- Balearic Breakfast | Episode 141 | Facing Yourself...
Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 141st episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on August 1st 2023. Introduction. – Sometimes, when I’m about to start working on a new article, I feel frightened. Sometimes I let myself go, but other times I ask myself questions: Is it ok to write this, will they understand, is it really something that comes out from the music Colleen played or from even something, anything, she said? I always doubt before I hit the keyboard, and then, only then, I drift away. In a sense, I face myself before doing anything for this blog because I would not want to interfere with Colleen’s work. Today was no exception. But, with Sinead O’Connor and Tony Bennett’s passing and with Colleen’s words (not to mention the ongoing support of the Balearic Breakfast Family), I felt, once again, that I may have hit a “spot”… Jim Carrey once said, “Depression is your body saying: fuck you, I don’t want to be this character anymore. I don’t want to hold up this avatar that you created. And the world is too much for me” . These strong and true words deeply resonate within me when I think of both Sinnead's and Tony’s legacies. As it turns out, both of them, along with other artists, refused any compromise. They stayed true to their beliefs. And, of course, facing yourself, knowing who you are, why you do what you do, is essential if you want to share it with other people (this is why I never thought that Serge Gainsbourg was a provocateur…). Being True will cost you, a lot. On many levels. But this is the only way you will be able to keep your head on your shoulders and face adversity or face life. Of course, there will be breakdowns, of course, you will question your place or the reason why you suffer so much. But one day, even through your mistakes, you’ll be able to say, "I was searching, but I did not lie" . And, on an artistic level, only those able to lose themselves in their true self are real creators. Strangely enough, I was talking about that subject a few days ago with the great DJ Marcia Carr (listen to her interview with DJ Emma here if you need some inspiration) and we were both acknowledging the fact that there is no success without loss, and that younger generations should experience what commitment is. As Marcia wrote to me: “There is no enjoyment or pleasure without having gone through any kind of pain. Commitment equates to loyalty, passion, sincerity, dedication and love (care). All of these things you've done for those things you hold dear to you; a choice you made - I certainly relate and am living it with my years of service to the music industry.” So, next time you feel something is not right in your life, take the time to face yourself and try to see if you can improve anything, anywhere, to find your true self. Oh, yes, it is also a form of commitment, but now, at least, you know its possible outcome… About the show. – From the start, we are taken to another dimension. A dimension with an Electronic soul... Songs like "What your soul sings", "Fire on Babylon", "Violet" and even (yes, you are reading this right) "Let's face the music and dance" – with the second part of the show presenting a very engaging musical experience – are all about Facing Yourself, finding yourself and allowing yourself to be true for yourself and to others. Also, Colleen's quick presentation of both Sinnead's and Tony's lives, cleverly presented what it meant to be an artist... I don't want to repeat myself but the requests were absolutely great and Colleen's selections, and the live mix she did, were prodigiously good. Listen back to the 140th edition of Balearic Breakfast : The Wow effect. – Without any doubt, Sinnead's songs are on the top of the list here but we must give absolute credit to Seal's song, "Violet" who really hits the nail on today's theme... Don't worry, come closer. Don't cry. Ahh don't cry. Ahh don't cry. Ahh Get moving or I'll kick your ass(background) Ba-da ba-da ba ba-da, Ba-da ba da Ooohh I watch you comb your hair in different light. You change the chair and seem to think that's alright. I understand, You need a change. When you make that change, Don't look to see I'm alright. I also feel like sharing with you the megamix I crafted back in 2008, dedicated to JTHZ ( Julius Thijssen & Hens Zimmerman ) which contains a small sample of Armenta & Majik's "I Wanna Be With You" (JTHZ used tape to craft their edits, I just used Steinberg's Wavelab ^^). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 142 | Balearic Elevation
Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 142nd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on August 8th 2023. “Style is something that’s extremely important, but it must grow naturally out of who and what you are and what the material calls for. It cannot be superimposed.” William Friedkin Introduction. – Definitions, what are we? Words, who are we? Reality, where are we? Time, when are we? Questions, why are we? From everything to nothing. From certainty to doubt, we play, we gamble, we try, we think we win while we keep on losing the given answers to misunderstood questions. Every conversation is lost; every minute of spoken thoughts is an eternity of forgotten inner experiences. Communication isn’t truly experienced until we’re able to let go of what others expect from us . The same goes for everything else, and I mean it; everything, every behaviour, every convenience, every "reality", lies all around: we believe in what we don’t know . Read that again. We believe in what we don’t know . Let that sink in. Let that float on the ocean of your mind. Does a reality automatically exclude another one? Ask yourself what you really know about words, ask yourself what you want to achieve. Don’t let yourself stand on the edge of situations that may be involuntarily (or voluntarily) presented to you . A lot of what we experience today is a result of badly handled communication skills, a lot of which have been perverted because of social networks that are not always bringing us together, not always "really", also thinking about