  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 154 | The Balearic Balloon...

Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 154th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on November 07th 2023. About this show. – When Colleen posted the request line on her socials last Saturday, we felt a wind of liberty caressing our faces as she wrote: "Up up and away in my beautiful, my beautiful Balearic Breakfast balloon! What would you like to hear on the Balearic Breakfast live stream this Tuesday morning on my Mixcloud Live and Twitch TV? There is no theme this week - wild and free in the land of make-believe." We all knew a special show awaited us, and even more so when we checked each one's requests, laughs! With its beautiful, free, quite long, airy, open-minded and somewhat Jazzy-oriented tracks (you'll understand why in a moment), this 153rd is one that will allow your mind to create beautiful pictures of the Balearic Breakfast Family flying in the air, over beautiful landscapes... Get ready to jump into our Musical Balearic Balloon; we're taking you with us! Listen back to the 153rd episode of Balearic Breakfast: THE PLAYLIST Ancient Infinity Orchestra – Equanimity Alameda Duo – Laurel Undisputed Truth – Down by the River Mountaineer – Golden Chalk (Version Idjut) Sonia Whittingham – Sweet Sensation Leprechaun – There's No End to Our Love Freda Payne – Don’t Wanna Be Left Out Flair – Chasin’ the Rain (Heels & Souls) Onegram – Aeo (Slowly Dub Mix) Mike Anthony – Why Can’t We Live Together (Extended Version) Pellegrino & Zodyaco – Quimere (Selezione Esotiche) Antenna – Clockwork (Daniele Baldelli Remix) Psychemagik ft. Navid Izadi – Mink & Shoes (Greg Wilson Edit) TPO – Hiroshi’s Dub S’Express – Nothing to Lose (Subterranean Edit) Abel ft. Sabrina Chyld – I Just Can't Wait Trentemoller – Le Champagne Portishead – Roads THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Visually speaking, there are so many musical ways to travel, so many different mental places to go to and Colleen, thanks to the Balearic Breakfast Family's requests, showcases that perfectly in this show! We start by jumping into the balloon, slowly going up, reaching the right speed and viewing the first landscapes. These first tracks represent, perfectly, the feeling you have when you're in a balloon, flying overseas, over cities, deserts, or over whatever place you might dream of. It truly is a moment of wonder! Let's dive a little bit into the first part of the show. The beautiful opener, Ancient Infinity Orchestra – Equanimity [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , a 14-member jazz ensemble led by double-bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey, based in the bustling creative city of Leeds in the North of England), sets the tone of the show ; we're all about a balloon flying in the sky. I absolutely love the wide and visible soundstage and the realism of the instruments! Then comes another beautiful, light-driven, airy track, that helps us picture our dear Balearic Balloon going up in the sky, Alameda Duo – Laurel [ 2017 - Bandcamp ] , comprised of Jakub Ziołek and Mikołaj Zieliński, the Polish guitarists and vocalists add to this track some realistic effects, which totally makes you forget about what's around you even with open eyes! This song also shows how much Polish music-driven people tend to craft recordings of great quality (head over here for the Crushing Glow Vol. 2 compilation), followed closely, but still calmly by Undisputed Truth – Down by the River [ 1975 - Discogs ] . Of course, you all had the same thought as I did ; this sounds like Pink Floyd's "Breathe"! Fun fact: on the chat, theflyingcuthers shared with us that, on the Discogs page for that album, someone wrote, " You couldn't take enough drugs these days to make something this wild" (laughs!) - The song is a cover of Neil's young track of the same name published on his 1969 album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Keeping the free spirit of its predecessors, and with its unpredictable, very free-jazz approach and surprising musical structure, Mountaineer – Golden Chalk (Version Idjut) ) [ 2011 - Discogs ] , perfectly allows you to relax and helps your mind visualize the Balearic Balloon! Such a nice way of ending the first part of the show! Then, after that moment of ecstasy has passed, you really, and simply, enjoy the ride; the next tracks selected by Colleen purely picture that second time of the "Balloon travelling" trip! But these next 12 songs also greatly picture your own inner travels, the ones you make when closing your eyes and listening to the show! Well, don't close your eyes, just yet, here are some more information for your reading pleasure (laughs!). Starting with Sonia Whittingham – Sweet Sensation [ 1988 - Discogs ] , Colleen speeds up the Balearic Balloon a little bit; the rhythm is more pronounced right from the start, still keeping the large soundstage and the airy sound; we slide into the next step of the show with this wonderful track reissued in 2023 . L etting the previous track roll down till the end, the light yet solid Leprechaun – There's No End to Our Love [ 1982 - Discogs ] , shows how much Colleen respects the show's soul... She goes down on that huge musical route by allowing silence to become music as Freda Payne – Don’t Wanna Be Left Out [ 1974 - Discogs ] arrives. The first Wow effect of the show also brought to you on a beautiful, almost silent moment... That musical introduction blew us all away; this song truly represents what musical escapism is (head over here to watch an interview)! Flair – Chasin’ the Rain (Heels & Souls) [ 1988 - Discogs ] takes then the con. This beautifully sounding track by the German band Flair, Chasin' the Rain is reissued in 2023 is also a musical wonder! Appreciate how much this one also has that unpredictable musical structure!), Onegram – Aeo (Slowly Dub Mix) [ 2020 - Bandcamp ] : allowing us all, of course, to think about David Mancuso ( Aeo (Parts 1 & 2) - Brian Biggs )! Colleen dedicates Anthony – Why Can’t We Live Together (Extended Version) [ 1982 - Discogs ] to all of the people suffering because of wars in this sad world of ours, I feel like republishing here the origins of that song... "Timmy Thomas wrote the song after moving to Miami, Florida, and hearing Walter Cronkite on the radio reporting on the number of deaths in the Vietnam war. In a later interview, he commented: I said “WHAT?! You mean that many mothers’ children died today? In a war that we can’t come to the table and sit down and talk about this, without so many families losing their loved ones?” I said, “Why can’t we live together?” Bing! That light went off. And I started writing it then. “No more wars, we want peace in this world, and no matter what color, you’re still my brother.” And then after that, put it on this little tape, and went to WEBF, which was a local radio station. And they played local artists then… they played it, and the phones lit up. They said “Man, who is that?” And I did it as a one-man band! That was my foot playing bass, that was my left-hand playing guitar… Could never believe that as a one-man band, something like that would’ve been played that much. But I do believe that the world was ready to start changing a little bit. And that song made the change" ... Of course, the song was a Loft Classic (do you understand, now, why I told you that Colleen has a "Balearic" Background?). While Pellegrino & Zodyaco – Quimere (Selezione Esotiche) [ 2022 - Bandcamp ] was playing, the Balearic Breakfast family spent some time searching what "Quimere" meant (Chimère in French and Chimera in English). Actually, a chimera was a fearsome, fire-breathing monster with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a dragon's tail. She terrorized the people of Lycia until their king, Iobates, asked the hero Bellerophon to slay her. Nowadays, though, we rarely use this word with this meaning; we rather use it to describe something that's illusory, followed by Antenna – Clockwork (Daniele Baldelli Remix) [ 2022 - Discogs ] . another vividly visual and trippy song allowing you to picture our Balearic Balloon! This one was crafted by Daniele Baldelli and Davide & Alessandro Piatto from the cult Italian band N.O.I.A. and got beautifully mixed by our Captain with... Psychemagik ft. Navid Izadi – Mink & Shoes (Greg Wilson Edit) [ 2018 - Discogs ] . Not played in a while on Balearic Breakfast; this one took the whole Balearic Breakfast Family by storm and won the Second Wow Effect of the show! Both Psychemagik (a favourite of DJ_Emma) and Greg Wilson are artists you have to know if you love dance music! We all knew one of our favourite moments of the show had arrived, we were in full speed and our Captain took us on a beautiful mix, one for the records! TPO – Hiroshi’s Dub [ 1998 - Discogs ] is an energetic track that will be reissued soon [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] on a beautiful compilation curated by Alex from Tokyo. With its light structure, this song is, intellectually, quite close to some of Colleen's productions and fits perfectly in this show, slowly announcing its forthcoming end... (pay attention to the soundstage, which is quite wide!). It gets followed by S’Express – Nothing to Lose (Subterranean Edit) [ 1991 - Discogs ] . If you're into dance music, you must know that I lov e S'Express! The British dance music act from the late 1980s had one of the earliest commercial successes in the acid house genre (and my absolute favourite) with " Theme from S'Express" , which contained elements from Rose Royce's "Is It Love You're After". It was one of the earliest recordings to capitalize on the emergence of sampling culture. Sadly, each journey has an end; here it comes with Abel ft. Sabrina Chyld – I Just Can't Wait [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] . Did you just notice how much Colleen's mix here during these last 3 tracks is light and absolutely imperceptible? She is such a class act! This last song, closing the second part of the show, is taken from Steve Butle's project, Abel, and their latest album "Cosmic Law". The last part of the show (consisting of the 2 last tracks, Trentemoller's "Le Champagne" – with that bit of something from Kasso's " Walkman " – and Portishead's "Roads" ), at least to me, could represent the feeling you have after landing back on earth: a pure dose of happiness but also a slight sadness as you'd wish the trip would last forever! If this show can prove something, it's that it has, once again a vibe of its own, not similar to any previous show Colleen did before, even her latest "Balearic Brunch" on NTS (which you can listen to here ). So, all I can say is "come back later, because the fun has just begun!"... Events. – Colleen will take part in these forthcoming events: November 9th : Rough Trade Records ( an evening with David Holmes ); December 9th : Love Affair Presents: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy; On New Year's Eve: When pigs fly ( official website & tickets here ).

  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 155 | Free as a Seagull...

Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 155th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on November 14th 2023. About this show. –   A few days ago, when sharing the request line on her socials, Colleen was clearly in the mood for a good flight with a seagull! After meeting an eagle and also some dancing pigeons, there you go, here comes the Seagull! You might remember that we already met them in one of the first shows from the series (head over there). Yet, as always, nothing is the same here at Balearic Breakfast, and this 154th is once again here to prove it with several layers of interpretation available upon listening! So let's meet our new friend and see what we can learn by his side! Listen back to the 154th episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Jonny Nash – Dream it Right (Music from Memory 10) Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now (Live at Newport) Joni Mitchell – Impossible Dreamer It's A Beautiful Day – White Bird Snow Raven (ft Misha Mishenko) – Free Birds Waves – Summer Sunday (25 years of Aficionado) Seal – Fly Like an Eagle Tom Tom Club – Won't Give You Up (Random House Project Remake) Grand Tapestry – Seagulls Alisha Chinai & Vijay Benedict – Zindagi Meri Dance Dance D' influence – Good Lover (Touch Remix) Marcel – On the Beach David Kitt – Till The End (X-Press 2 Remix) Ministry – I Wanted to Tell Her Soft Rocks – Talking Jungle (Justin Vandervolgen Remix) Jose Gonzalez – Stay in the Shade (Pablo Fierro Edit) Blaze presents James Toney Project – Elevation David Holmes ft. Raven Violet – Hope is the Last Thing to Die THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE This 154th episode has to be one of the best examples of how and why this blog was born. When listening to the songs, their tonality, and their lyrics, I was able to divide this episode into three distinctive parts. So, without further ado, let's fly together! The first part of the show sets the tone; each one of the following songs helps us to feel what the Seagull is and who, in the end, we can become if we take the chance to adopt some of the feelings conveyed in these tracks! An immense, almost empty, sky, except for one bird flying somewhere. Is it lost? Is it searching for something? Taken from the new "10" compilation, Jonny Nash – Dream it Right [ 2023 - Music from Memory ] presents to the listener that never-ending travel to an unknown destination. Issued in 2021, the ethereal piece was used durin g the immersive audiovisual installation "Content Aware Fill", Jonny being joined back then by artist Nicole Martens to offer a memorable free and outdoor experience , the video being projected onto the iconic villa of the Chabot Museum. With Colleen dedicating the track to the memory of the late Music From Memory's founder, Jamie Til ler, we felt the need to share his picture here... The next three songs are quite interestingly put together, allowing us to think about what Freedom is and what we can do to achieve it. "Is it even reachable" is the question we may ask ourselves while listening to the poignant song by Joni Mitchell – Both Sides Now (Live at Newport) [ 2022 - Discogs ] ( I absolutely love this live version for many reasons, among which is Joni's laughter and, as Family member Rolo Mc Ginty said "Joni's older but still cutting in the hi end voice" ). Still, there is that urge, somewhere to do things, to hold on to people, to try trust again, try friendship again, never surrendering to the light sadness we have in ourselves, and that is, also, listen closely, present in this first part of the show. Hence, both Joni Mitchell – Impossible Dreamer [ 1985 - Discogs ] & It's A Beautiful Day – White Bird [ 1969 - Discogs ] , enhance these feelings of Belonging somewhere, someplace, with Someone by our side despite everything else (read White Bird 's story here ). When listening to these songs, a quote by the great Jacques Brel came back to my mind. He really is summing up these song's core message and it goes like this: Stupidity. Ah, stupidity is terrible. It's... It's the bad fairy of the world. It's the witch of the world. It's stupidity. There are no evil people, There are stupid people, And it's not their fault! And there are people who are afraid, That's their fault, People who are afraid and don't take responsibility for their fear. I think that's how it all starts. Well, that's... that's for a philosopher to determine, It's not up to me. I don't like stupid people. Because stupidity is laziness. No one will ever make me believe that... Stupidity is a guy who lives and says, "That's enough for me. That's enough for me, I'm living and I'm fine... that's enough for me". And he doesn't kick himself every morning and say, "That's not enough... you don't know enough, you don't see enough, you don't do enough!" It's laziness, I think, stupidity. A kind of fat around the heart, fat around the brain.         The next two songs, Snow Raven (ft Misha Mishenko) – Free Birds [2023 - Interview ] & Waves – Summer Sunday [ 2023 - Bandcamp – 1977 - Discogs ] , intrinsically take these thoughts to a "wider conscience", both musically and lyrically... Of course, you feel the urge to be free, yet, there's something more to than just embracing a spirit... You can clearly understand why when reading the description available on Bandcamp presenting the compilation Colleen is referring to: " French thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in their landmark work of philosophy A Thousand Plateaus created a vast systematic meditation on connectivity. When applied to creativity, such an approach can help detail and categorise all possible variables and account for how great things emerge, stabilise, then disappear. Deleuze and Guattari talked of lines of flight - new trajectories sometimes establishing temporary creative plateaus or assemblages which can be productive or destructive but are ultimately unstable and constantly subject to change and mutation. The trick, they said, is to achieve a balance between the poles which mark the limits of stability and change while strata and sedimentary layers form, and to be fleet of foot; reactive. And unsentimentally so. Survival isn’t guaranteed. " Can you now see, and hear (listen to the sound effects and the instruments ;-)), how much all of the songs of this first part of the show share a close DNA? Being free is a dream, of course, but, with great rewards comes great responsibilities, and you must have what it takes to experience your dreams... One of the first is discipline: you can't enjoy freedom without it... Freedom needs dedication... I'll end by quoting a nice analysis about "Both Sides Now" which, to me, encapsulates the feeling I felt when listening back to the show; read carefully: To me, both sides now isn't so much a coming of age song. If it were, it would mean that the author's point of view evolved from one earlier naive state to a more enlightened state through experience. In other words, it would mean that the protagonist used to see clouds & love as beautiful, and after subsequent experiences saw them in a different & more realistic light. While the coming of age/changing perspective thing is the subject of the verses; the chorus goes beyond that by adding that although she has seen things for what they really are, she continues to choose illusion over reality. I think both sides now is a song about illusion versus reality from the point of view of a dreamer. Even when experience teaches the true nature of something, the dreamer can continue to live with their illusions about life and love. The dreamer seems doomed to repeat the same mistakes by choosing to sugar coat the true nature of life and love with their own romantic illusionment. Even this has a duality: you can look at it as being hopeful or unrealistic. The show's second part is shorter, at least to me; it contains only four songs that share one common answer to an essential question: how can the "flying effect" appear in our lives? One of the first answers we have here is that freedom is a thing of the mind! So we need to use our Spirit and Fly away. Freedom is a thing from the mind and the Soul. Taken from Space Jam's Movie Soundtrack, Seal – Fly Like an Eagle [ 1996 - Discogs ] is an adaptation of the 1976 song by the Steve Miller Band. Another way for freedom to show itself in our lives is, of course, through Love! Tom Tom Club – Won't Give You Up (Random House Project Remake) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] is a perfect example of that! The original song came out in 2012 on Tom Toms Club's sixth "Downtown Rockers" album, with Chris Frantz saying: "We’ve always been on the upbeat side, and I think these songs are good for parties and dancing. I think it’s safe to say they will lift people’s spirits." This naturally leads us to the next two absolutely huge tracks; winning the first Wow effect of this 154th edition of Balearic Breakfast; Grand Tapestry – Seagulls [ 2020 - Bandcam p - Website ] & Alisha Chinai & Vijay Benedict – Zindagi Meri Dance Dance [ 1987 - Discogs ] , allowing Colleen to celebrate the Hindu festival of lights, symbolising the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance", Diwali! If you feel like discovering more about our Friend Pritpal Ajimal (also known as Sway of the Verses, member of the Melomaniacs ), head over here ! Pritpal was also featured in this year's first Balearic Breakfast show . Of course, you've understood it quite easily here, the "Flying effect" always grabs us whenever we liste n to Music! For your information, the song "Zindagi Meri Dance Dance" was left out of Babbar Subhash's film " Dance Dance" although it featured on the vinyl album release in 1987. Re-discovered, and enjoying a second lease of life in director Ashim Ahluwalia's 2017 gangster film " Daddy" , the song was a huge success, becoming one of the top tracks of the year! The Last part of the show is an actual invitation to Fly as we shall see! Colleen begins the second hour of Balearic Breakfast with two tracks, sharing an identical tonality : D' influence – Good Lover (Touch Remix) [ 1992 - Discogs ] & Marcel – On the Beach [ 1999 - Discogs ] ! Then, she takes us on a proper trip, using her incredible mixing skills allowing us to forget, that, somewhere, a clock is ticking the time away, thus winning the second Wow effect of the show! The first small mix is comprised of David Kitt – Till The End (X-Press 2 Remix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] / Ministry – I Wanted to Tell Her [ 1983 - Discogs ] / Soft Rocks – Talking Jungle (Justin Vandervolgen Remix) [ 2012 - Bandcamp ] . Check out a nice interview of David Kitt on hotpress.com where he talks about his musical journey and his brand-new album. I must add that Soft Rock's Talking Jungle is one of my all-time favourite tracks! Also, the song " I Wanted to Tell Her " fits the show like a glove in the sense that it deals with the need of the narrator to feel connected to Someone; there is a need to escape and to find new beginnings... " The lyrics depict a sense of longing and the urgency to reach out to someone who can truly understand and empathize. The upbeat rhythm and energetic instrumentation contrast with the underlying theme of longing, adding a complexity to the song. This juxtaposition captures the inner turmoil and the dichotomy between outward appearances and inner emotional states that many individuals experience ." The second small mix contains tracks by Jose Gonzalez – Stay in the Shade (Pablo Fierro Edit) [ 2017 - SoundCloud ] / Blaze presents James Toney Project – Elevation [ 2000 - Bandcamp ] ! That's some proper flying effect to me! The show-ender, David Holmes (ft. Raven Violet) – Hope is the Last Thing to Die [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] is taken from Holme's last album, " Bird on a Galloping Horse ", and the translation of the French Lyrics might interest you just a Tiny Bit... All, in all, when you think about it, and strangely enough I talked about it a few days ago with Ana, this show is brilliant because it offers layers of interpretation on an important theme... "Freedom"... Attention, attention sisters and brothers This missive contains scenes of human fragility We're all alone in this togetherness We're all alone in this togetherness We're all alone in this togetherness Dissolve these corrupt governments of the world that prostitute our souls and future NOW NOW Because only love can save us COVID showed your true nature Privileged of self-qualified gangsters without any shame Shame? Shame? Shame on you It's on your back It's on your back It's on your back Just made life hell You know... Hell or Heaven Events. – Colleen will take part in these forthcoming events: November 18th: 17 Little Portland - A Night with Alex From Tokyo ; December 9th : Love Affair Presents: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy; On New Year's  Eve: When pigs fly ( official website & tickets here ). • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 156 | Hallucinogenic realities

Colleen ’Cosmo’ Murphy broadcast the 156th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on November 21st 2023. Introduction. – Did it ever happen to you that, for one reason or another, you weren't able to figure out what was happening in your life? Like, bits of information were missing? Does it happen you're discovering something about someone or a situation you weren't ready to see and that, somehow, you can't handle? Well, search no further; this post is made for you! We all experience these "weird" moments, sometimes fueled by a lack of communication, misunderstandings or simply by our own exhaustion (laughs!). In any case, if this happens to you, one of the things is to talk it over or, in a more strange way, keep in mind that maybe, I said maybe , you're not really living the reality you think you are living (read that again, laughs!). This thought was brought to me first by NIN when I listened to their song " Right Where It Belongs " but also by my own thoughts about the way I was perceiving things (of course, helped in these lost thoughts by the great Serge Gainsbourg, who said, answering a journalist asking why he dressed his houses' walls in black: " because they're white in psychiatric hospitals "...). So when something strange happens to you, take a deep breath and keep in mind that, very often, there are... two sides to the story ! Listen back to the 155th episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Andre 3000 – Ninety-Three Til Infinity and Beyonce Strawberry Guy – Mrs Magic Steve Hillage – Palm Trees Love Guitar Mayssa Karaa – White Rabbit Rodriguez – Climb Up on My Music Serge Gainsbourg – Daisy Temple Grace Jones – My Jamaican Guy (Dub) Korallreven – Honey Mine (Lissv ik Remix) Underworld – M.E. The Orb – Earth (Gaia) Blue Boy – Remember Me YSE Saint Laur'Ant – Warm Wind Brewing Kleeer – Tonight Cantoma – Way to the Sun (Neche Espanola Mix) Curtis Mayfield – Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like to Be Loved) Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads – Mushrooms (Salt City Orchestra Out There Mix) Shapeshifters – Tell MeIts Not Over (Cosmodelica Remix) Fleetwood Mac – Big Love (Piano Dub) Odyssey – Hang Together (Pete Blaker Edit) About this show. – Last Saturday, after a long walk in the forest, posting the request line a little bit later than usual (this is just to say that we're all in the starting blocks, laughs!), Colleen greeted us with this message, allowing us to make hallucinogenic requests...: It’s mycelium madness in Epping Forest! The stars aligned and Colleen gifted us with a tremendously nice, high in colours and visual