Worldwide FM broadcast the 33rd episode of Balearic Breakfast on April 13th 2021. About this show. – Strange was not even a word back then. It wasn't even a reality we would be in. Lost we were all; this is for sure. Absolutely lost. On April 13th, 2021, " Globally, new COVID-19 cases rose for a seventh consecutive week, with over 4.5 million new cases reported in the last week. The number of new deaths increased for the fourth consecutive week, increasing by 7% compared to last week, with over 76,000 new deaths reported ". Some countries, like the UK , were slowly getting out of lockdown. However, others, such as France, were still experiencing these restrictive measures... " On March 31st 2021, Macron announced a third national lockdown, which commenced on April 3rd 2021 and which was mandated for all of April 2021; measures included the closure of non-essential shops, the suspension of school attendance, a ban on domestic travel and a nationwide curfew from 7 pm-6 am. " So, we were all in very different mindsets when the 32nd episode of Balearic Breakfast started, and, listening back, you can feel the uneasiness in the Music (hence that beautiful picture I chose for this episode)... Listen carefully; you'll hear how uncertain this show is and how much Nothing here easily reveals itself (complex rhythms, complex musical structures, etc.). Though the show opens itself a bit towards the end, it still isn't a direct escape towards the sun (hence the title of this post, which works on several levels, too...), and as far as I was concerned, I wasn't happy back then. Exhausted, I didn't see a way out of this maze. The worst was still to come... Still, like all of us, I enjoyed this episode to the maximum; it brought me a good dose of mental escapism and some Musical strength... All in all, and despite Colleen's joyous and younger voice, this show was somewhat "restrained" and kept uncertainty at its core through its Musical reality... I try hard to be as objective as I can. When I wrote, " You'll hear how uncertain this show is and how much Nothing here easily reveals itself ", I truly meant it. This feeling starts from the first song. When you listen to Floating Points – Movement 1 [ 2021-Bandcamp ] , you hear this lingering feeling of someone being lost somewhere, searching for something, an issue, or answers, but Nothing here is clear. To me, this track is an active search, not an escape (read the Guardian's beautiful article just here ). This feeling of research is also conveyed through the second track, Henri Texier – Amir [ 1976-Discogs ] . This impressive and how much modern-sounding track was issued in 1976! Every instrument found on "Amir" has been recorded by Henri, using the "re-recording" technique (to read an interview, click here ). The album was reissued in 2018 on JMS Records. Letting this beautiful moment die peacefully, Colleen takes to a more relaxed track that, as Japanese musical tradition has it, always has that lingering worried touch amidst a more joyful musical moment... This is the very case here with Tin Pan Alley – Yellow Magic Carnival [ 1980-Discogs ] . The Jazz's Quartet band name is a direct reference to the Manhattan neighbourhood block, more about this here . Have you noticed how gentle and soft Colleen's mix has been since the start of this 32nd episode? Here comes another "worried" track, and a very dynamic one!: Santana – Tales of Kilimanjaro [ 1983-Discogs ] . With an impressive lineup of musicians , including Santana's father on violin and vocals, "Havana Moon" is for sure a grand musical piece with a wonderful soundstage and beautiful dynamics, although musically inconsistent according to Rolling Stone's 1983 review. Still... There you have it; when I said, "Nothing here easily reveals itself" , I was thinking about that musical wave, that sun that gets obscured by clouds, that wind that comes from nowhere, the pulsations that, without warning, make the earth tremble in an earthquake before everything comes back to a calmer state... Oh, how well do I write, ha! Here comes, on point, the very relaxed Prince – When the Lights Go Down [ 1999-Discogs ] . I was talking in waves lately, wasn't I? And, just when you thought you'd be in that calm mental state, this track takes you on a groovy journey... What was I waving lately? Oh yeah, with Bob Marley – Exodus (Bill Lazwell Remix) [ 1997-Discogs ] coming down the road... " complex rhythms, complex musical structures, etc. " sorry, saying was the word I wanted to write... Keeping things the uneasy but smooth way (even when she takes the mic, she keeps the musical flow steady...), Colleen chose Smoove & Turrell – Never Wanted You More (Smoove Extended Balearic Dub) [ 2021-Discogs ] gently followed by the epic Stevie Wonder – Master Blaster (Jammin') [ 1980-Discogs ] to keep the fire burning. There is no heavy mixing here; this show might be entitled " The Indirect Fear of Discovering an Uncertain Future " Laughs! I remember how ecstatic we were when hearing that dub version; I was on the moon as I had always loved this song when listening to it in my 20s (the song is a tribute to Bob Marley and delivers a positive message amidst a somewhat worried tonality : "In this song, Stevie Wonder envisions the people of the world coming together in peace, a vision he shared with the reggae superstar Bob Marley. In this world, Zimbabwe is free from war ("Peace has come to Zimbabwe") and Third World countries are lifted from poverty ("Third World's right on the one")" . Interestingly enough, and I just came to think about it but when you think of Bob Marley's song "Jamming" and when you