ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Balearic Breakfast is a "radio show without a radio station", as Colleen once said in an interview. And yet, it is one of the most important shows streamed live on Mixcloud. Every year, Colleen prepares special episodes that celebrate Women, Black History Month, or, as it is the case for this last one, Pride Month.

Right from the start, the members of the Family gathered around our Captain. We were all happy, in a good mood, ready to enjoy this 4:30 hours long musical journey: "My summer vacation starts right here, right now" (Aiko Kitagawa); "Beautiful sunny morning with beautiful soundtrack and an ice cold beer" (Graeme Cameron); "Late but locked in - looks like I missed an amazing first hour" (Sioban Murphy) were only a couple of the messages posted by the Fam on Colleen's mixcloud as she started the show.

With the constant pressure that the members of the LGBTQ+ community are facing, including hate, rejection, and other homophobic reactions, it seems the freedom of love is in danger, and we all need to stand against these unacceptable behaviours. I wrote these few lines on the chat: "We need more love, more freedom, we need to love who we want to love and celebrate the ones we need to celebrate without any kind of limitations..."

Musically speaking, today's show was eclectic, perfectly showcasing the raw talent of our beloved artists. Colleen's delicate musical soul shone throughout the almost 5-hour journey. Starting with a calm and Jazzy part (allowing the listener to picture an incredible vastness...), Colleen then drifts away into a pop section, leading us then to a disco party like no other (including songs by Change or even the great Patrick Cowley). Today's episode ends on an incredibly powerful note with Sounds of Blacknesse's 'The Pressure', one more that will forever stay in our hearts!

This morning’s Balearic Breakfast Pride Special is now up on my Mixcloud and is a 4 and a half hour celebration of the LGBTQ+ community’s creativity and musicianship.

Every June, I look forward to this show as I discover new artists and tunes (this year @electricfields_music and Linda Hillery were my new discoveries). Each Pride special has its share of joy and fun but also poignancy and reflection and this show is no different. In an era in which we are seeing trans rights being denied and gay rights in danger of being overturned, I feel these LGBTQ+ community celebrations are incredibly important and I personally send my support and solidarity. Its an honour to host this show and I wish all of the LGBTQ+ members of our Balearic Breakfast family a very happy Pride.
