Do we acknowledge this truth? Do we think about it? Do we question its power? Are we able to accept the gifts it carries for us? Do we even perceive the reality of the possibilities present in that sentence? I still try to figure things out as I write these lines. I still try to understand what life is all about... Still, there is that feeling, somewhere, deep inside of me. Still, there is that yearning, the need to find answers, the urge to find peace. It hasn't happened yet. It hasn't happened yet. Who knows where life's path will lead us? We have to believe, right? We have to... After a two-week break, Colleen returned to us, refreshed and at peace, and her selections hit a string, somewhere deep within, from the start of the show. I didn't know what happened, I just felt like I was in a dream, somewhere, above the clouds. I kept seeing Pink Floyd's "A momentary lapse of Reason" album cover in front of my eyes as the show evolved. And every track had that dreamy vibe, that calmness, that never-ending structure. Introduction. – I woke up at night a few days ago, and a question came to my mind. Why are you working on this blog? WHY? I tried to think objectively without letting my emotions get in the way. Pretty quickly, the same, and quite frankly unique, answer came back to me: because of the unity each show proposes, because of the way it allows my mind to travel, because of the pictures it carries within itself each time, because of its philosophical dimension and also because of Colleen's mixing skills, and foremost, because I feel a Soul is living in here, with me. If I can feel it and have these visions, every time, it Means Something. I receive Something. If I do, I bet other listeners feel the same. So I Need to Share that. I need it. It gives me joy; it allows me to share my love for Music. This show is all about Music, Feelings, and emotions. So why should I think twice? I love what I do; it gives people joy, and it brings me a Thrill. And I am proud to share my love for the show online too! There was no denying it. I was addicted for a Reason, a good one, a soulful one, not one that could be easily explained, but that answer just got me back to sleep (laughs)! And I need to share with you the Tremendous body of Work Colleen puts into every show; we don't talk a lot about that, so I'm going to do it right here, right now : Each Saturday, Colleen puts the request line on her socials, asking the Balearic Breakfast Family to post requests that she will play the following Tuesday (this means preparing a picture for the request line and posting it on her socials). On average, she receives 60 requests or slightly more (and, all in all, a hundred comments regularly) ; Then, she decides which songs she wants to play and finds a way to assemble them, musically speaking: she has to listen to tracks she doesn't know, find the records she has, and possibly buy some of the tracks she doesn't have or ask for our help so we can send her our copies ; Colleen must also prepare the structure of the show and take notes with pieces of information she wants to share with us during the show about the songs she's going to play or about her forthcoming events ; Show day arrives; Colleen announces the streaming of the show via a small video she publishes on her socials one hour before the start of the stream; she then presents the show (Live, s'il vous plait , in French dans le texte (laughs!)) and, with the help of Adam, records it (also taking pictures that will be published later on and talking with the Balearic Breakfast Family live) ; Colleen uploads the show on Mixcloud and shares it on her socials. About this episode. – Sometimes, you need to step back. Sometimes, life gets hard and hits you. Then you start wondering about that love affair of yours that ended, or that friendship that didn’t meet your expectations or what happened at work, and it seems it’s always your fault, and you say to yourself: I’ve given my all every time and no one seems to notice the efforts I’ve made. Stop. Right now. Read on. Listen back to the 131st edition of Balearic Breakfast : One of the things « Balearic Breakfast » brought me, on a philosophical level, is that. We Need. To « Find Balance ». What does that mean? It means that while staying true to yourself, to people, to your friends, to your lover, and to whoever is important in your life, you must never forget yourself in the process of giving. First, acknowledge the fact that everyone is different and that what you give will be perceived differently from the way you thought it would be. You must protect yourself while being true and sincere. Thus, if your best friend betrays you, or if you lose that job you’ve invested yourself in for so many years, or if you don’t get the answer you were expecting, these things won’t harm you because you’ll be able to see them in a more « objective way ». You must learn to do things with a slight « distance ». When doing anything, first do it for Yourself. I repeat, and it’s not about being selfish or self-centred. First, do things for yourself, even if you’re making a gift for someone, for instance. Find pleasure in doing things for the sake of it and then give them, and then offer yourself. So, should something happen in the process of giving, you won’t get hurt, you will be prepared for anything that may occur, and you will be able to answer and handle situations on an emotional level... And, of course, on the other hand, if everything goes right, you’ll enjoy the success with a much more relaxed mind ! This 131th edition of Balearic Breakfast brought back these essential and quite philosophical thoughts to my mind as I was listening to the selection made by Colleen. In fact, the whole show wonderfully showcases what "finding balance" is all about, allowing you to see a path drawing itself in the middle of nowhere from the nothingness that once was the rule… : some songs, like "Morgendvale", Mental Remedy's "Omamudia", or even "Music and lights", are a great example of "finding balance". Each of these track depicts musically a certain quest for peace. While "Morgendvale" seems to go from a somewhat darker to a calmer place, "Music and lights" always forces you to stay cool while you want to dance your heart out on the track, this song brings you down while you want to "go at it"; "Omamudia" on its part being a wonderful jazzy track allowing you to feel a sort of "calm solidity"...; other songs, like Lindstrom's remix of "I know there's something going on" or Ashley Beedle's Rework of "My Lady" showcases how older songs can benefit from a modern touch, we're still finding balance ! (laughs); lastly, Colleen's mix perfectly showcases that quest for balance (to me, the "small mix" she did on that show is one of her finest , Gorgeous work here all along !!). Introduction. – What does it take to change things in your life that doesn’t seem to fit? What does it take to identify them? How do you act to become someone better and where are your limits? How do you express what is really important to you? In other words, you feel a change is needed, you can picture it, you can see the path you want to go on, but you must take action to embark on this new journey. How do you do that? How do you embrace a spirit? These are a few questions that are on my mind and I am still searching for the right answers. To me, change cannot be made on your own. Claiming that you are someone new without really implementing changes in the way you communicate with people, in the way you think, or in the way you behave, leads to nothing but lies. And lies will always be discovered. The time has come to switch the button for good. Definitely. To me, and I am still in the process of feeling things inside of me right now, embracing the “Balearic” Spirit, is one of the toughest things one can try to do in his life because : We can’t limit ourselves to the definitions, and thus boundaries, that have been used for so many years. Words are Labels. Words are boundaries. Words do not represent our thoughts or any kind of absolute reality, they are imperfect translators of what we are trying to express, as living souls. So whenever someone tells something, I believe we should be sure to catch the meaning behind the words, catch the intention, and see the person who’s behind them (never impose your ideas for instance, demonstrate why they are true according to you and allow the other person to answer). We should always try to communicate , understand , rephrase , to gently explain, unless we are facing someone who is deliberately “violent” in his communicative approach. Also, we must be aware that when communicating with others, it may happen that people do not really answer what someone is saying but that they are reacting to something that hit their psyche, their soul, so they are not answering but protecting themselves against what they feel is aggression. It happened to me at work once and I stayed firm, I proved my point to a colleague that was thinking that I was making excuses. Then, when I objectively proved him wrong, he explained to me that the way he reacted in the first place was linked to his own personal life. We talked it over, peacefully, and we’re still friends. So the “projective” side of things is a reality when talking to someone, we should be aware of it, feel it, question our way of communicating and talk things over. Lastly, for the time being, embracing a spirit, be it the "Balearic" one, or the one that rocks your boat (laughs!), we need to discover ourselves and open up to other people without being afraid of our imperfections. If someone loves you, he will find ways to lift you up . Also, we should always take the time to observe and feel, we can try to talk and explain things but only if we feel the other person is intellectually open, ready, and this is