manipulation here. Stay as much independent as you can, actively independent. Keep on searching for that Balearic elevation. “What if everything around you / Isn't quite as it seems? / What if all the world you used to know / Is an elaborate dream?” About the show. – This new episode of Balearic Breakfast is a growing Balearic kaleidoscope. Every song has an inner undertow (in the lyrics and in the song’s musical structure) calling you to keep on searching where you really want to be. Colleen’s selections and mixing really emphasize this ongoing quest, this being the case for instance with the two gorgeous “small mixes” she crafted in the second part of the show. You should really feel the “Balearic Elevation” while listening to this 141st edition of Balearic Breakfast! Listen back to the 141st edition of Balearic Breakfast : New records. – As Colleen once said, Balearic Breakfast is not "solely a nostalgia show". I have thus decided to add this small paragraph with links to new or very recent tracks played during each show. In this episode, the following recent tunes were featured: Be.Lanuit, Sanito Surfers – El Picador Telepathico : Bandcamp (opening track on the "Ibiza Sunset sessions Vol. 11 issued on Music For Dreams) Panda Bear & Sonic Boom – Edge of the Edge: Pitchfork Foremost Poets – The Richard Long Theory: Bandcamp Goldie – State of Mind (Searchlight Remix): Bandcamp Q – The Voice of Q (though this track is originally from 1982, I believe it must be included here as it has been remastered and issued on vinyl in 2022): Bandcamp . The Wow effect. – Without any doubt, the Wow effect goes out to David Bowie’s “Love is lost” , here presented in its "Murphy's" incarnation. That track made me think about "sadness" and “new starts” and “lost love”. Its strange lyrics and gloomy spirit reminded me how much we’re all so too often toys in other’s people hands, leading me to choose this blog’s title… Events. – Colleen will host "Balearic Breakfast" in August (and the blog will be kept up to date). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 143 | Meeting Harry Charles
Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 143rd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on August 15th 2023. Introduction. – We all know that sometimes, things are meant to happen. That’s how life is; sometimes it throws stones at you, and sometimes it gives you Flowers. This happened to the Founder of Word of Mouth Radio Cafe , DJ, Producer, Curator and avid Selector, Harry Charles . Sharing memories of how he met Colleen on his Instagram , he recalls: “I met Colleen and her husband in Ibiza when, as fate would have it, our gig was cancelled. I was supposed to play after her (huge honour might I add). Unfortunately, the gig didn’t go ahead but that didn’t stop Colleen & Adam from coming down to @womradiocafeibiza which coincidently happened to be my birthday. *There are no coincidences* We spent some time sharing stories and lunch with my family together and I must say it was immensely inspiring to meet and connect. Colleen invited me to record an exclusive Balearic mix and we had a little chat about what we’re up to @womradiocafeibiza 🏝️ I am at the airport in Ibiza about to embark on the journey back to what will be undoubtedly the best musical festival I’ve ever been to @weoutherefest thank you @trojansoundsystem ❤️ If anyone from the UK friends wise is about come say hello! I will be the one dressed up as the sheriff’s deputy 🤠 cutting ridiculously happy dancefloor moves in the LOVE DANCIN’ tent all weekend long! And while you’re here set that alarm for next Tuesday so your hungover festival head doesn’t have to.” I exchanged a few words with Harry on Instagram and he said to me, “It’s pretty serendipitous, I think the cosmos aligned” . Listening to his story, you can also discover a great guy who knows what dreams are made of: work, trust, and dedication! About the show. – Colleen just got back from 2 great summer festivals, the first one being "We Out Here" where she played under the "Love Dancin'" tent along with her friends on a beautiful sound system, and, the second one being the Houghton Festival. Despite this (and with a slightly hoarse voice) she was able to host a show today, playing a few requests and streaming a great interview with DJ Harry Charles! Both the mix and the interview are off the hook; could it have been otherwise when your guest speaks the truth so easily? Recently, on OpenLab FM , Harry wrote " Music is something that surrounds us, colours our lives and without doubt plays the soundtrack to every moment we spend on this planet." This says a lot about him, but have a listen for yourself! Events. – Colleen will host "Balearic Breakfast" in August (and the blog will be kept up to date). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 144 | Balearic Celebrations...
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 144th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on August 22nd 2023. Introduction. – “I read many books, but I forgot most of them. So what is the purpose of reading? " It was the question that a student once asked his Master. The Master did not respond to it instantly. However, after a few days, as he sat by a river with his young apprentice, he said he was thirsty and asked him to bring him water using a dirty old sieve lying on the ground. The student was perplexed because he knew it was an illogical request. However, he didn’t dare contradict his Master and, taking the sieve, began doing this absurd task. Each time he dipped the sieve, he could not even step towards his Master and bring him the water because it fell back into the river. He tried, again and again, dozens of times, but even trying to run faster from the shore to his Master, the water flowed through the holes of the sieve and got lost along the way. Exhausted, he sat beside his Master and said: “I cannot catch water with this sieve. Forgive me, Master, it is impossible, and I have failed my task.” "No - replied the smiling old man - you have not failed. Look at the sieve now; it is like new. The water, filtering from its holes, has cleaned it. When you