effects all around, balearically Mushroomly show (laughs)! Find out more just now in the Detailed Playlist! THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Starting the show with Andre 3000 – Ninety-Three Til Infinity and Beyonce [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , Colleen immediately sets the tone of this almost psychedelic show. His new album " New Blue Sun " – spanning over 3 LPs, nothing less – has been praised by a lot of websites and magazines , including the French " Les Inrocks ". The four following tracks include Ariana's (Happy Birthday Lady!) request Strawberry Guy – Mrs Magic [ 2019 - Discogs ] , a relaxed and grand-sounding piece – the album it is taken from, "Taking my time", is getting a repress – about the struggles of trying to break free of one's inner turmoil and uncertainty (see how much your blogger is connected to these shows now...?) . It is beautifully blended with Steve Hillage – Palm Trees Love Guitar [ 1978 - Discogs ] , which keeps the weirdness alive with these long-maintained notes coming from that very wave-sounding guitar – Produced and engineered by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason , Green features science fiction themes and explores electronic music – easily sliding into Mayssa Karaa – White Rabbit [ 2013 - Discogs ] . Originally recorded by Jefferson Airplane, whose singer and composer the great Grace Slick said , "In the 60s, the drugs were not ones like heroin and alcohol that you take to blot out a terrible life, but psychedelics: marijuana, LSD and shroomies. Psychedelic drugs showed you that there are alternative realities. You open up to things that are unusual and different, and, in realizing that there are alternative ways of looking at things, you become more accepting of things around you" ) . The last song, Rodriguez – Climb Up on My Music [ 1971 - Discogs ] – take the time to scroll through this website ; you'll learn a lot about this great artist – makes you realise the powerful side of our beloved show. Each one of the Balearic Breakfast Family members has its own interpretation of what "hallucinogenic music" can sound like, and still, great unity comes out of it! I just love that; in fact, we all can't get enough of that! After this nice warmup, Colleen speeds up the strange effect trip, by playing tracks showcasing how much music can take you into another dimension. Starting with Serge Gainsbourg – Daisy Temple [ 1979 - Discogs ] , the artist – whose mansion can now be visited alongside a beautiful museum – showcases here his ability to make rhymes sing , creating a song without a real meaning about a girl liking quite anything that ends with the sound oo (laughs!). I chose Daisy Temple for its "musical dub style", not found to that extent on other songs from the album. We're then drawn into a strange musical world with an absolute classic, keeping the dub style absolutely alive: Grace Jones – My Jamaican Guy (Dub) [ 1983 - Discogs ] . When listening to that song, I can hear a lot of similarities with another track by Serge Gainsbourg taken from his 1981 album "Mauvaises nouvelles des étoiles" (Bad News from the Stars), created after he finished working on his book, Evgeny Solokov . Keeping the Jamaican vibe, Colleens ends the trip with Korallreven – Honey Mine (Lissv ik Remix) [ 2010 - Discogs ] . The next phase of the show takes us to a more "airy" side of what truly might be an "acid trip" (it is being said that the French singer Johnny Hallyday once tried hallucinogenic mushrooms while recording his 2011 album " Jamais seul "... Though we don't know if this is true, vocally, the results were trippy for sure!). Starting with Underworld – M.E. [ 1994 - Discogs ] – the album has been remastered in 2014 – our Musical Captain keeps the hallucinogenic pace by playing The Orb – Earth (Gaia) [ 1991 - Discogs ] read a full review of the album here , dropping just after that the absolute classic that is Blue Boy – Remember Me [ 1997 - Discogs ] – check the Mushroom Jazz compilations here , thus creating the first Wow effect of this 155th edition of Balearic Breakfast!! (Colleen's rhythmic capabilities just Shine at this very moment...). Oh, how we all love the musical unity she creates for us week after week; we just can't get enough of that! The chat was bouncing today, I can tell you that! Keeping the rhythm, and the mental freedom that goes with it, Colleen takes us further down the creepy lost road where everything gets wilder and wilder (laughs!), YSE Saint Laur'Ant – Warm Wind Brewing [ 2012 - Discogs ] dancing (and sampling Henri Mancini's " Lujon ") in rhythm with Kleeer – Tonight [ 1979 - Discogs ] . The next trippy trip speeds up things with Cantoma – Way to the Sun (Neche Espanola Mix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] & Curtis Mayfield – Tell Me, Tell Me (How Ya Like to Be Loved) [ 1979 - Discogs ] . But our Captain didn't want to slow down the rhythm at all! So she went straight ahead by crafting a Mushroom Mix for us, and what mix that one was ( here you go, take a second Wow Effect , laughs! ): Marshall Jefferson vs Noosa Heads – Mushrooms (Salt City Orchestra Out There Mix) [ 1996 - Discogs ] / Shapeshifters – Tell MeIts Not Over (Cosmodelica Remix) [ NYR ] & Fleetwood Mac – Big Love (Piano Dub) [ 1987-Discogs ] (another song dealing with uncertainties and lost minds, the video clip for the song making direct references to The Tw ilight Zone, with a window floating in space and being filled with then-innovative compositing and special effects )! Colleen knows how to take you higher, doesn't she?! The way she mixes these three songs together is pure Mushroom Highness to me! We were all seeing mushrooms here, mushrooms there, mushrooms everywhere, laughs!, and Adam had so much fun with the visuals today! One of them saw the video stream split the turntable's image into a sort of sun or something; it was so nicely done, and oh, how trippy! But I didn't have a chance to take a picture of that one, because I was too concentrated on sharing on the chat how much I loved what I just saw, Laughs! The show's last song, the absolutely wonderful Odyssey – Hang Together (Pete Blaker Edit) [2023 - NYR ] really acted like a musical Coda on all of us, leaving us with lost minds in some parallel worlds where all we could see were Mushrooms. • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 157 | Meeting Mark Barrott

Colleen' Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 157th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on December 05th 2023. About this show. – Balearic Breakfast is the place to be if you're curious about Music and feel like discovering artists and DJs you have never heard about before. In this 156th episode, just after Colleen took the con at the London Loft Party during a 7-hour long set (yes, you can have your Wow moment, laughs!) on Sunday, December 03rd, she introduced a lot of us to someone whom she's been following for years and whose inspiration could not be dismissed: Mark Barrott . The English DJ, record producer and label owner is a talented musician, and his moving interview with Colleen allowed us all to reconnect with our inner humanity. A Beautiful episode, with one heavenly ending... I have long been a fan of the record label @internationalfeelibiza which was founded by Mark Barrott about 15 years ago and surprisingly many of the records are actually him under a different moniker: Young Gentlemen’s Adventure Society, Rocha, Boys from Patagonia and more. He also released an album called Johatsu as Mark Barrott earlier this year. He and I had a chat about International Feel, Johatsu and the new album he is currently recording and he also put together an exclusive mix for today’s Balearic Breakfast. Thank you Mark! Colleen, instgr, 05/12/2023 Listen back to the 156th episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Jennifer Vanilla – Pastoral (Love Injection's Celestial Mix) Cocteau Twins – A Kissed Out Red Floatboat Kuniyuki, Soichi Terada & Sauce81 – Let Us In Ace – How Long (Charles Vaughan's Loving Mirrorball Edit) ----- Mark Barrott Interview & Mix ----- Mark Barrott – Bush Society Bepu N'Gali – I Travel To You Talamanca System – Balanzat Mark Barrott – Kyoto Mark Barrott – Shinrin-yoko Mark Barrott – Icarus Mark Barrott – One Friday in September Mark Barrott – Kamikakushi Miles Davis – In a Silent Way Japan – Cantonese Boy Talk Talk – I Believe In You Kate Bush – Hello Earth THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE After her 7-hour-long musical trip at the London Loft, Colleen prepared a beautiful and moving show for us. The first 4 tracks set the tone of what would be a memorable episode on all accounts. Today's show opener is Jennifer Vanilla – Pastoral (Love Injection's Celestial Mix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , taken from the expanded edition of her "Castle in the Sky" album, which was originally issued on August, 5th 2022 (more about her here ). Love Injection records, Paul Raffaele and Barbie Bertisch shared on their socials a few days ago the news about this very remix they worked on, saying, "Our remix of Jennifer Vanilla is out today via Sinderlyn, included in Castle In The Sky (Expanded Edition). Our thanks go to the duo and label for the opportunity and to Toribio for his keyboard contributions, as well as the legendary Dave Darlington for mixing it. We set out to strip down and rebuild our version of an ethereal world, Jennifer Pastoral as the track is named, resulting in two versions: Earthly and Celestial. More news on the Celestial Mix soon, but the Earthly Mix releases today. Turn it up and let loose." A big-sounding piece with a wonderful soundstage, this remix for sure is a Balearic Treat, followed by Cocteau Twins – A Kissed Out Red Floatboat [ 1988 - Discogs ] , a song without real lyrics as Colleen explained it to us on the chat: Liz Frazier doesn't sing in any known language, most of the time. Instead, she vocalizes some sort of secret language of her own ( read this interview to discover more about Liz's musical and personal journey & head over to Classic Album Sundays to find out more about their album "Blue Bell Knoll" ). The two aerial musical moments are followed by two other more uplifting tracks, the first one being Kuniyuki, Soichi Terada & Sauce81 – Let Us In [ 2022 - Bookmat ] . It is indeed a classic that closes the first part of today's edition, as Ace – How Long (Charles Vaughan's Loving Mirrorball Edit) [ 2023 - Soundcloud ] is a well-known song of all music lovers alike. Taken from Ace's first 1974 studio album ' Five-A-Side ', this song is not your typical love-affair tune, laughs! Ace's bass player Terry Comer was working with other bands - he played briefly with The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver - and he didn't tell his bandmates, who felt cheated when they found out. Paul Carrack, Ace's lead singer, then wrote the song, one of his own first which remained a big hit. " How Long? " was released on the Anchor label in 1974, backed by "Sniffin' About" and produced by John Anthony for Neptune Productions. It has been recorded many times since. Terry Comer, the bass player a rival band were trying to "nick," returned in time to play on the original recording. Sadly, Ace disbanded in 1977. "How Long" has been a solid musical companion over the years ; often, I would listen to the track on an endless repeat loop! I reached out to Charles, wanting to know how he worked on this gem, and he gladly shared his memories with me: " Basically, I discovered the track on social media and had it on repeat for a few days, but was driving myself insane that the original was just a few minutes. I wanted to make an edit similar to Todd Terje’s edit of "I Want Your Love" – simple, drawing all the best elements out, euphoric yet pulled back. I grabbed the stems from an AI software I use and did it all in 2-3 hours – just getting everything extended and rebalanced the way I wanted, plus add some extra layers to make it more spacey! Love the result – wanted to make something that would evoke a real loving energy on the dancefloor, a final embrace under a disco light!" Charles Vaughan , 05/12/2023 Mark's selections left the Balearic Breakfast family wowed. Both his interview, his thoughts, the way he changed over the years, his humility, the way he works with music today, trying to seize its pure moment and not overdoing things, and of course, the music he composes, left us all humbled, absolutely humbled and several members of the Balearic Breakfast Family shared on the chat how much the interview, and the show, moved them. Starting with "Bush Society" [ 2015 - Bandcamp ] , a track that came " from the desire to make timeless, exotic music, dripping in-depth, melody and atmosphere... Music that can be cherished in the present and discovered 20 years into the future with equal surprise and joy. Music for imagination. Music for people that know there's something more " and offering a visual universe like no other, blending music with sounds of nature, Mark then takes us to Africa with Bepu N'Gali – I Travel To You [ 2012 - Bandcamp ] . The story behind this track is awesome, and I encourage you to read its description on Bandcamp! The " righteous summer jam " is then followed by the very Balearic tune that is Talamanca System – Balanzat [ 2015 - Bandcamp ] . Mark then takes us on a small journey through his new album, Jōhatsu . Following Mark's last few words about the failure of Globalization, and encouraging us, people, to get connected on a smaller and collective level, Colleen's musical choices for the end of today's show fit perfectly, allowing us all to slowly drift away into our own days... Starting with Miles Davis – In a Silent Way [ 1969 - Discogs ] – an album that would be recorded during one three-hour single session with Miles Davis encouraging his musicians to capture the moment – Colleen then played Japan – Cantonese Boy [ 1981 - Discogs ] – Japan's Keyboardist Richard Barbieri recalling that recording the album " was a very laborious process, but creatively satisfying(...) it was the first album where we actually produced something (...) completely original ." – easing things down to Talk Talk – I Believe In You [ 1988 - Discogs ] – whose haunting atmosphere led Mark Hollis in dealing with his Brother's heroin addiction – and, lastly, beautifully ending the trip with Kate Bush – Hello Earth [ 1985 - Discogs ], which, according to Kate Bush is " a lullaby for the Earth. And it was the idea of turning the whole thing upside down and looking at it from completely above. You know, that image of if you were lying in water at night and you were looking up at the sky all the time, I wonder if you wouldn't get the sense of as the stars were reflected in the water, you know, a sense of like, you could be looking up at water that's reflecting the stars from the sky that you're in. And the idea of them looking down at the earth and seeing these storms forming over America and moving around the globe, and they have this like huge fantasticly overseeing view of everything, everything is in total perspective. And way, way down there somewhere there's this little dot in the ocean that is them." I can't help but think that Colleen, in these last tunes, wanted to musically expand Mark Barrott's message... All in all, what a way to end the show! Events. – Colleen will take part in these forthcoming events: December 09th: Mastersound's 15 years celebration (find out more about this great brand here ); December 09th: Love Affair Presents: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy. • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 158 | The Calling...

