Crazy how time flies… Hmmm. Let me think. It is the 145th show of the series, which means you approximately hosted 48 shows per year, played more than 2500 songs and went live for more than 290 hours (almost two weeks without sleeping, laughs!)… Pretty impressive, right? “What your show means to me”? Crikey, that’s actually very deep. Where to start??!! To me, Balearic Breakfast is a Safe and Happy Place, a Home (it has now been my Tuesday routine and morning therapy for the past 3 years and has remained something that I look forward to every week). It’s my private space where I disconnect from my problems and it takes me back to a holiday state of mind (sizzling days, sparkling seas, sandy toes steamy crazy nights and freedom of spirit)! But it is also a program with very high and positive musical qualities. A point of reference: Not only music but also a lot of information and knowledge, without barriers. Knowledge improves people, opens the mind. Balearic Breakfast is a perfect mix of many genres all connected by a lifetime of experiences that are so relatable, a proper musical exploration and the best show I've heard since Gilles's 6 music Saturday afternoon mind wander. Yes, Balearic Breakfast actually means 2 hours of great music & new discoveries every week. I mean, really, there are so many amazing tracks, so much wonderful music I’ve discovered thanks to Balearic Breakfast! But this show is also an Inclusive program that unites people around the world in a century of war and division. To me, your show is what “Balearic Beat” is all about. It’s about having an open mind and an open heart to both music and people, losing the ego and yourself in the music and allowing your soul to dance… Every time a Balearic Breakfast show comes on (or even the Saturday postings for requests), I get like a child anxiously waiting for my favourite cartoon or children’s variety show like I used to long ago… When I think of it, I discovered you (I think you popped on my radar through Tim Lawrence’s books) & your show (along with Luke Una on WorldwideFM) during lockdown and it changed everything for me. It was an essential listening moment, bringing love, light and positivity during the dark days of the lockdowns. Actually, a friend of mine put me onto your show Colleen (we both have always been intrigued by the way Mancuso and your good self build a set and the anything-goes attitude to music) and I am now completely hooked. So many positive profound and special tunes! You know, Balearic Breakfast really helped me through the pandemic, it gave me warmth and purpose, a harness in the unknown... Don’t know if I’d survive without you during these troubled times… It was especially important in the early days (a weekly fixture since “summer staycation” that has literally helped me through my PhD!); giving me a renewed passion for discovering music new & old… I went down the proverbial “rabbit hole”, discovering other threads. And through the pandemic, I searched endlessly for creativity and artistry. Through that uncertainty, I became an avid listener. I’ve always valued history and personal experiences in telling a story and you do that masterfully. The show also helped me so much when I continued to work as a supermarket delivery driver. We switched to vans with DAB radio & able to stream via Bluetooth - seems a small luxury but it let me connect to music & away from the constant stream of depressing news. Most of your shows I’ve had to dip in & out of whilst delivering but I’ve also been able to enjoy listening back whilst cooking in the evening. I always discover something new, & maybe something outside of my comfort zone. Balearic Breakfast was also by my side during a time of significant personal turmoil as my 15 yr relationship with the mother of my child was ending and my mum was sick over a year eventually passing away... The music you provided on your shows was 💯 pure light and I’ve absolutely loved it. I listened back to each and every show I missed & loved every second of them (the number of tunes discovered thanks to Balearic Breakfast I’ve played to death is astounding!) - then I discovered the ‘chat’ and all of its beautiful listeners & I genuinely feel part of something very special each week - which I treasure dearly & I will never stop being a part of. It has become a weekly pleasure I always look forward to. Seeing you on video getting into the music, dancing (I’ve been listening long enough to remember when you rocked the captain's hat and everyone was obsessed with your slippers!) all made for the feeling of being part of an exclusive community. Making the odd request of mine you played even more special! Balearic Breakfast is really a 2-hour getaway where I can soak in good music, knowledge and company of people who share the same interest in music, and I’m proud to say that I even made friends too! This led, quite incredibly, to starting a party in Glasgow which would never have happened without the show! Balearic Breakfast has been a huge influence to what I do. Yes, Balearic Breakfast has become a big part of