seldom the case as in our times everybody seems to run a race... To me, being “Balearic” also means refusing to enter situations or discussions, or do things (on a personal or even a professional level) in which we feel we're not being Seen for what we are. About this episode. – With the first tracks of the show being very slow and quite long, and the second part being much more danceable while keeping lengthy musical moments (and a somewhat "ghostly touch"), this 132nd episode really showcases the musical Balearic Spirit that encompasses all music genres. This show demonstrates what Freedom is, it demonstrates the “no-label” reality explained by Colleen when it all started back in 2020. Thus, it should help you to ease down and help you slowly find who you want to be and how do you want to interact with other people! Always, truly and only... yours. About this episode. – Words can not express a Feeling... They can only try... and that is why we should thank them and try not to misuse them. When they do fail, as we do, then music is the only way for us to communicate. This 133rd edition of Balearic Breakfast is all about that feeling, that positive feeling, that feeling that takes you higher to another ground, and Jon Sa Trinxa's interview and mix enhance that wholeness perfectly... This new episode is an invitation to Travel and every song played (be it by Colleen or by Jon) reflected this call (hence the reference to St Exupery's Little Prince, he is present in Spirit in a lot of songs featured in this show...). It is something I feel a lot as a member of the Balearic Breakfast Family, and I came to think about it last night while listening back to the show, even if your requests aren't always played (it would be simply impossible during a two hours set ^^) you can sense that Colleen follows what she indirectly feels coming up from the requests that are being made. It's a very delicate, and almost intangible sensation but I can't help thinking that she takes notes and that she is always questioning what "Balearic Music" is about. And one can hear in the end that she always tries to help us discover new musical worlds, and new DJs, thus also expanding and showcasing what a DJ's mission is... This is priceless when you're really into music! Colleen was in the USA when this episode was broadcast (thank you so much Adam!) but she joined us on the chat while the episode was aired on Mixcloud! Though I knew about him before thanks to his 1975 "Initiation" album, I did not yet have the time to dig deeper into his discography. I always feel comforted when I hear artists having such a broad musical spectrum because it's all about being able to seize the feeling of the moment, it's like knowing all of the colours or the way all independent frequencies sound. Time has its laws, its reality, its destiny, it's an ongoing resurrection... Yet we seem unable to seize the opportunities it keeps on giving us. Whys is that? Why are we stuck in the past's memories when we could embrace the Vastness of that microsecond of new Time? Undoubtedly because we don't question our true nature, its creative side, we live our lives as if they were meaningless, afraid to seize the discrete opportunities showing up on our way. We Think we do things , but we do them without Experiencing them . We do things to prove Something to our parents, our friends; you name them... If we did our best, we would not think of what would become of what we're trying to create, to share, to show . We would simply do it without thinking . But we think. Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 138th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on July 4th 2023. Introduction. – We're all connected in some way. We all experience similar events in our lives though we analyse them differently with our own, let's say, sensitivity. Lately, I was actually thinking about what it meant to be sensitive. A few weeks ago, a friend told me how subjective I was while writing about how I felt about the show, about Colleen, and about everything related to "Balearic Breakfast". I answered her by saying, "You bet I am being objective when I write about the show!" Feelings can only be defeated and manipulated when any interest comes into play (be it financial or even personal, for instance, anywhere where Ego lies, in fact). They can't be faked when there's nothing but happiness, freedom and joy. And this is where sensitivity comes in. When you're not the kind of person doing things for a reason, you're vulnerable because, in this world of ours, people aren't accustomed to the generous kind; they do things for a reason (always taking Great care of their Ego), and when they meet pure souls, they feel they can somehow take advantage of them. So we, "pure souls", must protect ourselves, and that's what we do in several ways I may discuss in more detail later on. But while protecting ourselves, we should not totally