Colleen' Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 158th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on December 12th 2023. Introduction. – Tell me how you engage with Music, tell me how you listen to Sound, and I’ll tell you who you are. Music is a universe in itself, a universe you can only discover if you allow yourself to disconnect from anything else, the first thing being your conscience. You must listen without thinking about it. It’s like entering a trance... As these words start dying peacefully, and while sitting in a comfy chair or lying on your bed, you hear a sound coming from the depths, gently surrounding you, hugging you, and letting you disappear totally. Drawn into a world you never thought existed, your inner journey takes you deeper and deeper into the realm of your real existence. Music. Notes, musical ones; Words, intellectual ones, a flow, the never-ending river, the one created by artists, musicians, writers, creators, and... DJs... I'm just like you, you know, allowing myself to drift far away into worlds I never visited before. Aren't we all Little Princes deep down inside? Aren't we all searching for our own truths? And who can we rely upon? Who can guide us if not Artists, musicians, writers... DJs... You see me coming, don't you? Yes, I know you do... Trying to figure out how to celebrate this blog's first anniversary (on the 14th of December, it will be one year old...), I gave myself some time and listened to the great French Pianist Samson François. While reading Diapason's article, I was moved. When asked why he didn't respect the rhythm of the Music, Samson answered, " If I'm being irregular," he explains, "it's not at all out of caprice, or because of mood swings or even health issues; it's only because every time, every concert is an adventure." In another interview, he went on, "For me, each concert is a story. So each one is conceived, placed "in a specific light, a kind of symbol". I think this is essential. [...] For instance, in the second concert, I chose a very instinctive program, which I liked. It was a "nocturnal" concert: two Etudes by Debussy, the second of which [Pour les degrés chromatiques] is really like the gliding of a bat's wings. [...] Then there was Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7, which took on a dramatic, anguished allure that it doesn't have if you play it at the end of the program , where it's a brilliant piece; finally, four Nocturnes by Chopin, and I started with the first one, which sounds like bells in the distance. Well, it's amazing the reactions I got after this concert. People were downright distressed" . This is when I stopped reading for a while, lost in my thoughts: it is something to feel things, to do things as I do here on the Balearic Breakfast blog. Yet, it is something else to find in Samson's approach towards Music the same approach I try to have towards Colleen's body of work, and also Colleen's own approach towards the show... As Samson, I feel where Colleen tries to lead us; I think a lot of the members of the Balearic Breakfast Familly understand her choices. It seems obvious that each show is a Program having its own Soul, which she tries to bring upfront... Not so strangely enough, because I feel Life had a Master plan, I talked about this point, remotely of course, having it in my mind, indirectly, with Marcia Carr and DJ_Emma just a few days ago, telling them how much they, in their own way, helped in sharing Music's absolute essence, be it in their own creations or in the way they mixed songs during their sets, just like other friends from the Balearic Breakfast Familly do... A DJ is like a painter, like a writer, like a pianist ( sidenote: Is, well, at least he should be, because we know not all DJs have that profound approach to Music, but yes, indeed, a DJ should transmit Music's Soul without touching it, without modifying it... ). A DJ should play his Soul and let it meet and uphold Music in the purest way possible. I found myself whole in Samson's words and his Philosophy, and you know that I already shared with you some of these thoughts before, yet I didn't know Samson was so close to me... "I do not lie : I live my Imagination" Samson François About this show. – Just before playing her last gigs for this year, Colleen put up the request line on her socials, asking us what we would like to share on the next Balearic Breakfast show... Well... It seems obvious I was not the only one hearing The Calling ... Did I say that, sometimes, Life had a Master plan? Listen back to the 157th edition of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Takashi Kokubo & Andrea Esperti – Whales of Sirius Julie Byrne – These Days Robert Wyatt – Maryan Cassandra Jenkins – Hard Drive Carolyn Franklin – I Want To Be With You Nev Cottee – The Sun Also Rises (Wonderfulsound Mix) Marti Caine – Love is Running Through Me Alessi Brothers – Seabird J.J. A friendly hand appearing as you walk towards a sky that doesn't want to share all of its secrets immediately with you, a voice calling you from somewhere, out in the void... This is perfectly represented in the show's opening track, Takashi Kokubo & Andrea Esperti – Whales of Sirius [ 2023-Bandcamp ] , which absolutely embodies this post's title. Reading an interview that Takashi gave a few years ago, I could not help but share this specific part of it: "I think music is a thing that adds flavor to the air in a space. What I often try to do with my sound environment design is add a seasoning of air that makes you breathe more slowly than usual. You can change the rhythm of space. If you can create an exciting rhythm, you can also create a rhythm that makes you feel relaxed and breathe slowly. You can control the physiological movements of people who gather in the space, such as pulse and breathing, to some extent. You can control concentration and relaxation. Branding is possible. Sound can create the identity of the space. With sound, you can also partition space, create defined areas within areas." This sentiment of being drawn into something is also present in the following track, Julie Byrne – These Days [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , the artist not being a stranger in sharing her love for the great outdoors and open roads . Our musical discovery takes on a very pictural presentation with Robert Wyatt – Maryan [ 1997 - Discogs ] , which makes use of sounds enhancing the musical experience, enlarged by a surprisingly unorthodox musical structure and a Beautiful lyrical story . As I said to DJ_Emma, I love it when musicians and artists take chances while creating music... It's about the magic, the surprises, the Voyage... Coming back to the show, Colleen knows what she is doing and when to do it; she lets silence take its place just before the next track Cassandra Jenkins – Hard Drive [ 2021 - Bandcamp ] starts, putting it on a nice pedestal that it deserves when you take conscience of its lyrics ... Do you start seeing why this post is entitled "The Caling"? ... As I said before, it is in these blissful musical moments that you feel our collective power. It can't get better than what you're just hearing here, really. The second part of the show starts with Carolyn Franklin – I Want To Be With You [ 1973 - Discogs ] , and this is where Samson's analysis about the place of a piece in a recital takes its whole meaning. Of course, the track has an objective drive that leads the listener, but it is here enhanced by the first tracks played during the show. Always keep in mind this: the best way to listen to Balearic Breakfast is to consider each episode as a musical entity of its own. The following song, Nev Cottee – The Sun Also Rises (Wonderfulsound Mix) [ 2013-Bandcamp ] , though having a slower start, shares with the previous one the same tense musical hope, the same friendly hand leading you in your journey. Oh how I love Colleen's Rhythmic precision as Marti Caine – Love is Running Through Me [ 1981 - Discogs ] starts! There is another lesson to be learned here: reaching someone's soul when mixing tracks is not always done by keeping a steady rhythm. It is also, and very often, done by allowing you to drop it a little bit while being cautious as to when to start the next track! Colleen keeps on taking us into her Musical Journey with the next number, Alessi Brothers – Seabird [ 1976 - Discogs ] , followed by the incredible J.J. Cale – Durango (Balearic Jukebox Edit) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , reproducing a well known rhythmic pattern here and winning the first Wow Effect of the show ! The Calling finds its absolute reality in this very part of the show, it is present both in the lyrics, in the atmosphere and, of course, in the music! Keeping Jim's Spirit alive and well, Colleen chose to play Asha Puthli – Right Down Here (Psychemagik Remix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , which, both in its structure, in its rhythm and in its spacy imagery, embodies this post's title! I feel the next few tracks, because of their differences with the previous ones, belong in this third part of the show, showcasing how much cleverly blending musical styles might enhance the mental visuals one is able to create while listening to Balearic Breakfast! By mixing Young Gun Silver Fox – Moonshine [ 2022 - Bandcamp ] with Achab – White Lights in Summer [ 1978 - Discogs ] , beautifully followed by Je' Couleur – Space Dancer [ 2014 - Discogs ] , Colleen really gave us all goosebumps! With its dreamy synths, Otherlover – Someone To Rely On [ 2017 - Bandcamp ] is another song reaching out to you and ending in a crazy white noise, followed by Change – Hold Tight (Long Version) [ 1981 - Discogs ] , which really is an invitation to dance you can't refuse! We're reaching higher grounds now as Colleen takes us to the Pet Shop Boys – Being Boring [ 2001 - Discogs ] , keeping the rhythm absolutely steady; this is just crazy, right there! My personal, and second, Wow effect! Talking about musical unity, Colleen keeps the fire burning, and the musical calling stone immaculate with Spirit – Spirit (Zaf & Phil Asher Edit) [ 2019 - Discogs ] and Tim Hutton – Colours (Freeform Five Mix) [ 2000 - Discogs ] , beautifully blended together! The music calls you to follow her never-ending dance with Jacob Gurevitsch – El Terreno [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] ; can you hear her while the last track plays on? BOOKS RECOMMENDATIONS Click on the pictures to find out more... Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution Airing tomorrow night (Saturday) on BBC Two , the following Saturday will see the conclusion of the three-part series. From the sweaty dance floors of private parties and basement bars in 70’s New York to the glittering peak of the global charts, this is the story of how disco conquered the world - its origins, its triumphs, its fall, its comeback and its legacy. I haven’t yet seen the series, but from what I can see the series gives voice to communities that were at the heart but haven’t always enjoyed fair representation - LGBT, people of colour and women. I look forward to hearing their stories and am honoured to have been included, as well. Its a bit nerve-wracking having to wait to see the final product but from everything I have witnessed so far, it looks like this series was in good hands. Disco: Soundtrack of a revolution will be archived on BBC iPlayer so you have the chance to watch it over the holidays, and if you’re based in the USA, it will air on PBS during Pride Month in June, when the Stonewall Uprising is commemorated. • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 159 | 18 thoughts for snow...