my life... Geez, yes, as I said, where shall I start?! Alright, I’m going straight ahead, without thinking… Here’s what I love about the show Colleen…….I love your cheery attitude 💕…..I love your musical knowledge 👌……I love your passion for the music & the artists 🙏…..I love your mixing 🎧 …..I love your record collection & your music room 🎶 ……and I really love the eclectic (Balearic) nature of the tracks played each week….I can’t think of another show that plays such a variance of sounds without losing its flow…….you have not only introduced me to so many new artists but also to established artists that I hadn’t even considered before… Balearic Breakfast is a great radio listening experience which I haven’t had since the 80/90’s! It’s like an oasis in the desert… So Thank you, Colleen… Like the glove on a cold hand, like the sun on a baby’s skin and a brand new morning on your pains… Thank you for giving us a great radio show (plus your 2 compilations!). Like the wind caressing the trees and a little bird tearing the silence apart… Thank you so much for the hard work that goes into this fantastic musical trip each and every week. Like the waves caressing the so distant shore, I am standing there, waiting for you to appear in my life… Tuesday mornings wouldn't be Tuesday mornings without Balearic Breakfast… I am so lost without your melodies in my mind… You have created something unique that can only grow Colleen, You’re an Angel, and we love you to the moon and back… At night, I call out your name in an astounding silence, reaching out to you, gasping in tearful agony whenever I see you, I jump into your dreamed arms like a dog finding his owner again and the sun shines upon us in a perfect embrace as I wake up, alone, in my despised loneliness... The Balearic Breakfast Family’s magic operated again when Colleen asked us to pick up songs celebrating our Astral Friend (The Moon) regarding the Lunar New Year festivities. Lunar New Year, which began on Jan. 22, is observed widely throughout East Asia and marks the beginning of spring and the start of a new lunar cycle celebrated over the course of 16 days. “The moon is a loyal companion. A new show, a new edition, with new members joining the Balearic Breakfast Family. Can you believe that this is already the 120th episode ?! I just can’t. Time flies at such a high speed I’m mesmerised; we are in 2023 people…! So you might wonder what I’ll come up with as far as this specific 2-hour show is concerned! Well, I feel it’s the right time to focus a little bit more on how Balearic Breakfast may positively impact the listener. It does impact me, for sure. You may have in Mind Colleen’s little phrase, “And remember, just be Balearic...” At first, I took that little phrase as a jingle, a signature. However, it got slowly under my skin and touched my soul. Working as a legal editor, I am, like many of us, impacted by, let’s say, “professional responsibilities”, and sometimes it is stressful. The same tense situations may occur in my private life, as to all of us. And, gradually, what happened is that whenever these tense situations were emerging, I would do anything to ease them out by staying calm and making the best I could to Talk or calm down the people that were “attacking” me. I won’t say that I succeeded every time, but I’m really doing my best to stay Balearic. After all, when you think about it, aren't communication and understanding synonyms of “love”? And since love saves the day, you might just empower it by being Balearic! Anyways, It’s a new objective I’m working on, and I won’t let it go! So next time someone is bugging you, stay calm and reply calmly without ever compromising on what’s absolutely due to you. So it seemed obvious we all needed a new Balearic Breakfast show. And that one didn't disappoint by any means: I immediately felt its unique strength and its inner message: Escapism! We were all impatiently waiting for Colleen to come back from New York. We missed her so much! So when the show started, we were happy as we could be. And this 123rd edition of Balearic Breakfast did not disappoint. Collen paid a very welcome tribute to Burt Bacharach, who sadly passed away on February 8th 2023, at 94. When listening back to the show's opening track and the tribute Colleen made to Terry Fincham's Friend Sean Kay, I felt the urge to share a feeling I had deep inside of me. He was a massive Larry Heard fan and a really good mate it was Sean who introduced Larry heards music to me many years ago. A quote from the past came back to my mind as I listened to this Incredible Balearic Breakfast show (the longest one Colleen ever did as of today...). To a very young Johnny Hallyday (he was 11 back then and had just started singing on stage), the Great Maurice Chevalier said : "Soigne ton entrée. Soigne surtout ta sortie. Au milieu, tu te démerdes, tu chantes." Maurice Chevalier to Johnny Hallyday, 1954 We could translate this into English as follows: "Take care about how you appear on stage. Also, take great care about how you leave the stage. In between, do your best, sing" . I