read books - the old Master continued - you are like a sieve, and they are like the river’s water. It doesn't matter if you can't retain in your memory all the water flowing in you because with their ideas, emotions, feelings, knowledge, all of the books, with the truth that you will find in between their pages, will cleanse your mind and your soul, making you a better and more human person. That's the point of reading." About this show. – This 143rd edition of the show is a special one for the Balearic Breakfast Family because it’s our Beloved Captain’s birthday week (Colleen’s Birthday is happening on August 24th)! As Richelle E. Goodrich so cleverly wrote, "Having a birthday is like reaching a higher peak on a mountain. Pause to admire the view; reflect on how far you have come.” So we were all in a very festive mood indeed (laughs)! Colleen gently dedicated this show to all of the Virgo members of the Balearic Breakfast Family, ending it on a Beautiful song we all know by heart (the chat bounced from happiness for 2 hours straight, I can tell you that)! The Celebration was also all in the music played throughout the show: aren't tracks like "Kaw-Liga", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "City Country City", "Happy Birthday", "Wonderful Person" or even "Talking in your Sleep" celebration tracks on their own rights (you see me coming, don't you)? Lastly, you might ask yourself why I chose this short story as this post's "introduction"... Oh well, you know me, I love paying tributes... All it takes to see things clearly is to make a tiny transposition; everything is in there... And since we're among friends, I must tell you a small story: When Colleen published the request line on her socials last Saturday, Bert contacted me asking me whether Black Masses' "Wonderful Person (Masters at Work Mix)" had already been played during Balearic Breakfast. I answered him immediately, saying: "Go ahead, I'm 100% sure this track has not already been played" ! I told you, Balearic Breakfast is a Family affair; we help one another whenever we can when the show needs it... So, if you want to join the fun, you know what to do and where to find us! Listen back to the 143rd episode of Balearic Breakfast: New Records. – This edition of Balearic Breakfast allowed us to discover new tracks by the following artists: Tasha Lee Mccluney – Undone (from Paul Hilery's brand new Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours Vol. 2 ): " Written by Tasha Lee McCluney and Joey Stec, the track was from The Dependables and Curt Boettcher’s California supergroup The Millennium. McCluney had sung backing vocals for Beth Orton on the critically acclaimed album Trailer Park and also with Heavenly band The Rockingbirds. She supported Primal Scream at Brixton Academy and worked at Heavenly Recordings . She DJed frequently as ‘The Heavenly Birds’ and with Tim Tooher who put together the infamous early 1990s ‘Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham’ gig in Camden. McCluney also released the single ‘Stomped On And Wasted’ as Tasha Lee in 1998. In 2001, Alan McGee (Creation, Poptones) flew McCluney over to LA to meet Joey Stec. The pair hit it off and started writing together. An album of 10 tracks was recorded six months later in a three-week studio session recorded at The Lodge, in Northampton (incidentally the home town of Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours). It features McCluney on vocals with Todd Wills on guitar and Bill Denton on bass. It was produced by Joey Stec and Joe Foster and held together by Ed Ball. The album, Pictures And Postcards, was planned to be released on McGee’s Poptones label but was unfortunately shelved, luckily the recordings were sold back to McCluney for a pound and ‘Undone’ features here in its first official outing." Santino Surfers – Freedom Surfing: Bandcamp Voltage Brothers – Happening in the Streets (Domo Domo Rework): Traxsource ASHRR – Talking in Your Sleep (Fernando's Deep Mix): ASHHR signed to 20/20 Vision recordings: listen here . Events. – Colleen will host "Balearic Breakfast" in August (and the blog will be kept up to date). She will also be featured in these events : 22 August - Classic Album Sundays event online hosted by Colleen ( more info here ) 27 August - Come As You Are, The Refuge, Manchester ( tickets ) 9 September - Margate Arts Club ( tickets ) The Wow Effect. – As often, several tracks "wowed" the Balearic Breakfast Family. Of course, Van Morrison's "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart" is the first one that comes to mind ( "Rave On " was played on the 10th episode - an absolute favourite of mine - listen to it here ). But we also can't forget Ananda Shankar's "Jumping Jack Flash" and The Residents' "Kaw-Liga" that got a nice response coming from the chat! To me, though, the track that blew my mind on every level was Little Big Bee's cover of the Loft Classic "City Country City (Franck Roger Remix)": what a soundstage, my goodness gracious, the modern touch (though the track did not age at all, but you see what I mean) fits the track's vibe perfectly well! In fact, the last part of the show really put the Balearic Breakfast dancefloor on fire: Colleen’s mini mix (starting off with City Country City and including Ana Maria’s request Secret Life, "Love So Strong" which also had a huge resonance among the Family members) was absolutely off the hook! PLAYLIST Van Morrison – Inarticulate Speech of the Heart No. 1 Pat Metheny – Ferry Cross the Mersey Little River Band – Light of the Day Tasha Lee Mccluney – Undone Santino Surfers – Freedom Surfing Da Lata – Ponteio Mari – Free (Ray Mang Extended Version) The Residents – Kaw-Liga Ananda Shankar – Jumpin' Jack Flash Alex Malheiros – Telegramas Para Arp Voltage Brothers – Happening in the Streets (Domo Domo Rework) Little Big Bee – City Country City (Franck Roger Remix) Secret Life – Love So Strong (Junior Style Vocal) Black Masses – Wonderful Person (Masters at Work Mix) ASHRR – Talking in Your Sleep (Fernando's Deep Mix) Virgo – Free Yourself Stevie Wonder – Happy Birthday
- Balearic Breakfast | Episode 145 | Balearic Rootings