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 159th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on December 19th 2023. About this show. – With Christmas being just around the corner, Colleen invited us to share songs to what would be the last show of the year. We all gathered around her Christmas tree, our hearts filled with songs and emotions... Embarking on what will promise to be a proper and memorable tour in the early days of 2024 (Colleen will be touring Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong, see below ), our dear Captain did not let us down as she has worked with members of the Breakfast Family who will take the con musically while Colleen will be travelling. With these exciting times ahead of us and with the warm show Colleen prepared for us, both joyous and reflective, I thought it would be nice to have 18 thoughts for snow... Listen back to the 159th edition of Balearic Breakfast: You can now listen to the last live Balearic Breakfast show of 2023 on my Mixcloud where its archived along with all of the other Balearic Breakfast shows. I’ve told you that I’m heading off down under, so you may be wondering what is going to happen to the show? Well, although I shepherd the show and pull it together into something that hopefully resonates, it’s the BB family who choose most of the music and I love the musical conversation. With that in mind, I asked several of our consistent contributors to contribute a one hour mix and I will stream those mixes by hosting Balearic Breakfast on the road. Starting on Tuesday, the 9th January, I’ll stream Balearic Breakfast at the same time -Tuesdays 10 to 12 GMT and hopefully at the same place - on both Mixcloud Live and Twitch TV. We have mixes from BB contributors and I’ve been listening to the mixes they sent over and its so inspirational as they all have their own vibe and musical bent. I’ll still be on the chat groups too so we can all get together as we listen to the mixes so yes, BB will take a couple of Tuesdays off and then the live streams recommence on the 9th January. Colleen, Instgr., 19/12/2023 PLAYLIST Cat Power – Hey Mr. Tambourine Man Rachael Lavelle – Let Me Unlock Your Full Potential Yu Su – I Want An Earth Gaudi & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Bethe Bethe Kese Kese Baalti – Kirpa Monyaka – Go Deh Yaka (Go to the Top) Paul Johnson – Better Than This (Dego & Kaidi 2000 Black Mix) Amp Fiddler – More Than Roundtree – Get On Up (Moplen Remix) DC La Rue – Cathedrals Spirit of Love – The Power of Your Love Inner City – Good Life (Magic Juan Mix) Amp Fiddler – Hope (YSE Mix) Mateo & Matos – New York Style Parbleu – Elios Azoto – San Salvador Kate Bush ft Stephen Fry – 50 Words for Snow Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Don't you know it's not just the Eskimo. Let me hear your 18 thoughts for snow... Sadness. – Christmas is a bittersweet holiday for me, too many people lost, I feel lonely, hence the request of Mr. Tambourine ... I wish it would snow right now, you know Ana? Only Snow has the power to soothe this lingering pain we all have deep down inside as the end of the year shows its winterish moods (these are not tears in my eyes right now...), and I wish I could be closer to you to give you a hug, but I know someone who can do it right away, dear Lioncub, please... Sadness is here in this episode of Balearic Breakfast, as, with the end of the year, we think about the loved ones we lost (friends, members of our families or of our communities) and these few lines are dedicated to all of you who, in a silent tear, hope for sunnier tomorrows ... Today's show opener, Cat Power  – Hey Mr. Tambourine Man [ 2023 - Discogs ] , was recorded live in 2022 at the Royal Albert Hall by the American singer and songwriter; her show recreating Bob Dylan’s legendary 1966 show at the Royal Albert Hall in full. Her calm rendition gives the original song an aura one may not have found in Bob Dylan's version, giving the lyrics a beautiful setting. Yet, it must be said that Mr. Tambourine Man, made famous by The Byrds , who took it to #1 in both the US and UK, is not your happy song by any means; the lyrics display a man playing a tambourine, followed by a lonely man... The lyrics are ones of sadness and willingness to escape... Self-Empowerment. – Taken from her new album Big Dreams, Rachael Lavelle – Let Me Unlock Your Full Potential [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , and as she explained it on her website, "The title is taken from an ad that found me as I searched for the answers to getting “unstuck”. At the time I wished for nothing more than someone to come along and show me the way, but this song reminds me of the need to trust oneself. It is a song about getting out of your own way, taking responsibility, setting the wheels in motion and unlocking your own potential". Faith. – This next song, Yu Su – I Want An Earth [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] is powerful because of how it is able to share its musical faith into our own reality. It is a plea, but it holds in it Faith also, faith for a better future. It is the kind of song which really takes me back to the tracks composed by Davide Lovato or George Koutalieris, music holding visual capabilities... Voyage. – Keeping the trippy soul alive, Colleen then plays Gaudi & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan – Bethe Bethe Kese Kese [ 2007 - Discogs ] . If a track in this 158th edition should embody Voyage, I believe this one fits the bill pretty well! For those of you who want to know, the lyrics seem to be, " Oh what unthinkable pain my heart feels, You took someone else's name, And my eyes, Filled up, Oh what unthinkable pain my heart feels" The song was taken from Gaudi & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's 2007 album Dub Qawwali but can also be found on the Budha Bar X compilation . Mercy. – The next song, Baalti – Kirpa [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] seems to deal with faith as, while searching on the web, I found out that the word Kirpa meant "Mercy". We're touching higher and unknown grounds here! Find out more about Baalti by following their Instagram ! Unity. – With its punchy and positive lyrics, this song made me think about us, about the musical Family we really are. Monyaka – Go Deh Yaka (Go to the Top) [ 1984 - Discogs ] is a song about friendship " We want you to know / That we won't ever let go / Rockers! / And you, you must understand / That we are here to lend a helping hand" This song, the album opener, was a n° 14 hit in the UK, with then-current bass player Paul 'Computer Paul' Henton. It hit n° 48 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles. On a personal level, I absolutely love the first part of this 158th edition of Balearic Breakfast as it encapsulates a lot of the "sad" and "reflective" times we experience, holding in its hands some hope for the future. The musical unity is great, and these first six songs really help you to reach other grounds! Love. – For the next 6 songs, Colleen spreads a lot of joy among the members of the Balearic Breakfast Family. Starting with Paul Johnson – Better Than This (Dego & Kaidi 2000 Black Mix) [ 2015 - Bandcamp ] , it is obvious that Colleen won't let sad times set in for too long. Life is a trip; we must embark on it and hold our heads up high; love is the answer... Dream. – Paying tribute to the late Amp Fiddler throughout the show, Colleen plays a very dreamy track, Amp Fiddler – More Than [2002 - Discogs] , from his 2002 EP, Basementality. Head over to the Classic Album Sundays website to read the interview Colleen did with Amp. This song can also be found on the 2021 album and embodies how we all feel when listening to Balearic Breakfast: a sentiment of joy, blended with ecstasy and that infinite sense of freedom! I think I just gave you an explanation about the howz and whyz of today's post title, laughs! Happiness. – Since we're having a laugh, let's go down the musical road with Roundtree – Get On Up (Moplen Remix) [ 2021 - Discogs ] . This song is one of our favourites! We love its groove; it makes us Dance! Issued in 1978, just when Disco (from the word Discothèque – a French word, by the way, which meant, in 1928, a place where records were collected, but also, in the '60s, a place where people would dance together – if you didn't know!) started its short but tremendously successful journey, this track embodies everything we love about this musical style: the rhythmic section, the groove, the orchestra, the tightness of it all and the simple lyrics! Should you want to know more about the BBC2 Series that started a few days ago, just follow this link . Disco. – This next song is a beautiful example of what True Disco Sound was like back in the day: a long musical trip! With its strange and somewhat sad lyrics, DC La Rue – Cathedrals [ 1976 - Discogs ] still has that Balearic Touch that makes your body move to the beat. Taken from the 1976 album of the same name, including the very lonely and funky piece "I don't want to lose you" with its whooping 14:14 minutes of windy wanderings, Cathedrals started ... At the Loft ! "It was three or four in the morning at the Loft, and I was standing on the sidelines with Steve D’Acquisto [the DJ and all-around disco insider who later went on to work with Arthur Russell]. David Mancuso didn’t mix songs together, and at one point, in the silence between the records, people were freaking out in anticipation of the next track – and when David put on the next record the crowd exploded. Steve goes, “Ahh, discos are the cathedrals of now!” I thought, “Ooh, that’s a good concept for a song.” Soul. – Balearic Breakfast is the place where anything, musically speaking, laughs!, can happen. This song, Spirit of Love – The Power of Your Love [ 1978 - Discogs ], absolutely embodies the show's power, freedom and encompassing spirit. You have it all there: the disco/funky sound, the choir and the wonderful voices, not to mention the Balearic touch! The song has been reissued in 2016 . Youth. – Inner City – Good Life (Magic Juan Mix) [ 1988 - Discogs ] just brought us back to our younger years; a lot of the members of the Balearic Breakfast Family wish they were young again! Should you want to find out more about the original cut, head over here , the story is Great! Hope. – Keeping the rhythm steady throughout her speeches, Colleen embarks here on another musical trip with 4 songs that blew the Balearic Breakfast's ship apart, laughs! Amp Fiddler – Hope (YSE Mix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] is taken from the 2006 track issued as an EP. "I am maintaining my faith as a creative person. I figure the creator must have a purpose for me, so I have to stay focused and keep my faith that everything is going to be alright. I’m always trying to be positive about the future of what is possible because I’ve got so much more to learn." RIP dear Amp... Groove. – While we were enjoying Amp's track, we were blown away by Colleen's mix. I mean, listen to that... At that point, the Balearic Breakfast Family was bouncing, dancing, laughing, you name us how you want, I think we just totally lost it, laughs! As I said on the chat, the Wow effect was on ! My dear Friend Ana joined forces and said to Colleen how much we loved the mini mixes she creates for the show! Mateo & Matos – New York Style [ 1996 - Discogs ] just brought that absolute groove to our dancefloor! The track can be also found on Joey Negro's 2015 compilation , 90's House & Garage Vol. 1. Cosmos. – For the second time in the show we here have a track blending several musical styles in one musical trip. After the disco/gospel trip, we here have a cosmo-balearidisco tune, laughs! That one must have been Colleen's favourite on today's edition, for sure! The song, with French lyrics, is about someone who was unable to find love on earth and leaving it for another dimension; the lyrics are fairly explicit : " Without love / nothing remains but a cold box / I'm sure of it / soon the sun will warm my soul / I see it / She's on the horizon / It's been years / I dream of this merger / Collision / I'm going for it / Su-per-no-va / My heart's already melting". Parbleu were already featured in Balearic Breakfast with "Dance cette Zik", in this new track, Parbleu – Elios [ 2023 - Discogs ] , the duo composed by Andres Balbucea and Andrea De Fazio went to meet the Greek mythology, nothing less, and with how much musical aplomb did they do that! Balearic. – The last track of that wonderful Balearic/disco mix is Azoto – San Salvador [ 1979 - Discogs ] , which has been reissued in 2022 ! Blizzard. – Whenever I listen to Kate Bush ft Stephen Fry – 50 Words for Snow [ 2011 - Discogs ] , I always picture a heavy Blizzard and a presence, somewhere... A man, a woman, who knows? Maybe some of us trying to figure out life's meanings? “Years ago I think I must have heard this idea that there were 50 words for snow [in the Inuit language]… And I just thought it was such a great idea to have so many words about one thing. It is a myth – although… it may hold true in a different language – but it was just a play on the idea, that if they had that many words for snow, did we? If you start actually thinking about snow in all of its forms, you can imagine that there are an awful lot of words about it. Just in our immediate language, we have words like ‘hail’, ‘slush’, ‘sleet’, ‘settling’… So this was a way to try and take it into a more imaginative world.” Peace. – With the show ending with an absolute classic, Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song [ 1962 - Discogs ] ( written in 1945 by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé, this stereo version of the song was recorded by Nat in 1961 and found on his 1962 album pictured here) , we can't help but feel the bittersweet happiness lingering in our souls. What's this life about? It's all about doing our best while we're here, so let's enjoy ourselves while we can; tomorrow might never come... Whatever you do, please, remember, just be Balearic... Colleen will be featured in these coming events (click on the pictures to get the tickets): December 31: When Pigs Fly, Melbourne AUS; January 6: Runner Up, Melbourne AUS; January 12 & 13: Sydney AUS TBA; January 21: Mellow Magic Sunday, Adelaide AUS; January 28: Yot Club, Ragian NZ; February 3rd: Flamingo Pier; March 8th: The Disco Express.