wanted to share this quote with you all because I felt David Mancuso had the Same way of "portraying" what a Show should be. Of course, Colleen followed that path in a Gorgeous way. She always chooses the first and last song carefully whenever she does a set. Both pieces are destined to set a mood. In this case, opening the show with Eva's Cassidy "I can only be me" sent a clear message : listen how beautiful a female artist can sound, how talented and strong she can be... For those of you who know Eva Cassidy's life, these last words may strongly resonate in your souls... The closing song, Nancy Noise's "Kaila", also showcases how gorgeous and profound a Woman's Soul can be... So, the stage was all set up. After an absolutely gorgeous 4 hours Balearic Breakfast show aired last week to celebrate International Women's Day , Colleen returned to us ready to play whatever we requested. And boy, my my my, did we all have some great tunes in our souls lined up for that show! But it seems we all agreed on one thing: we wanted winter to end (it will on the 20th of March, so it's a matter of days now!). Once again, the Balearic Breakfast Family magic did its thing because it's not like we planned anything in the requests we made. The whole funky and very Jamaican vibe came to visit us; that's all we can say! Oh well, maybe some of the Balearic Breakfast members were influenced by Colleen's interview with François K on March 9th, when he explained how he discovered how powerful reverb could be in a track and how he used it when working on his remixes of D-Train (well, I was influenced at least, laughs)! Still, we did not expect such a Joyful and danceable show! Colleen does wonders when it comes to creating a vibe! We were going to welcome Spring and celebrate Mother's day (in England, it fell on Sunday, 19th March, I could not, btw, resist sharing Colleen's picture with her daughter, Ariana !). Good morning! The flowers are blooming, especially these lovely daffodils, and spring can be felt teasing us from behind the corner. The Balearic Breakfast Family requested soulful songs, and Colleen gave these musical selections an aura that would be hard to top. One of the best examples can be found in Thanos Katronis' request: The Chimes' "I still haven't found what I'm looking for". We all loved that request and told it to Thanos when he joined the chat later during the show. He was warmly welcomed and was thrilled by such a joyful balearic accolade! These are truly magical moments that we all keep in our hearts long after a show has ended... Balearic Breakfast is a musical and human vibe; you have to come and join us on Mixcloud's tchat to feel the love flow! When listening to this (already !!) 126th edition of Balearic Breakfast, you can hear how laid-back it is and how relaxed and "open" the selections are. Colleen's mixing skills allowed this feeling of smoothness to come up front and to shine; no matter which song she played in the course of the two-hour musical trip, we all just felt like we were protected in a world of tender happiness (and we all felt the same way towards this show on the chat ^^) I dare say that "Spring's mother love" was in the air (laughs)! We naturally paid tribute to the late Bobby Caldwell that passed away on March, 14th and whose song, "What you won't do for love" has been played during Balearic Breakfast some time ago. This very show also made me realise how much the request line "changed" during the last few shows: that moment, when we were all requesting songs, was also a moment that allowed us to share songs with our balearican friends! The sense of Community became much stronger in the request line lately; we all felt it! Yes, it feels like Balearic Breakfast is the gift that keeps on giving... Just don’t overload - save some for the future :-) And now over to you… Colleen, Instgr., 25/03/2023 Sometimes, life has a Master plan. Sometimes, destiny likes to play cards. This happened on this 127th edition of Balearic Breakfast, believe me! Due to technical difficulties preventing Colleen from broadcasting her show on Mixcloud, we all had to migrate over to her Twitch account (eventually, Colleen had to re-record the show, but, here we are today, all is sorted, all is good, I told you, this is a commune effort)! What an adventure this has been! We laughed so much when we heard Colleen's opening track for Balearic Breakfast! The Twitch chat was bouncing with happiness despite some of us having a tough time connecting to the platform (some of the Balearicans were trying to figure out who actually broke Mixcloud down, I swear it wasn't me ^^)! This show was a real little treasure for a lot of us: the first part was such a warm place to be! Colleen made us discover a 1986 mix by the late and great Andrew Weatherall ( you can listen to it here ) and played the song "Indoor Fireworks", which was featured in it. How powerful that moment was! I must add that the rest of the tracks featured in the first part of the show had a strong musical relationship; they were definitely meant to be put together!