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 145th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on August 29th 2023. Introduction. – I already said that before, but saying it again can't hurt, after all. Balearic Breakfast became a home to me. I live with the show, I dream about the show, I wake up in the morning thinking about the show, and when I do anything, I think about Colleen's sentence, "And remember, just be Balearic" . And, quite often, even when I read something, I think about the blog and the next show to come (laughs)! This is precisely what happened yesterday as I was reading Simone Weil's book "Uprootedness", written in 1949, where the French Philosopher wrote: "To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul. It is one of the hardest to define. A human being has roots by virtue of his real, active and natural participation in the life of a community which preserves in living shape certain particular treasures of the past and certain particular expectations for the future. This participation is a natural one, in the sense that it is automatically brought about by place, conditions of birth, profession and social surroundings. Every human being needs to have multiple roots. It is necessary for him to draw wellnigh the whole of his moral, intellectual and spiritual life by way of the environment of which he forms a natural part. Reciprocal exchanges by which different sorts of environments exert influence on one another are no less vital than being rooted in natural surroundings. But a given environment should not receive an outside influence as something additional to itself, but as a stimulant intensifying its own particular way of life. It should draw nourishment from outside contributions only after having digested them, and the human beings who compose it should receive such contributions only from its hands. When a talented painter walks into a picture gallery, his originality is confirmed. The same thing should apply to the various communities throughout the world and the different social environments." About this show. – As always, the show confirmed the feeling I had in my mind; it's not me imposing my feelings (sometimes I have ideas that I don't share because I don't feel the show is telling me that story, so they stay somewhere on my phone!). This 144th edition of Balearic Breakfast is all about being rooted somewhere in a specific time and space frame... As always, we all gathered on Colleen's Mixcloud, welcoming one another, giving virtual hugs, taking the time to talk about the problems we face sometimes (a speedy recovery to our friends who got hurt lately!), about our holidays, laughing together (hello to this little Frenchie, by the way ^^), talking about Colleen's last musical journeys and of course about the music we all love and share thanks to the show. Colleen's Mixcloud is such a nice Balearic vibe to experience! I don't know how to put it, but the chat Feels Different when we're all together with Colleen (I experienced it when Colleen was doing other shows on other radio stations and I didn't feel the same connection. Of course, the Happiness is always there, but, definitely, there is that "Balearic Breakfast Family" feeling when we meet on Tuesdays!!). Musically, and as expected, Colleen was On Point, but I can't help feeling that on this episode, there was something More, that precision took another dimension; it's not just precision, it's the vibe created by the way music is put together. Some DJs are precise, delivering great and rhythmically perfect mixes, but you feel like these mixes lack soul, because, it seems that in the end soul comes from the variations offered by the different musical genres that Colleen puts together for the show... I discovered that when listening to David's "Prince St Reels", some people could say "Oh, yeah, he just plays music randomly" but they are wrong. Keeping the beat is an easy thing; anyone can do it. But taking the listeners or the dancers to another dimension is something else; you have to feel it inside to be able to share it. And this is why I once said to Colleen that I was attracted to her because of her Musical Soul. It's really there on this 144th edition of Balearic Breakfast. It's not complex, it does not show off, it just exists... These are just some of the ideas that came to my mind during the first hour of the show, leading me to choose this title for today's post... Listen back to the 144th episode of Balearic Breakfast: New Records. – This edition of Balearic Breakfast allowed us to discover new tracks by the following artists: Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon (ft. Wiyaala) – Hado Deeli ( Wah wah 45s ) Django Django ft Yuuko Sings – Don't Touch That Dial (Make a Dance Remix) ( Bandcamp ) Axner – Shout from the Rooftop (John Morales M&M Main Mix) ( Bandcamp ) Events. – Colleen will take part in these events : 9th September - Margate Arts Club ( tickets ) 16th September - Parks & Records ( tickets ) The Wow Effect. – Smooth (and sometimes even almost imperceptible!) transitions (listen to what happens between Louis Vega and Cerrone... Pure and absolute craziness, right?), melodies dropping rhythmically (and "spiritually") one after the other, this show is one to remember for sure! The chat absolutely bounced when Colleen played Grecamac's request "Don't Touch That Dial" and other requests, like Simon's "Happiness is Just Around the Bend" really wowed the Balearic Breakfast Family, including of course Axner's "Shout from the Rooftop (John Morales M&M Main Mix)" ! On a more personal level, the track that almost moved me to tears was Delia Renee's "You're Gonna Want Me Back" (Moplen Edit) . That record is so great and, Musically, it perfectly embodies the show's "Balearic Roots" (listen to what Colleen says about it and you'll understand!)... Told you, everything is linked together! After all, it's a Family affair... PLAYLIST David Crosby – Music is Love Sons and Daughters of Lite – Let the Sunshine In Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon (ft. - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 147 | The Soul Cleanser...