  • Balearic Breakfast| Episode 160 | Family Gathering 1 (Rob Calcutt & Virginia Tzioti)

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 160th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on January 16th 2024. About this show. – This very episode has been a long time coming! But it Happened! As Colleen embarked on what one can call "a proper tour" (she is in Australia), she had to find a way to keep the Balearic Breakfast ship afloat! To do so, she secretly asked several members of our Balearic Breakfast family if they could prepare one-hour mixes she would later stream as she would not be able to present the show away from home. And, as expected, we answered Loudly, with a lot of happiness: YES OF COURSE! Here is what Colleen shared on her socials before heading to the other side of the planet: "I've told you that I’m heading off down under, so you may be wondering what is going to happen to the show? Well, although I shepherd the show and pull it together into something that hopefully resonates, it’s the BB family who choose most of the music and I love the musical conversation. With that in mind, I asked several of our consistent contributors to contribute a one hour mix and I will stream those mixes by hosting Balearic Breakfast on the road. Starting on Tuesday, the 9th January, I’ll stream Balearic Breakfast at the same time -Tuesdays 10 to 12 GMT and hopefully at the same place - on both Mixcloud Live and Twitch TV. We have mixes from Kieran McCann, Lee Zee, DJ Emma, Rob Calcutt, Virginia Tzioti, Matt Raistrick, Susan Chan and Bert Francois. I’ve been listening to the mixes they sent over and its so inspirational as they all have their own vibe and musical bent. I’ll still be on the chat groups too so we can all get together as we listen to the mixes so yes, BB will take a couple of Tuesdays off and then the live streams recommence on the 9th January." Well, things didn't go as originally planned as, on the 9th of January, a technical issue prevented Colleen from streaming the show. It brought a lot of sadness to the Family, but eventually, we stayed Balearic and said to ourselves: "Good times are coming; let's keep the fire burning!". And that's what we all did! Finally, the awaited moment arrived, and we all had a memorable show, listening to 2 great mixes crafted by our friends Rob Calcutt and Virginia Tzioti . I even took the time to ask our friends some questions and published these two nice interviews on the blog. As I always like to say, We are the Biggest Musical Family alive on earth. Laughs! Nota: Rob has put together a guided, 45-minute journey for Balearic Breakfast listeners, containing all kinds of breathwork and ambient sounds. You can get this at www.urbanhealer.co.uk/balearicbreakfast Listen to the 160th episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Rob Calcutt 'Urban Healer' Mix Urban Healer – Day Night and Dawn in the Amazon Fred – Morning Meow Urban Healer – Gong bath The BBC Sound EFX Library – Ambience, Rural Britain, Sea Cliffs and Rocky Shores Mark Knopfler  – The Rocks and the Water Amaro Freitas  – Rasif Kiefer  – Cute Footshooter ft Brother Portrait  – Dawn (Buffalo Stance) Idjut Boys – One for Kenny (Extended LP version) Zenit  – Waitin' 낯선사람들 – 왜 늘 Madonna  – Secret Garden Phavia Kujichagulia  – Overdose Christy Essien  – Take life Easy Mari Kaneko 金子 マリ – Get to paradise Jolley & Swain  – Soul Street (12" extended version) Millie Jackson – Leftovers Opal – Ain't No Way (Special Club mix) Bonnie Pointer  – Free Me from my Freedom Virginia Tzioti Mix Ami Shavit  – Alpha 1 Vangelis  – Tales of the Future Tomislav Simovic – Waste of Emotional Energy (Repeated Viewing Remix) Von Spar – Scotch & Chablis 40 Thieves – The Sandpiper (Pyschemagik Remix) Wink – Higher State of Consciousness (Album Version) Miyako Koda  – Butter The Grid  – Crystal Clear (Clear Like an Unmuddied Lake Remix by The Orb) Samo – A Certain Ratio The Daou  – Surrender Yourself (Album Version) Gala Drop  – Overcoat Heat The Phenomenal Handclap Band – You'll Disappear THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Two mixes, two vibrations, one same tribute to a show and to a person whose humanity brings people together around Music. I couldn't have written that sentence in another way! And you'll very soon discover how much it is all true! Let's bring a global analysis of the two mixes first, it will allow us to dive into them in greater detail afterwards. Rob's mix presents a great unity, both rhythmically and Musically, leading us in an introspective journey. On the other hand, Virginia's mix is more elevated, it has more variations and has a "dreamy", "flying effect" approach. Both mixes are perfect to listen to if, like me, you've been tired of your week and want to escape this world musically. And, as far as the tribute goes, it is obvious, when listening to the mixes, to hear songs that are like winks towards our Musical Captain, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy. It is one thing to share your microphone with other DJs and other artists, but it is something totally different to lend your show to people who admire what you do and to let them propose mixes of their own. Yes, Colleen embodies what it means to be "Balearic", bringing people together around music; well, to me, that's a pretty "Family affair" thing! Don't you think the same? (laughs!) So, now, let's dive into each mix and let's discover these two absolutely nice, by the way, vibrations that are Rob and Virginia! Starting his mix with a nice presentation, the listener is immediately struck by Rob's ability to propose a "mental movie" to him. I can fully feel that as in my own "edited mixes", I use the same philosophy to structure the story I want to tell! Whenever you add sounds to a mix of your own, whenever you add clearly thought sound effects to songs that are blended together, you expand the possibilities of interpretation; you allow your listener to let himself totally go away. It is what I call a "Musical movie", and it is not often used, I think, by DJs or radio broadcasters. So dear Rob, well done here! The actual Musical adventure starts with Mark Knopfler – The Rocks and the Water [ 1983 - Discogs ] . Very quickly, from the second track on Amaro Freitas – Rasif [ 2018 - Bandcamp ] , the listener has a feeling: Rob's beautifully blended tracks do transmit an active willingness to soothe the listener, this feeling being enhanced by the warmth of the sound with somewhat shadowed highs that, nonetheless, show great detail. On a more concrete level, it's interesting to note that these first two tracks do intellectually refer to "homecomings": Rasif refers to a colloquial spelling of Amaro's hometown while "Local Hero" is Mark's first soundtrack solo project out of the Dire Straits, released in 1983... Coming next, the beautifully mixed-in Kiefer – Cute [ 2019 - Bandcamp ] presents a somewhat shinier sonic approach (my feeling being confirmed by this review ), still keeping a somewhat enclosed vibe. The relaxation experience is kept intact with the following musical experience, that is Footshooter ft Brother Portrait – Dawn (Buffalo Stance) [ 2017 - Bandcamp ] . We do have the impression of being sucked into a huge space while we feel the sound has, for the first time in the show, a much "snappier" reality. These tracks really showcase the Wow effect of this first mix, which, to me, is the "musical integration". Rob's mixing is precise, as we do not notice the end of one track and the beginning of another one! This is exactly what happens when the incredible Idjut Boys – One for Kenny (Extended LP Version) [ 2012 - Discogs ] starts. In a review of the Idjut Boy's fourth studio effort, one can read this: " The first single, "One for Kenny", is the album's most danceable track, candy disco that moves at the same pace as a comforting lava lamp. Halfway through it eases (there are no sharp movements on Cellar Door) into a gorgeous, jazzy piano line. It feels like someone draped a warm blanket over the track ". This mix sure offers comfort! The next song, Zenit – Waitin' [ 1986 - Discogs ] , also beautifully mixed to the previous one, keeps on taking us through that unknown journey, Rob clearly showing us here he has no meaning of slowing the trip's tempo down. For your information, Zenit's album, Straight Ahead, from which Waitin' is taken, was recently reissued in 2018 . What's great is that you can hear, in each song of Rob's mix, different sonic textures, and different depths, yet you're never distracted from the actual trip because the mixing skills are impeccable, and the general volume of the mix is absolutely perfect, allowing the listener to concentrate on the Music. Without a doubt, it is one of the most homogeneous mixes I ever heard in my life. Furthermore, Waitin' has a similar sound signature to THE BIG BLUE soundtrack, composed by the great Eric Serra, lending us to feel like we've reached our inner sea... There's a Style here; a musical soul is definitely living in Rob's body! When I said in the beginning that there was a willingness to pay respects both to the show and to Colleen, I was referring to what is happening right now in the mix. We changed tempos as the second part of Rob's mix starts with a beautiful South Korean PIece, 낯선사람들 – 왜 늘 [ 1993 - Discogs ] . Issued on King Record - Hana Music, the album is hard to score. Rob kindly shared with me the song's meaning: "it's a song of longing, and the translation is something along the lines of "Why are we always strangers?" ". Thanks Rob! Keeping the rhythm steady, Rob takes us to another great song, which is Madonna – Secret Garden [ 1992 - Discogs ] . As you might expect now, at least you should not be surprised, "Secret Garden" is Madonna's most personal song. Get ready, if you're under 18 please don't read, laughs! "The song is described as Erotica 's most personal song. In addition, "Secret Garden" is dedicated to the singer's vagina, "the secret place where she could enjoy herself."" Furthermore, the song features a jazz-house beat which samples the drum break from "Soul Pride" by James Brown with the BPM of 117. Interestingly enough, one of Madonna's fans shared his thoughts about the song, writing, " In French, "jardin secret" is an expression referring to someone's unspoken and intimate life and actions, the kind of things that you do mostly on your own without telling anyone else because it's not their damn business, the thoughts that you hardly share with your partner for a lot of reasons, and most importantly stuff that makes you feel good about yourself. Fontainebleau at the end of the song indicates that her secret garden is not only her bush but also that special place in one's life experience that you can only learn about when you're dating someone French. So maybe someone got the pun." That's something to feel Balearic Breakfast's soul breathing slightly differently in the hands of its supporters. To experience that is so heartwarming, really! To feel Colleen's support is really something mindblowing; we are the biggest musical family on earth people, and we Feel the love as the next song enters our dancefloor, Christy Essien – Take Life Easy [ 1979 - Discogs ] . We experienced a lot of Beautiful mixes by Colleen, but that one, with the following track Mari Kaneko 金子 マリ – Get to Paradise [ 1983 - Discogs ] , has such a Balearic Feeling to it, I think it will be hard to top! As we can hear it, Rob's cat is in heaven; I know he is cuz' as a Lioncub, I talked to him, and he said to me, "Whenever Rob mixes, I fly elsewhere!" There you go! We're effectively flying on Jolley & Swain – Soul Street (12" extended version) [ 1985 - Discogs ] , which does have a "Music and Lights" feeling all over it! We're three tracks away from Rob's mix end as the great, and already featured in the show previously with " If Loving You Is Wrong " from her previous album "Caught up" ISSUED IN 1974, Millie Jackson – Leftovers [ 1975 - Discogs ] takes us to a slower, groovier but somewhat darker place; Rob's mixing is, of course, still perfect here! The next song, Opal – Ain't No Way (Special Club mix) [ 1983 - Discogs ], is not played in its entirety and when you hear why, you'll be jumping on your feet from exaltation; so well done, Rob! We end the beautifully crafted mix with Bonnie Pointer – Free Me from my Freedom [ 1978 - Discogs ] . As I said at the beginning of this detailed playlist, Virginia's mix is more on the "open" and "outer voyage" side whereas Rob's mix was, to me, in its first part, more introspective. This trip towards an unknown yet foreign land is very well documented in Virgini'as Tribute to Vangelis, through the two tracks she plays that are Ami Shavit – Alpha 1 [ 1977 - Discogs ] and Vangelis – Tales of the Future [ 1994 - Discogs ] , which has already been featured in the show. Vangelis shared, in an interview , how he worked when composing; I feel it is very interesting to remember that as it is true for artists: "They happen. When I do something like that I try not to think. It just comes naturally. And why naturally? Because what I see creates an emotion and this emotion comes out immediately," he says with a click of his fingers. "It may be the right one or it may be the wrong one. Usually the first one is the right one, and then the second and third are much more intellectual in approach which is second best. That's why I work in a very quick way. From this set-up," he says embracing the keyboards that surround him, "I can trigger anything I want in a split second. I like that immediacy and playability". Virginia's approach to this mix is more upfront in the beginning; the way she mixes the following track Tomislav Simovic – Waste of Emotional Energy (Repeated Viewing Remix) [ 2021 - Discogs ] shows it perfectly, and we understand why she decided to put it here as it shares with the previous track the "airiness", enhancing the listener's flying sensation! As Ana Maria said to me, " I like Virginia's mix because there are a lot of cinematic moments "! There you go! Keeping the flying feeling absolutely alive, Virginia takes us to Von Spar – Scotch & Chablis [ 2010 - Discogs ] ! Strangely enough, we were speaking about wine with Colleen in the first part of the show, and she shared with us that she loved French white wine! Virginia's mix kept on opening itself, like a flower, and the next song, 40 Thieves – The Sandpiper (Pyschemagik Remix) [ 2014 - Discogs ] , is great evidence of that. Taking risks in changing rhythm is always a stressful moment for whoever tries to do it in a live set! Virginia does take that risk with a nice success here as Wink – Higher State of Consciousness (Album Version) [ 1995 - Discogs ] takes us to a higher musical ground offering wider visuals. We can't help but think about David Mancuso here as this track is absolutely close to the Loft Classic that is the Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds"! When this track ends, we clearly hear Virginia's adventurous side as Miyako Koda – Butter [ 1998 - Discogs ] enters the scene, with its slower rhythm. Estranged by this change in rhythm, we quickly let ourselves dive deeply into this intoxicating musical phenomenon. The next track, The Grid – Crystal Clear (Clear Like an Unmuddied Lake Remix by The Orb) [ 1993 - Discogs ] , rides on perfect time and makes us think of some of Ace of Base's productions from the 90s. Nice musical unity here with the following and very funky, track (find more about it here ) Samo – A Certain Ratio [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] ! As Virginia's mix is reaching to its end, we strongly feel her Balearic Soul coming through The Daou – Surrender Yourself (Album Version) [ 1992 - Discogs ] . I love the soundstage of that one so much, and there is an interesting interview right here . As Gala Drop – Overcoat Heat [ 2010 - Discogs ] drops, we clearly see this was Virginia's "I'm flying" mix. Virginia ends her mix with The Phenomenal Handclap Band – You'll Disappear [ 2009 - Discogs ] . Absolutely Balearically Approved Mix, Virginia!