close our minds to what lies ahead, and this is one of the most challenging things to do, really, because we Feel everything, every silence, we interpret every answer; while trying to be joyful, we actually may be very awkward, and we know that and every little change takes huge proportions, and we sometimes even hate ourselves for being so fragile. But we must keep going on; we only know how to share; we don't know what it is like wearing a mask; the mask we wear is one... So, to me, being sensitive means two things: accepting to be "naked" in front of people (and accepting to be observed...) but also, knowing what it takes to be naked and where to draw the line that other people don't have the right to cross. Do I talk about this line openly, or do I keep it under cover, disengaging when I feel something is wrong, is another question, of course. But Knowing my inner feelings is essential; without that, I could not engage in society, and this doesn't mean that I can't take blame or criticism; even if it hurts, I surely wouldn't be able to take them if I refused to understand, to experience (sometimes Painstakingly...) who I am. It's a silent dialogue between me and the world out there. And this can't happen if I don't step back and if I don't see things on a global level. If I keep trying to protect myself without allowing the world to step in my sensitivity, I would end up building a Wall around myself... And that is something nobody wants, right? About this episode. – This new episode (the 137th of the series) instantly made me think of that revolving sun, that shining star living continuously without thinking about what's happening around it... Isn't this something we, as humans, should try to achieve in our own lives? Wouldn't this help protect us from society's harshness and, more specifically, from people's aggressivity? And isn't this strange that these thoughts came my way on this 4th of July (wink to the US members of the Family ;-))? With such a visual capability, with its beautiful silences, and its slow start prudently evolving into a more groovy attitude while retaining a somewhat interrogative feeling, this 137th show is for sure an inhabited entity... My dear Colleen, I swear I am objective (laughs)! Listen back to the 137th edition of Balearic Breakfast : The WOW effect. – Today's WOW effect goes out to Colleen's new Remix. Her wonderful take on Jacob Gurevitsch's track didn't come as a total surprise to me... This Remix has something I felt on some of Colleen's remixes, a certain kind of "indirect melancholy" (it's a key thing if you see what I mean...). The only surprise came from the very Balearic touch of the whole thing, which I did not expect from her (laughs)! But we shall investigate this point further on the blog one day; I am already working on it, behind the scenes, of course... Another great moment of the show was when Colleen played Minako Yoshida's song " Town ". What a trip this song is! They also say that life has a master plan; they say that God closes some of life’s doors for you so you can access better ones, later. They also say that no one can stop you from achieving what destiny has put aside for you. They say " Amor Fati " and " Murphy’s law ". That’s ok, and I really start to believe these words. But what they don’t stress enough on, to me, is how all of this should happen. Destiny should not always be a “ Via Crucis ” where you would have to Prove Something to Someone to get the recognition that should be naturally unfurled for you. We All deserve recognition, every one of us, even the ones who are having a tough life. Lately, I felt how much violence there was in our lives (be it the verbal one or even the unspoken, the psychological one) and I felt tired of being often reminded how I should behave or what I should do to get recognition. As a matter of fact, no one should be judged or told what he should be like in order to get respect or recognition. People should first try to understand each other, talk together and work together, improving things, on an objective basis which should be the Person, as a whole. Each one of us is his own little creation, made from life's events and nobody should bear anybody else's subjective cross. Before saying to someone "you should do this or you should have behaved that way" , we all should understand why a certain situation happened, and work our way out, together, using respect and Recognition of our capabilities, from the very start, as an objective basis attached to our person... We need openness in our lives; without that, we cannot go on . We can’t keep on judging, or criticising. Enough. We must take things as they come: “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” So don’t talk crap, don’t make fun of anyone, stop telling people what they ought to be. Support everyone with the Love you are supposedly searching for; Feel every person, and you will be rewarded