then listen to Stevie Wonder's song, there is a musical continuation here , as the two songs share a common tonality and of course rhythmic structure! This is precisely what makes Balearic Breakfast so important to all of us: we share Music we Love!! Oh, and those dynamics and these effects are in a parallel reality right here! Ending the first hour of the show with Ghetto Priest – Hercules (North Street West) ('Holyvoodou' Vocal Mix) [ 2021-Bandcamp ] , Colleen keeps it uncertain (remember that though the show opens itself up a little bit in the second hour, it still isn't a direct escape towards the sun...) both with Massive Attack – Safe from Harm (Perfecto 12" Mix) [ 1991-Discogs ] and with Lionel Richie – I wanna Take you down [ 1996-Discogs ] ! Though the next track – Parliament – Bop Gun (Endangered Species) [ 1977-Discogs ] – is a funky number, its message fits that 32nd edition very well, enhancing this episode's musical philosophy and this very post's title and analysis a bit more... The "war" feeling felt also enhanced by the following song, Funk Inc. – Just Don't Mean A Thing [ 1973-Discogs ] , and, though the funk spirit did not leave Colleen's fingers, really, The Main Ingredient – Happiness Is Just Around the Bend [ 1974-Discogs ] was just at the crossroads (selected for compilations both by Danny Krivit and Gilles Peterson, listen closely to its duality with that dramatic intro leading ways to a danceable tune)... With STR4TA – Steppers Crusade [ 2021-Bandcamp ] , the flow is still funky as ever, and we, at least, for the absolute very first time here, have an optimistic track. However, as always, a strange wave of uncertainty hits us, and we're lost to the next song, Phil Saatchi – Wheel of Fortune (Bruce Forest Remix) [ 1987-Discogs ] , followed by another strange and not easy to get into, number, Tom Tom Club – Wordy Rappinghood [ 1981-Discogs ] . Listen, how perfect yet light Colleen's mix is here, the absolute Wow effect as far as I'm concerned! As far as this last song is concerned, a great article (that you can read here , using Google translation to get it in English) explains that Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz (from the talking heads), after leaving the prolific band and its leader's influence, went on to record this rap nursery rhyme while fearing not to be fit to record anything better! Worldwide FM broadcast this new episode of Balearic Breakfast on December 29th 2020. The worst year we all experienced was slowly ending. Yet, for all of us, there was no reason to be happy. In France, as in other parts of the world, curfews would be enforced from December 31st... Staying positive in such circumstances was tough because we didn't know what would happen next. In fact, anything could happen... The media were all already discussing the need to find a vaccine. Still, it could take years before this eventuality happened, so another edition of Balearic Breakfast was an excellent way to keep a somewhat positive attitude towards these trying times... This 18th edition of Balearic Breakfast was somewhat different from the rest of the series as Colleen did not take requests, the first hour thus being a relaxed show keeping the Balearic vibe alive and well. The second hour was dedicated to an interview Colleen did with Kenneth Bager, the founder of the record label Music for Dreams. Don't you love it hearing Colleen conducting an interview? She has such a relaxed way of doing it! After so many months of uncertainty, we were all seeing the end of 2020 approaching. So many people had died from Covid, so many Families suffered from the pandemic, from the restrictions, so many companies had to close, so many old people left lonely, empty streets and boulevards all around the world allowing nature to glow like never before... The world was upside down. Yet we were going to celebrate Christmas in a few days. Wow. Still in lockdown at the time, all we had ahead of us, really, was music, and Balearic Breakfast. This show was our Anchor. And it still is to this very day (February 2023 as I'm writing these lines). Strangely, or maybe not after all..., the Balearic Breakfast Family magic happened again in this December's edition of our beloved show. Listening to this show, can you picture the ocean's pounding waves while your lonely soul walks on the shore during the sunset ? ... I get so god damn lonely and sad and filled with regrets some days. It overwhelms me as I’m sitting on the bus; watching the golden leaves from a window; a sudden burst of realisation in the middle of the night. I can’t help it and I can’t stop it. I’m alone as I’ve always been and sometimes it hurts…. but I’m learning to breathe deep through it and keep walking. I’m learning to make things nice for myself. To comfort my own heart when I wake up sad. To find small bits of friendship in a crowd full of strangers. To find a small moment of joy in a blue sky, in a trip somewhere not so far away, a long walk an early morning in December, or a handwritten letter to an old friend simply saying ”I thought of you. I hope you’re well.” No one will come and save you. No one will come riding on a white horse and take all your worries away. You have to save yourself, little by little, day by day. Build yourself a home. Take care of your body. Find something to work on. Something that makes you excited, something you want to learn. Get yourself some books and learn them by heart. Get to know the author, where he grew up, what books he read himself. Take yourself out for dinner. Dress up for no one but you and simply feel nice. it’s a lovely feeling, to feel pretty.