  • Balearic Breakfast| Episode 161 | Family Gathering 2 (Lee Zee & Kieran McCann)

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 161st episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on January 23rd 2024. About this show. –   For this second edition of our "Family Gathering" series, a feature that Colleen will keep for future occasions by the way (that's great news!), she welcomed two key figures of our Family: our dear Lee Zee, whose deeply reflective mix inspired me creatively as you will see in, what I wanted to be, a real written tribute; and the Great and Kind Kieran McCann here proposing a mix which will take you to views you never saw before (and we shall see together precisely why)! Colleen shared these words on her socials: "As I’m now in New Zealand, once again, the guest mixes from our worldwide BB family continue. First up is my dear friend Lee Zee who is the designer of the Balearic Breakfast logo and all of those lovely ‘request line’ stencils that use photos of my travels. The last song of his mix is especially poignant as it is dedicated to his late mother who also happened to enjoy the KLF. She was a brilliant woman. His mix is deep and beautiful. It’s followed by a mix from @kieranjmccann of the @cooriedoonparty in Glasgow. His globetrotting mix will have you up and out of your seats in no time and shazam-ing like there is no tomorrow. Thanks to all who joined in the live chat during the Mixcloud live stream. It’s a grounding experience to be with all of you tuning in and chatting from different time zones and corners of the globe. You mean the world to me. Enjoy the show and thanks for listening." Dedicated to Lee... Dreams do never come true. Dreams do never come true. It’s a perpetual illusion, this world of ours we live in. A perpetual illusion we strive to keep alive and well because, amidst the loneliness, amidst the disillusioned love affairs and the untruthful friends, amidst the useless rules and the fatiguing orders given by those who do never experience their stupidity, amidst death lurking in the corner of our eye, we do all, effectively, have nothing left. So we strive with all of our broken souls to create, to recreate, something coming from a somewhat distant past where all of the reality of our actual dreams was a dream we were not aware of. Time passed, and we didn’t see life’s sail unfurling before our eyes, filled with empty words and lost promises, still thinking we had kept Something from that not-totally forgotten era... Yet, you held nothing, blinded child of the dying sun. You were a mere dream, a passing, a light ghost, and you shall stay in your ethereal and oh-so-long-lost amnesia . Voices, voices here, voices there, where am I? Who am I? Do I even exist? And these shores, are they real… Lee’s voice lost itself as he tried to call someone, something, somewhere, there… In the distance, he couldn’t distinguish anything, and the lonely fog kept waving around his feet. What’s there left to do? It seems I am no one, absolutely no one, since you left… Keep marching Lee... Keep on marching... Step after step, the fog kept rolling in and out of this undisclosed space, where promises seemed to blossom slowly like small red flowers in the spring's wakening wind… Step after step, you will forget about my dream, dear child. And, by doing so, you will discover the true meaning of life. Just like yourself, I was a dream passing by. Just like yourself, I was an illusion. One you needed, one you reached out to, finding there meanings and explanations, one you cherished and loved, but nothing more than just an illusion. And, in our unknown Balearic World, that is how it is all meant to be. You will find me again, Lee… I know you will… Keep on marching, dear Sun of mine… Voices here… Oh so close to me… But all I can see is your absence... Lee kept on marching in the lost ethereal space, a crystal tear vanishing in the awakening wind, there, somewhere, as a path started showing its waving ways in the now slowly, in the o so slowly disappearing fog. An actual path? How?! So lost, being offered a path? The never-ending source of philosophical elevation embarked Lee on the lost reality in its ever-renewing dreams, soothing his turbulences with steady and somewhat affirmed rhythms. Renew yourself, you’re nothing, and being nothing is the key, be everything but something tangible, that’s lost story, that’s a thing from your past now. Your only possibilities are in the never-more, and remember, just be Balearic, like the never-ending wave, like the high-flying bird, forever disconnect, disconnect, disconnect yourself from your inner tribulations, detach yourself from the Mortal coil they said was your only destiny, be open in your forthcoming conversations, for nothing here will be real. Go, go, go my child, awake in my sunny embrace and smile at all that's left here for you. Take a trip down to nowhere, Find Solace in the Kaleidoscope of your new Ecstasy and, at last, dear Sun of mine, embrace your only and true eternity... THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Certain songs of broken love take heavenly aspects, sometimes. This Mortal Coil – Song to the Siren [ 1984 - Discogs ] is one of them, undoubtedly. The song, originally composed by Tim Buckley, whose lyrics were taken from a poem by Larry Beckett, was issued on Tim's sixth studio album, Starsailor in 1970 and had quite a long story , both in its creating process as well as in its own musical reality afterwards . Leading us on a path of sorrow, Lee keeps the aerial aspect of his mix to another level with RY X – Berlin [ 2016 - Discogs ] . This song , through its sadness, still elevates the listener thanks to the musicality of the vocal line, which contrasts with the melody of the guitar, which is, to me, on the lower register. There's something very contemplative here, but sadness is not overwhelming, though it is heavy, for sure. We can feel Lee's delicacy as he lets the song die peacefully before starting the following ones; this mix is a flow, a march, a silent march. As Gigi Masin – Clouds [ 2016 - Discogs ] starts ( this track has been sampled many times ), we get closer to the marching aspect of Lee's mix; it is a journey through the unknown, confirmed by the following track, Cocteau Twins – Alice [ 1996 - Discogs ], which perfectly fits in rhythmically speaking. Released in 1982 as part of Cocteau Twin's' album “Garlands,” the track showcases Elizabeth Fraser's beautiful vocals, the song sharing with the rest of the tracks an ethereal element , leading us to picture clouds or fog in an unknown space... Though we feel lost somewhere, it is strange because we do not feel darkness; a sad peace surrounds us; this feeling is beautifully confirmed by the stunning track Izue Asazaki – Yoisura Bushi (Kuniyuki Remix) [ 2014 - Discogs ] , clearly indicating that this mix is a call ( "Yoisura Bushi" is a traditional Amami Island song of prayers for the safety of sailors ). Telling a story through a mix is one of the most hard things to achieve. You must know your tracks and their lyrics and keep the narrative clear. Normally, you should be able to write your story down on paper once you complete the playlist; at least, that's how I always worked on my own mixes. When we heard the following track, Mental Remedy – Omamiuda (Prayer for Japan) [ 2012 - Discogs ] , we all were in awe because we knew the track from Colleen's Balearic Breakfast Vol. 2 compilation, and, on a personal level, I felt this was a structuring point of Lee's story. This moment Wowed the Balearic Breakfast Family. From a lost world, from sadness, from grief, a path was born; a way out, somewhere, showed its indirect ways. Cleverly done, Lee , and with the right rhythmical touch, too. Being in Colleen's musical embrace gives us Joy, a tremendous amount of joy. Because we share the music but also the Show's soul. Lee, of course, did exactly what had to be done at the dawn of the second part of his mix by steadily speeding things up with the wonderful track that is Endgames – Ecstasy (Centurion Mix) [ 1983 - Discogs ] . The voyage is still taking place; it is just lighter now, and the following track, 52nd Street – Tell Me (How It Feels) (Dub) [ 1985 - Discogs ] , while keeping the rhythm steady, does not kill the ethereal element that was present in the first part of the mix. We have a great intellectual unity here, it seems obvious. Even the great Sade – Make Some Room [ 1994 - Discogs ] , with a more closed approach to the sound, keeps an openness into the void that can't be denied. Found on the B-side of their 1988 single "Nothing Can Come Between Us", " Make Some Room ", "a dreamy ambient techno tune with 909 rhythms, a rubbery 303 bassline and some chopped-up vocals" , shows Sade's voice less to the upfront than usual, "the track offering a sneak peek at the more electronic and downtempo sounds she would explore on her next LP, Love Deluxe" . While Malcolm McLaren – Call A Wave (Breakdown Mix) [ 1989 - Discogs ] slightly slows down the rhythm, we clearly see that the march keeps going on. With his great mixing skills, Lee is able to keep, slowly and in an almost perfect rhythm, the flow to the absolute greatness that is Tangerine Dream – Love on a Real Train (Live) [ 2015 - Amazon ] . Featured in the movie "Risky Business" (the movie soundtrack also includes the great "Old Time Rock'n'roll by Bob Seger), this trippy musical scene seems to find influences in Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians and remains, to this day, their most important production. Lee's last mix is pure bliss here, just right here, perfection. Listen to how the last track, The KLF – Last Train to Trancentral (Pure Trance) [ 1990 - Discogs ] , arrives on Time... Beautifully done, Lee... Following such an "inhabited" mix is not easy, but it seems that Kieran's musical trip perfectly marched into Lee's introspective work, actually because of its absolute "openness"! Logically, Kieran starts his set with the somewhat worried Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek – Hastane Önü [ 2021 - Discogs ] as it beautifully sets the stage and the Foreign Musicality this mix will propose throughout its hour lengthy sonic reality... It is not every day that you hear Turkish sounds taking you so far away from your homeland! This incredible musical piece is followed by a complete change of territory (we're closer to Tunis now) and rhythms (a light touch of Jamaican reggae!), with the beautiful Neyssatou – War [ 2019 - Bandcamp ] ! This beautiful piece is taken from the great " Pay It All Back Volume 7 " compilation which proposes 18 tracks stitched together with a number of special pirate radio-style segueways, creating a unique journey through the modern world of On-U Sound! Did you notice the dynamics of these songs? I think I already told you that Balearic Breakfast was all about the dynamics, didn't I? Talking about that, Kieran keeps the groove absolutely on by playing another groove , Horace Andy – Get Down [ 1985 - Discogs ] . It seems obvious, as the next number, Manu Dibango – Goro City [ 1980 - Discogs ] , enters our dancefloor, that Kieran, on that mix, was not rhythmically obsessed (at least in this first part, hint!). He went all the way towards an eclectic mix, showcasing beautifully recorded songs that must sound very good on a nice big sound system, laughs! For those of you who would like to know more about this particular song, there is a great French page on musiqxxl.fr . Gone Clear, the first of two reggae albums by the legendary Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango, was recorded in Kingston with Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar (who will also work with Serge Gainsbourg a few years later), and a brass section featuring the Brecker brothers! Sly & Robbie know how to do things... I also had the Brecker Brothers on horns... It's a good album, isn't it! In fact, I recorded two of them [Gone Clear released in 1979 and Ambassador released in 1981]. There's Gwen Guthrie and Jocelyn Brown on backing vocals, singers who've made huge hits... When you listen to the record, you hear it's singing... There's a special sound to it. I was happy to do it. I did stay in Jamaica for a month. It was a very good time. The mixing took place in London. Manu Dibango Keeping the rhythm steady for the next number with Don Cherry – I Walk [ 1985 - Discogs ] , one thing is sure: Kieran's selections sound huge and precise, with a beautiful depth to them. Interestingly enough, Don Cherry's studio album Home Boy, Sister Out from which I walk is taken was only issued in France, his international issue taking place some 40 years later on Wewantsounds! Once again, I can only recommend you have a Google translation of this great page ; it's a fascinating story! Sometimes, the best mixes are the simplest ones, and Kieran just proves it right now with the still very Balearic Antoinette Konan – M'ackô [ 1986 - Discogs ] , reissued in 2019 , followed by the joyous Nana Tuffour – Sikyi Medley [ 2018 - Discogs ] , which has been reissued in 2018 . What's happening here in the mix just Wowed the Family! Take the time to listen carefully; you should simply lose your mind when realising how beautiful this passage of Kieran's mix is as St Germain – How Dare You [ 2015 - Discogs ] enters our musical cells (this particular beauty containing a sample of " Nightmare Blues " written, composed and performed by Robert Burnside)! Clearly and slowly, Kieran takes us down to another Balearic side with the following number: Esa – A Muto [ 1986 - Discogs ] , nicely mixed in, by the way! ESA's first album, "A MUTO", was released in Cameroon in 1986. It marked a turning point in the Makossa practised in the southwest of the country. For the record, ESA (pronounced ESSA, a term which, among the SAWA people of south-west Cameroon, means "evocative magic" or "contact with the beyond") is an African music concept created by Georges DAYAS WONJAMOUNA and embodied by the exceptional Stephan DAYAS . I mean, come on, Listen to the realism of the sound; I'm just feeling ecstatic right now (oh, by the way, we're in Cameroon right now if you were curious)! Kieran keeps the Balearic Vibes alive and well with the incredible Club Ice – Manhassett (Larry Heard Space Mix) [ 1992 - Discogs ] , ending his set with the very "Credits like" song, Natalie Cole – Annie Mae  [ 1977 - Discogs ] . What A Trip that One was, Kieran!