in return… Know that we are out here... Just as naked as you are... About the show. – First, the Music got me. I felt its openness very quickly. Something I have never felt before. Of course, being there with the Family under our Captain’s musical commandment was a purely magical moment, as always. But still, there was something as Music kept on telling me its stories about "finding togetherness"... A lot of the tracks played during this 138th edition of Balearic Breakfast had that "Big Picture" of people joining together, dancing together, taking chances... So as we were all talking about the songs on the chat, experiencing the Family’s power once again, I said to myself, “One more time, life has a master plan”… and it got confirmed later when I saw Colleen’s picture on Instagram. This Time, and the Chat was a good proof of the emotions we all went through when the tracks got played by Colleen, two tracks got very well received by the Balearic Breakfast Family: Toshio Matsuura Group's "I Am the Black Gold of the Sun" and Skipworth & Turner "Thinking About Your Love". On a more personal level, I must admit that John Grant's "Pale Green Ghosts" was a great musical journey, one I never heard of before! Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 140th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on July 18th 2023. Introduction. – Night was calling Day to quit. Over the mighty ocean, nothing, not a single trace, just the waves, coming, going, dying, slowly renewing. Over the mighty ocean, the Moon, somewhere, the Moon was slowly rising. Before she knew it, Colleen got caught by fear, and the water got cold, gosh, so cold. Would she make it to the shore? It wasn't so far away though; she swam with more intensity but, something, somewhere, under the mighty ocean, somewhere under the mighty Moon, an undertow, worse scenario ever. Keep swimming girl, keep pushing; there is no time to lose under the caring Moon and the now frightening ocean, the dark ocean, the unknown free captivity; somewhere, were you waiting for the Night to come, Colleen? That voice? There's no one around me; it's just exhaustion; yeah, the shore is not so far away; I'm going to make it. I'm going to, and suddenly everything vanished, the most little thing disappeared, got erased from the mighty ocean's surface; the night was howling now over the deadliest of the oceans, and nothing, not a trace, not a single life, just the waves, somewhere, coming, going, as her body was dying, slowly diving, into darkness... Time stopped. When she woke up, Colleen felt a warm yet slightly disgusting embrace; she couldn't move, and she seemed out of breath. "Where am I? What is happening?" Something was glowing in a distant dark, a strong but calm light, yellowish reassurance. Colleen's heart stopped as she stared into its eyes, she knew. "Who are you?!" she asked, gasping for air. "Do not fear, little child; I am a friend; I took care of you; you were drowning, so I took you home. Are you starting to feel better?" Colleen could not stop from shaking in fright; was she cold? There was no way for her to know; she just wanted to hide in a corner, somewhere, immediately. She shouted, "Let me go, please!" "I am not an enemy, dear child; don't scream; I will soon let you go; please, stay calm," answered the low-pitched voice. How could she free herself from the Octopussys' tentacles? They were huge; the whole cephalopod was something undescriptible. Colleen felt sick while the Octopussy slightly loosened its grip... "Don't go away just now, my child! Don't leave me! I have so many things to share!" cried the monstrous yet soft voice. Colleen got away and swam all the way up, up to the ocean's surface, somewhere under the Moon. Day was calling Night to quit. Over the mighty ocean, nothing, not a trace, just the waves, coming, going, dying, slowly renewing. Over the mighty ocean, the Sun, somewhere, the Sun was slowly rising. Before she knew it, Colleen got caught by hope as she reached the shore. What happened? She fell on her knees and started crying from exhaustion. She met something somewhere, under the mighty Sun, on a golden beach near the mighty ocean. Memories of happiness came rushing back, but, ultimately, she didn't know. She was found lost... About the show. – It is always a delight when Colleen loses herself in the music because we all can get closer to her. And boy, does she know how to do that. My my my. This show is another great example of what a great curator and selector can do with music. When she opened up the request line on July, 15th, Colleen wrote: "Do you see a running theme here? As always, the Balearic family didn't disappoint. Inspired by "Yayoi Kusama’s "You Me and The Balloons" exhibition hosted by Factory International (on until the end of August at the Manchester International Festival), Colleen felt inspired as she met an old and distant friend of hers (laughs)!
