. Lucky you. And this summer, you do it, you're doing a bunch of festivals. And one of them is Campo Sancho. Can you tell us? I've played there before. But can you let our listeners know a little bit about this festival?

[Pete]

Yeah, that's absolutely so Campo Sancho. So it's the kind of it's grown out of Sancho Panza, which was the the sound system of Matt and Jim. That was, I mean, it was a mainstay at Notting Hill Carnival for at least 20 years. And, you know, when they started, it was warehouse parties and stuff. They did that. They had an amazing sound system at the carnival.

And when they, you know, retired from the carnival, you know, this was, I think, a next step for them that they wanted to do. So they've got this boutique, shall we say, festival in up near Stevenage, Hertfordshire, so just north of London. It's pretty small in terms of festival size.

That's what they want. It's really music-oriented. There's no like commercial stuff. There's very DIY. There's no sponsorship. It's quite family-based, but party as well. You know, it's a good mix. And yeah, musically, it's, you know, it's you've been there, you know, it's on the money. It's like, it's really, really good mix of genres.

But, you know, with their kind of style that they used to have, if you ever went to the carnival and heard their sound system. Yeah, it's all that. And it's kind of this year, there's like, there's a new area, which is in the woods, upwards. So that's, I'll be doing something there on a Sunday. It's on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, end of July. So I'll be doing Sunday as a Music for Swimming Pools takeover, which is like a daytime thing, two till 10pm, I think we're running.

And I've invited Phil, obviously Phil Weiss is going to come and play, Nancy Noyes, and Andy Wilson from who originally set up Sonica as well. So it's a nice, you know, mix for the label and work there for sure. At the festival.

[Colleen]

Oh, that sounds lovely. It does sound like, as long as you have the weather, it definitely is Balearic Britain, I would say on that one, isn't it? Wow. Well, will you be having remixes coming out on your album too? What else is coming up for Swimming Pools?

[Pete]

Yes, so that's the album we just talked about. That's going to drop at the end of this month. I have there's a series of comps, Music for Swimming Pools, volume three is about to drop, hopefully not too far away in the summer, which is a mix of mainly new music.

So it's like exclusive tracks from people that have been on the label before some of my productions. And possibly the 10-year anniversary comp as well that we thought of the other day that that'll be happening as well. And then maybe there will be some remixes for the Far Flung comp as well.

That's the plan.

[Colleen]

Wow, sounds like you have a lot going on as always. Well, congratulations on 10 years of running an independent label, not an easy thing to do. So hats off to you. Have a great time at the festival. And thank you so much for this exclusive mix you've given us as well.