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 147th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on September 12th 2023. Introduction. – To a friend who was telling me how much she refused people taking her for a fool at work, I answered, asking, "How much resilience does it take to silently refuse things that impact us without ever telling a word about it and letting things be without going into a fight?" She didn't answer, and I was taken aback by the pertinence of that question, thinking, in the same moment, of course, about our dear Captain... Yes, what does it take to be Balearic? Where do you draw the line between what needs to be said or done and what can be left as it is? I am still searching for an answer... What I know for sure is that there comes a time in life when you don't hold on anymore to certain things, to certain people, to certain situations and there's no hate in there; there is just an ocean of peace and contentment, an everlasting sentiment of "calm ecstasy". This happened to me two years ago... I realized there was no sense in giving a fight or being true when people around you aren't on the same level of communication; when two realities directly collide there is no room for fighting. And the realisation of this just cleansed me... I became more "Balearic" and Colleen's sentence then hit me... This is also more relevant when you think about what life really is, how short and how unpredictable it is..., and how much you need to focus on things that bring you happiness and how much you need to love the people that are close to you, like your family for instance or your close friends ... I really hope each one of you can experience that state of mind one day... About this show. – When I heard the first song, I had a feeling of "gently falling"; it was an absolutely soothing experience. Suddenly, I think we were into the fourth track, one of the Balearic Breakfast Family members (hello @popdiscorules ^^) wrote: "I'm ready for my weekly soul cleanse" , and I said to myself: "Voilà, there you go, that's exactly what is happening right now" . The rest of the songs played during that 146th episode confirmed that beautiful feeling of renewing oneself through music, even in the saddest events that may hit us... (you are in our thoughts, Lee Zee...) I always wanted to share these three books here on the blog but never found the right spot for them; today is another day though. David Mancuso cherished these books and often made copies of them for his friends. If you have the time, read them (click on the images to find out more)! Listen back to the 146th episode of Balearic Breakfast: New Records. – Today's show allowed us to discover these new records: Mildlife – Return to Centaurus ( Bandcamp ) Mimis Nikolopoulos – Amazonia ( Bandcamp ) Mudd – Katanaboy ( Bandcamp ) Mike Salta & Mortale – Yaeyama ( Bandcamp ) Jackie Moore – Holding Back (Moplen Remix) ( Juno Records ) Saucy Lady – Why ( Bandcamp ) The Shapeshifters – Tell Me It's Not Over (Cosmodelica Remix) Gratts – Polaroids (Glenn Davis Remix) ( Bandcamp ) Events. – Colleen will take part in the forthcoming events ( click here to access all the dates ). The Wow Effect. – Very often, but not always, the first part of the show is more on the "reflective" side, while the second one is more "danceable". Today's show did follow that two-part side of the story, with the first tracks absolutely blowing us away (hearing my beloved Elkie Brooks on the show was such a heart-warming moment). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 148 | Meeting Matthew Halsall
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 148th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on September 19th 2023. About this show. – In a recent interview Matthew Halsall gave to 'Big Issue', talking about the composition of his new album, he explained: “Throughout the creative process I wanted to free myself from any rules and formulas and just have fun. I took a lot of inspiration from one of my favourite Picasso quotes: ‘Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up’, so I got all my musical toys out and just followed my instincts.” Hearing tracks like 'Water Street’, ‘Tracing Nature’ or ‘Triangles in the Sky’ (taken from his brand new LP 'An Ever Changing View' ) immediately, and gently, took the whole Balearic Breakfast Family to a calm and ethereal place, close to intangible musical heavens... Also, hearing Matthew's approach to music was a very special moment indeed allowing the Family to ease out and enjoy one of the most soothing shows of the series ever (also talking about Music's healing force on the chat)! Listen back to the 147th episode of Balearic Breakfast: Events. – Colleen will take part in these events ( click here to find all the forthcoming dates ). The Wow Effect. – Today's show was very special as we got to hear not only Matthew's interview with Colleen but also the music he loves, including some tracks played by our Captain on previous Balearic Breakfast shows ( Caoilfhionn Rose's "Paths" being, for instance, included on the ' Balearic Breakfast Vol. 1' compilation ), which demonstrates that yes, indeed, there is a 'Balearic' musical genre! It was also one of these shows that we all love because Colleen had the time to join the chat and talk with us; feeling her presence is always a great moment! - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 149 | Ever Fading Horizons...
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 149th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on October 3rd 2023. Introduction. – How to find peace? Often, you’ll hear people saying: "oh, stop overthinking!" But you can’t, you can't because Life affects you. People affect you. Situations affect you. Your own sensibility affects you, and you seem to be in a position where really you’re never enjoying a free-mind moment. But that seems okay to me since we grow through “reflection”, whatever form it takes. And It all comes down to your understanding and your own experience of certain words like integrity, sincerity, truthfulness, etc. So when your reality collides with another one that you thought, at first, was similar to yours, it seems only logical that you get bewildered and that your mind and soul start asking questions... This happened to me a few days ago, and, as always, I started to think about "slippery people", those lying, those playing games, consciously or not, those pretending they love you while really, all they are searching for is a way to control you or to use you. Still, once again, it seemed my life had a master plan in store as Steven Wilson's new album went out last Friday... When listening to it, its absolutely Balearic message hit me. These deviant behaviours make even less sense if you see life from a different perspective: a huge Kaledoiscope in which whatever you think has begun really just started ending ... We're only passengers here, so why the useless bothering, the lies, the cries? Why do we keep on carrying crosses that we're not supposed to? Don't come here pretending, don't come here lying, don't preach a Reality you never cared about. One day or another, sooner or later, and ultimately, we will all disappear into the ever-fading horizons... So tell me, What will remain of us? Come on, please, Tell me... Once again, I'm wondering, but failing is a form of success, isn't it? So, whatever you don't understand, give yourself time. If your thinking allows you to make Tori Amos’ quote a reality, disengaging you from harmful situations or situations in which you’re not desired or in which you don’t fit, then it’s all good because, in the end, all that matters is finding your own Balearic spirit… " I think that there is a place where she (Scarlet) realizes that people come in and out of your life. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for longer. And all of them make you what you are. You can't separate these people out of you. They form who you are. Even the ones that you kind of say well... you know, I don't know if I wanna be formed by them anymore. But you are in some way. You are. That's why, maybe, you don't have to look at them so harshly because they have affected you. At the end, though, you know... it's us as individuals with our... mm... with our love for the land. For something intangible, that when soul-mates come and go, you're never alone even when you're standing just you in your shoes, because she carries them with you. " About this show. – With all of its musical styles so perfectly blended together, this 148th episode is a real musical Kaleidoscope that exactly matches the feelings expressed in the introduction (can you see the endlessly blending colours shifting on tracks like "Aqua Marina" , "Slippery People" or even "Should sleep" ?)... I almost forgot to tell you that while I was preparing this post, I saw The Light and the matching colours... Yes, once again, life had a master plan... The Balearic Breakfast Family met on Colleen's Mixcloud, Twitch TV, and the Discord group. We all had such a great time chatting about the music, about our collective memories when "Slippery People" came in (we all loved it to bits when Colleen was dancing with her slippers on; it was such a great moment!), or remembering when we were younger, listening and dancing to Soul to Soul's "Back to Life" track! What a laugh we all had! Of course, we were all Wowed by Colleen's mixing skills that really shined in the second part of this beautiful show (listen to how incredibly perfect is the mix starting with Moby's track; what a trip!!)... And I also did notice how much the visual effects made me think, for the first time indeed, of a kaleidoscope! Also, Goldish, one of the Balearic Breakfast's family members, shared great news with all of us, saying, "in Croatia, in the capital city of Zagreb, we are organising a Cosmic Garden Party and if anyone is visiting our small but wonderful country, we would be glad to meet you there" . As promised, you can find more information by following this link ! Listen back to the 148th edition of Balearic Breakfast: The Wow Effect. – The first Wow effect goes out to Staple Singers' "Slippery People". This song brought up great memories on the chat and is closely linked; Destiny really has it, to today's post! The other track that Wowed the Balearic Breakfast Family was Cleo Sol's "Desire", a real and great discovery! I would also like to share with you a beautiful version of "Morning of My Life" from the German Stockfish Records label, covered by "Duo Balance" on the " Art of recording Vol. 2 " compilation. Of course, Soul II Soul's "Back to Life" was warmly welcomed, and Kieran McCann suggested we should see the latest acapella version posted on their Instagram , so here we go! - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 150 | Meeting Be.Lanuit
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 150th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on October 10th 2023. About this show. – With the first tracks played by Colleen, I really had the sensation of a slow and sexy Balearic Swaying! I was ready to title this post "Balearic Swayings", but ultimately remembered while working on it that we had the pleasure of hearing the interview Be.Lanuit did with Colleen! So I had to change my plans (laughs!). Oh well, I'm sure I'll have another chance to use that title in the future! Anyway, that 'Swaying feeling' stayed present until the end of what really was a Beautiful show! Listen to all of the songs (even the more "funky” ones like “Standing on the Verge of Getting It On” or the great "Hold on to it", including of course Magnon's "Space Love") and you'll feel that cool rhythm inviting you to move your body from left to right in a never-ending dance! Listen back to the 149th edition of Balearic Breakfast: The Wow effect. – The Balearic Familly just loved that 149th edition of Balearic Breakfast. As far as the tracks played in the first part are concerned, some of them really got our attention! Tracks like The Groovers ‘Where You Belong’ (which made me think about Barry White's "Never gonna give you up", until Rick Van Veen told me the track used was Dionne Warwick's "Move Me No Mountains"), Jezebel – Swamp Shuffle's (which includes Gerry Rafferty 's "Get It Right Next Time") really gave us goosebumps! Also, Colleen managed to keep Balearic Breakfast's musical unity and structure alive and well in the first hour of the show; this might seem "nothing special" to you, but when you think about it this show has a soul of its own and respecting it and keeping its vibe alive in just one hour is something that must be praised here (Colleen wasn't presenting this one live due to her travelling but, as always when these situations occur, she prerecords the episode and invites an artist to a friendly chinwag ^^)! We also loved the laid-back, gentle and pictural interview the Spanish DJ Be.Lanuit did with Colleen, showcasing, while presenting his new album HIPPIE PICASSO (available to listen on all major platforms), how much art (in this case Pablo PIcasso's influence ) and music are linked (this made me think of how much music inspires me when I write my own texts, music is such a great conveyer of emotions!). Musically, the Balearic Breakfast Family was in awe and really dug the selection Be.Lanuit did in the altruistic and cool mix he crafted (absolutely keeping the "Balearic Swayings" vibes on, laughs!), including tracks like Colleen's remix "Elevation in minor" and the great "Madre and Padre" by Lova (for those of you who are interested, you can read my interview with Davide here ). This beautiful moment brought some of the Balearic Breakfast family members some new dreams to achieve, like djing in Ibiza for instance! Balearic Breakfast is such a great dream purveyor! - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 151 | Be your own Journey...
