Vick Lavender: The Musical SuperHero

When you dig deeper into Balearic Breakfast's music, you may find artists, legends, I should say, that will lead you into new sonic journeys. Vick Lavender is one of these people...

1) Dear Vick, thank you for joining us here on the Balearic Breakfast Blog! Your track, Superhero, was issued on the Superhero 2x12" vinyl in 2025, an incredibly powerful, balearic and, also, somehow, alectronic trip. How did that insane and beautiful melody come to you? Did you intend from the start to make such an epic edition with this tune?

Hi Artur, thanks for having me. This may sound a little strange, but to answer this question directly, no we didn't necessarily have any intentions for a specific sound. The SUPERHERO EP is a culmination of ideas over a 7 year period , so they kinda represent different moments within that time frame. Our only intention, once we start the creative process, is to make the best jam we can possibly make.

2) A DJ, producer, instrumentalist, Founder of Sophisticado Recordings Chicago and co-owner of Bridgeport Record Store Chicago, one can say that you're no stranger to music! Can you share with us a memory of the most epic DJ set you ever had?

Lol! I don't rate my dj sets. I kinda let the people do that. Honestly, I always have a great time running dope jamz for others. It's always a privilege to do what we do & get paid to do it!

The places I've been blessed to play have all been special.

3) You recently issued "The Esthetic EP", which, to me, has much more depth and warmth than the "Superhero" double 12" (the latter one being, to me, more "tribal"). How do you choose the sonic palette you want to work with when producing new tracks?

When I sit down & start the process, I usually have an idea. Drums ,bassline etc that I'd like to try out & put down. After that, depending on how far I can go with it, because I'm not a musician, so there are limitations. That's where Justin Dillard comes in. Now, JD is a BEAST & our musical connection is a special one. He takes what I've done & he will expand on it.

4) According to you, what are the three most important things, sonically speaking, one must be aware of when producing a track?

Well I definitely think having basic knowledge of how to get your point across as a producer is very important. Knowing your way around instruments would go far in developing a particular sound that will be synonymous with you.

Also, know your software. Whatever (DAW) you're using. Get very familiar & comfortable with it. Studio monitors & space are very important when it comes to getting your ear used to its surroundings. What your music sounds like sonically is part of your musical identity as well.

5) Can you share with us a few things that will happen in your musical world in the coming months?

Absolutely. We're in the process of starting up Bridgeport Recordings Chicago. The first volume will include tracks from myself, Glenn Underground, Anthony Nicholson, and Dejay Cease. Slated for a summer release. In time for Bridgeport Records' 3-year anniversary.

Anthony Nicholson & myself are also working on a dope project. There's a Sophisticado Recordings project coming as well. Joe Claussell's Sacred Rhythm Music is doing Distribution on that one. Releases on Cateleya Music, Daybreakers Records UK, Mister Bear Records Berlin, & Forbidden Dance music are coming this summer through the fall.

Thank you so much, dear Vick!