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 151st episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on October 17th 2023. About this show. – The first ethereal tracks played by Colleen in this 150th edition of Balearic Breakfast make you feel like you're waking up, surrounded by clouds, somewhere, in an unknown space ( King Imagine – Love Theme ). In the distance, you see a beautiful girl walking alone, wearing a drape ( Laurindo Almeida – The Summer Knows ); she looks at you ( Lexx – Here and Now ). You feel a light sadness there ( Finis Africae – El Pulso de la Madera ), a presence, as you take her delicate hand. "It's okay to be sad, you know?" she tells you with a light smile ( Yasushi de – A Place in the Sun (Kaoru Inoue Remix) ). Walking on by her side without knowing where destiny will take you ( George Koutalieris – Silent Messages ), you don't dare say a word when, unexpectedly, you feel another presence in the air... An eagle flies by, and you watch as it travels through the unknown, somehow guiding you ( Abba – Eagle )... With its long, unpredictable, adventurous and always "dreamy" soundscapes, this episode of Balearic Breakfast encourages you to be your own journey . Whatever happens, allow yourself to travel inside of your own inner existence. Free your emotions, search for your inner child, your soul, allow yourself to discover things you'd never thought might exist, allow yourself to fall down on your ground and to live new experiences, never surrendering to the world's noise... The Balearic Breakfast Familly gathered together when Colleen posted the request line on her socials on Saturday 14th October and made incredibly great requests, allowing our beloved Captain to present another of these shows with a Musical Soul of its own. The musical unity presented here is absolutely unparalleled... I just came to think about it but what a splendid way of celebrating Balearic Breakfast's 150th episode!! Listen back to the 150th edition of Balearic Breakfast: The Wow effect. – We all were Wowed several times during this show, as always! I got very emotional when hearing my request followed by Rayko's Cocktail Disco Edit of Roberto Carlos' song "Amigo", I recognised a familiar tune also found in Dalida's famous song, " Salma Ya Salama " and loved the song even more when my dear Ana translated some of its lyrics on the chat! Such a gorgeous song about Friendship! The Balearic Breakfast Familly also absolutely loved Colleen's new 'Cosmodelica' remix of David Holmes ft Raven Violet's track, "Stop Apologising"! What a trip this new remix is! New tracks. – This 150th edition of Balearic Breakfast allowed us to discover the following new tracks: Lexx – Here and Now ( Bandcamp ); Finis Africae – El Pulso de la Madera ( Bandcamp ); Yasushi de – A Place in the Sun (Kaoru Inoue Remix) ( Bandcamp ); George Koutalieris – Silent Messages ( Bandcamp ); Asha Puthli – Lies (Kraak & Smaak Remix) ( Bandcamp ); Gigi Testa – Summer Snow ( Bandcamp ); David Holmes ft Raven Violet – Stop Apologising (Cosmodelica Remix) ( Bandcamp ); Manabu Nagayama – Light & Shadow (Masalo Version) ( Bandcamp ). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 152 | I'm black and I'm Proud
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 152nd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on October 24th 2023. About this show. – Black History Month is celebrated in the United Kingdom throughout October but initially originated in the United States as " African-American History Month", this year marking its 53rd Anniversary (first celebrated on 2nd January to 28th February 1970 – more about the historical aspects here & there ). This particular time aims to honour African Americans' contributions and recognise their sacrifices. Unbelievably, and as we all know it, the black community keeps paying a high and unjustified price at the hands of stubborn and hateful people worldwide. We all have in mind the unjustified deaths of black people that happened (and that are happening) in their own country, the United States of America and we can't forget how much History has been excruciatingly and painfully brutal to our brothers and sisters (I can only highly recommend that you take the time to read Ibram X. Kendi's astoundingly great book, Stamped from the Beginning , see below). With the hope that these painful times will end soon, we will all stand tall whenever Racism shows its hideous face, saying, united as one: "I'm black, and I'm Proud" . As last year, Colleen kindly asked us, on Saturday, 21st October, to request songs paying tribute to Black Musicianship worldwide. The Balearic Breakfast Family answered as one, requesting more than 70 songs all in all... If you never took the time, go ahead and dive into Colleen's comments section on Facebook and Instagram; it's an open treasure. We're not hiding our Knowledge or our love for Music, Especially when it's coming out from our black friend's souls... Colleen delivered a Soulful (almost laid-back) show, and you could feel its "solidity" as it took you by surprise (several times actually and right to its end...), showcasing, once again..., that Music is a Full Part of Humanity's History. A show to remember for sure... Listen back to the 151st episode of Balearic Breakfast: The Wow Effect. – From Nina Simone's live rendition of "Young, gifted and black" , to Yothu Yindi's live version of "Solid Rock", this show beautifully showcases Colleen's powerful approach to Music. The Message is, of course in the Music, in the Lyrics, and, if you need to understand why we're so close to Colleen, there's enough evidence here showing you how meaningful her choices are. The Balearic Breakfast Family was wowed (and wowed itself ^^) several times, as always, but more specifically by three songs which we didn't hear in these versions before: Earth Wind & Fire – Fantasy (Blaze Shelter DJ Mix), Ballistic Brothers – Blacker and, lastly, Joubert Singers – Stand on the Word (Original)! If you want to buy these records, head to this post's Gallery and Stories section, where I put the Discogs links! Also sharing with you here David Mancuso's Last Loft Party at Prince St (known as the Prince St Reels), where he played "Stand on the World" to an ecstatic audience! - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 153 | A Balearic Halloween...
Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 153rd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on October 31st 2023. You're travelling through another dimension – a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's a signpost up ahead: your next stop: the Twilight Zone! You unlock this door with the key of imagination... Good evening. And Welcome to a new episode of the Twilight Zone. Tonight, we're going to meet Colleen, a ship's captain whose destiny will forever change as she will be thrown, without even knowing it, into the Twilight Zone... The invisible friend... – April 20th 1880. In the distance, somewhere, far away from land, the Balearic Breakfast ship was facing a somewhat calm sea. Its Captain, Colleen Murphy, was heading south, searching for a small island called « Antonio Bay » so the crew could take a few days off . Watching the sun going down, Colleen decided to take a break, just before the night ; it would be a long journey to the next stop, she knew it. But, as always, she stayed true to her beliefs: not a single word to anyone about the lingering fear there, somewhere, inside. And remember, just be Balearic , that’s all there was to it. Always and forever. The warm Coffee brought a nice dose of confidence to the Balearic Captain, making her feel refreshed and ready for the next trip’s leg. Taking the con, Colleen disengaged the automatic pilot ; she always preferred to do it the « old fashioned way», laughing to herself as she felt the huge ship’s strength coming through the wheel. The night was slowly coming down, and, suddenly , the Balearic Breakfast ship was engulfed in darkness, with only a handful of stars shining bright in the sky. 11:55, almost midnight. Enough time for one more story. One more story before 12:00, just to keep us warm. In five minutes, it will be April 21st . One hundred years ago, on April 21st , out in the waters around Spivey Point, a small clipper ship drew toward land. Hello Colleen, said a familiar voice, stepping into the quarterdeck . Is everything alright? Suddenly, out of the night, the fog rolled in. For a moment, they could see nothing, not a foot in front of them. I’m afraid we have a problem, Artur. The fog just got so thick that I can’t see anything. Can you please take the con? I need to check that we’re going in the right direction! Then, they saw a light. By God, it was a fire burning on the shore, strong enough to penetrate the swirling mist. They steered a course toward the light. Turn To Port Artur! Turn To Port!! But it was a campfire, like this one. We’re going to crash ourselves !! The ship crashed against the rocks, the hull sheared in two, masts snapped like a twig. The wreckage sank, with all the men aboard. At the bottom of the sea, lay the Elizabeth Dane, with her crew, their lungs filled with salt water, their eyes open, staring to the darkness. And above, as suddenly as it come, the fog lifted, receded back across the ocean and never came again. But it is told, by the fishermen, and their fathers and grandfathers, that when the fog returns to Antonio Bay, the men at the bottom of the sea, out in the water by Spivey Point will rise up and search for the campfire that led them to their dark, icy death. [bells ring distantly] 12:00, April 21st . AAAAAAAAAH !!! Penetrating the night, Colleen’s scream lost itself in darkness. Colleen! Colleen !! It’s Okay, I’m here! Calm down, you were having a nightmare, Calm down!! Everything is OK , we’re safe!! Retaking her breath , trying to understand what just happened, Colleen started crying ; the lion cub tried to reassure her the best he could. They both stayed petrified by the deafening sound of the ship crashing, sinking into its eternity. Suddenly, hearing some joyful noise in the close distance, Colleen asked in panic: « What’s that ?! » The Lioncub looked into her eyes, afraid to answer. Stepping towards the room’s door, she looked through its porthole. Penetrating the night, Collen's scream lost itself in darkness… About this show. – Before each show, Colleen teases us with a small video, inviting us to join her socials for the new edition of Balearic Breakfast. Today was no exception, but when we saw the red light, the funny-shaped records, and Colleen mentioning "Halloween", we all knew we were in for a treat, and a Very good one... So we were excited, that's for sure! Little did we know the trip we were going to experience! From the start, the show had a vibe; a soul was there, lurking in the corner of our spirits. We all enjoyed Colleen's Halloween short story but something crossed my mind as I listened to it: 3. The turntable speeded up 3 times . Number 3 is the auspicious number ruled by Jupiter that holds deep spiritual meaning in life. People belonging to numbers 3, 12, 21, and 30 are associated with the planet Jupiter, and are sincere, understanding, and spiritual. They are positive thinkers with traits like loyalty and trustworthiness... There you go... This one is for you, dear Captain... The Balearic Family had fun during the whole show, carefully listening to our Captain telling us about Halloween's origins and meanings and dancing to the ghostly beats... The Wow effect. – Usually, I always talk here about music . Still, today , I can't stress enough how much the Balearic Breakfast family was Wowed by Adam's work on the visuals (some of us even suspected he'd taken something trippy, laughs!). What a fantastic revolution of strange forms, ghostly figures and shamanic colourful ensembles! We loved today's visuals ; thank you once again , Adam; we clearly saw that you had fun! We did, too! As far as the music was concerned, we really loved the musical unity Colleen proposed to us. Indeed, that was a very Balearic Halloween! Matt Raistrick shared his thoughts on the Mixcloud chat, saying: Very impressed this has stayed credible balearic Halloween and hasn't descended into an unruly kids Halloween disco"! As expected when you listen closely, a lot of the tracks had that underlying "tension" to them, even the ones which were more relaxed ( Rico Toto's "Fwa Epi Sajes" or Kenneth Bager & Findlay Brown's "Don't Give Up" are great examples of that)! More precisely, the Balearic Breakfast Family has been Wowed by Colleen's story and by the following songs: A Mountain of One's "Bones" , Skatt Brothers' "Walk the Night" and included, as often, Colleen's small mix consisting of these three wonderful tracks: Aural Exciters' "Spooks in Space"; Midnight Starr's "Freak-A-Zoid" and yours truly free four-legged spirit request, Peter Brown's "They Only Come Out At Night " ! If only you could have seen the visuals as we did, you'd surely have understood why we were all so ecstatic (comments included the following, not edited: " A bit Phantasia these ghosts", "Visuals are wild today!", "A bubbly Halloween", "Spooky visuals!!!!" ). I tried to take some snapshots but they're not the best; oh well, at least we'll have something to remember! If you're searching for more information about "Halloween"'s mask, head over here , the whole story is there for you to read. I would like to end this longer Wow section by waving a big hello to Bradley Circle from " Find Our Balearic Spirit ", whose request, Anthony Teasdale's Tango De La Boca, really hit a chord in me. I strongly encourage you to read the interviews I did with both Bradley and Anslow ; really great DJs with a lot to share...