  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 162 | Family Gathering 3 (Susan Chan & Matt Raistrick)

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 162nd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud on January 30th 2024. About this show. – I remember when I spoke to Douglas a few days ago , insisting that this blog was not about me but about us. I had this beautiful sentence "And that's also something I learned thanks to Colleen... It's US... it's just US... US as music lovers, the music that's being played during the show, the artists who make it and Her... Her as a Professional... an Absolute Human Professional..." There you go, Colleen; you've just been awarded a new title from your Balearic Breakfast Family, the AHP one! Congratulations! Joking aside, it is really Heartwarming to share music all together with our dear Captain. It really is! Being given the opportunity to share our musical worlds with such a great musical radio host, I mean, that's the icing on the cake, right? For this week's show, Colleen asked Susan, whom I interviewed earlier on the blog (read here), and Matt Raistrick to craft mixes for us as she's still travelling around the globe: "I haven’t brushed my hair in weeks but at least my clothes are clean and that in itself is a feat when you’re on the road. This week’s Balearic Breakfast is now up on my Mixcloud for your listening-back pleasure. This week we are joined by two more members of our global Balearic Breakfast family: @sansan.ot  from New York / New Jersey and @matt_raistrick  from Greater Manchester. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with Susan and her husband Jeff, their daughters and her brother-in-law (an amazing roller skater) at various parties in New York and it’s great to see her shine on this mix. Matt requests songs each week (at least when the request line is up) and they are all worth checking out as he has a great ear. Once again both mixes are fantastic. And thank you to all who made the past 2 shows reach Number 1 on the Mixcloud Balearic chart. Thanks to all who joined in the chat on the live stream of the show. Your encouragement and support of one another is truly inspiring, and thank you for making this community a beacon of positivity. We all need more of that in our lives." Let's keep the fire burning and embrace these two great-sounding hours of pure Musical Bliss... Listen back to the 162nd episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Susan Chan Mix Pat Metheny Group – Are You Going with Me? (Daniel Monaco edit) Tina Turner – We Don't Need Another Hero (Plastic Fantastic instrumental Dub) THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Susan's mix very quickly gave me the impression of a river flowing to its destiny: the sea... She was thrilled to have done this mix for us: "It’s a mix of old and new favourite tracks of mine. Definitely a privilege to put something together for the Balearic breakfast family!" (to read my interview with Susan, click here ) . Every track follows the previous one in a beautiful musical flow, and there is an underlying tension to the whole mix, something intangible yet very strong, something that pushes the listener, a driving force, a musical engine. I felt that so strongly that it even reaffirmed some thoughts I had for the last few days about how we could be more Balearic in our lives. But we'll come back to these thoughts later in this post. Opening her set with the absolutely sad track Pat Metheny Group – Are You Going with Me? [ 1982 - Discogs ] really surprised me as I thought it was rather a closing song. Still, when I gave it a second thought, "Are you going with me?" really is a plea; it's a question waiting for an answer, but the answer to that question will not change the Destiny of the one who asks it. It's an affirmation, it's an affirmative question, the underlying answer being "no matter what you'll do, I'll go. If you want to stay by my side, I'd really love it, but I can't force you, my destiny is waiting and I can't stay here longer..." Strangely enough, I searched the internet to find more information about this heartwrenching song and only found these few lines: "It's a special song, probably one of the favourites of my own songs, and it is my favourite song to play live with the group. There really is no story to it. i was just trying to find a way to use that c minor/a flat major common tone thing that i love so much in a way that sounded good to me. it was written very fast, basically i improvised it into the synclav in the same amount of time it takes to play one chorus. i don't think i ever changed a note of it - it seemed just fine. i then remember playing along on the (at the time new) roland guitar for about 5 hours without stopping - always a good sign for a new tune. if it is about anything for me (other than the c minor/a flat thing i was talking about) it is about a little walk that i took just before i wrote it near where it was written. (upstate new york) - somehow i always think of that when i hear it. but most people make up their own thing of what that song is "about" and they are all pretty different definitions from each other - and i think that is also a good sign for a tunes life". Then enters the second song, Laid Back – Fly Away/Walk in the Sunshine [ 1983 - Discogs ] , with a visual accent to it, almost like a feather falling somewhere; beautiful mix, by the way, simple yet very effective. This song directed me towards the image of the river. That rhythm really lets you picture the free and generous but somewhat boiling waters ( if the sound of that song reminds you of something, search no further as Laid Back was responsible for the Hit "Sunshine Reggae" that can be found on the same album "Fly away" has been taken from, namely "Keep smiling" from 1983 ). Since it's very long too, "Fly Away/Walk in the Sunshine" accentuates the idea of the Flow, which is well maintained with the following song, Aswad – Dub Fire [ 1982 - Discogs ] . Can you feel the lingering tension in the music's tonality, too? Nothing is really happy here for the time being. And we keep that "uneasiness" during Sade – Why Can't We Live Together [ 1984 - Discogs ] (the original being by Timmy Thomas from 1972 ), which tends to show that Susan has a trained ear as she was able to create here a beautiful musical unity. I love how Sade's song enters the mix, with an uncertain affirmation followed by Los Niños – Star Odyssey [ 2021 - Bandcamp ] , and the river is still flowing strong. Keeping the rhythm intact, Susan's next choice seems absolutely logical in the "déroulé" of her mix; such a great choice putting the very ocean-driven Moloko – Forever More (Francois K & Erik Kupper Vocal Mix) [ 2003 - Discogs ] here! This beautiful and strong musical moment is followed by Jacob Gurevitsch – Elevation in Minor (Cosmodelica Remix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] ( read a review here ) , a track we all love I believe! Ending this somewhat romanticosad mix , Susan proposes to us the beautiful Paul Young – Every Dub (Pete Blaker Balearic Dub Edit) . "Everytime You Go Away" , released in 1985 on Paul's "The Secret Association" studio effort, was, in fact, written by Daryl Hall and originally recorded by Hall & Oates for their 1980 studio album, Voices. Yet, it has not been released as a single; Young's version becoming a hit nearly five years later. Daryl Hall listed this version as one of his favourite Hall & Oates songs and explained, in various interviews: "Paul Young had a pop hit with it a few years after we released it. It's just one of those songs. I feel very proud of its craftsmanship. I never thought of it any other way than the way it was 'til Paul Young did it ... I was just doin' a kind of gospel/soul song; that was all I had in mind for it. I was really surprised to hear the production they did because it kept the elements but commercialized it - made it sound like a pop record" . As I said in the beginning, this mix got me thinking that we, as humans, should try to take things with distance, especially when we're drawn into situations we absolutely can't control. We should try to distance ourselves from what is coming at us, what is "attacking" us and know that we are not That situation . We should allow ourselves to surpass any situation that we encounter; this should help us to keep our emotional balance. And this is where the image of the river is interesting. Can you see Why? (...) Matt's mix is the most laid-back, unpretentious mix I've ever heard, yet its structure is nice, it does exist (it pops out musically, so that's great, too), and its last part is just perfect, right up until the end, where the Plastic Fantastic instrumental Dub serves as a beautiful ending credit list. We actually did a great interview together that you can read here . Starting his mix with the very soothing Steve Hiett  – Kinda Knew Anna [ 2019 - Discogs ] , whose album "Girls in the grass" contains unreleased material recorded between 1986 and 1997, Matt breaks the flow with Simon Peter – You Don't Send Me Slow Waves Anymore [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] . Simon shared his thoughts on his Facebook about this very song a few weeks ago, saying "Key inspiration for this track was Cornelius - 'Point of View Point' (Yann Tomita mix) - a track I've loved for years!" Matt keeps on surprising us as he, once again, breaks the rhythmical flow by selecting Citron Citron – Tu m'as Reveillé Dans Mon Sommeil [ 2022 - Bandcamp ] (you woke me up from my sleep) and Statues – Comienzio [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , which beautifully ends the first part of this mix . When you think about it, musically, "Tu m'as reveillé dans mon sommeil" is a nursery rhyme! The lyrics are gentle and present a "love story for two voices": Augustin sings the male version while Zoé sings the female version of the lyrics. The brother and the sister present an unconventional love song which really got into our hearts. Even though the English translation can not reproduce the duality created in this song, the lyrics go like this "I was crazy/ I was alone/You told me that the pain/Was worth it/And you woke me up in my sleep/Aaaa/I was terrible/in my cocoon/You told me that life/Was worth the effort/ And you woke me up in my sleep/Aaaa/I was lame/Without ecstasy/You told me that love/Was worth the effort/And you woke me up in my sleep/Aaaa" . Obviously, Matt wanted to convey, in this first part of his mix, a Balearic Message, regardless of the musical unity, and that's great as every track shines in its own independent way! Then, nicely keeping up the rhythm for the first time, Matt takes us to the second part of the mix, starting his journey with Sade – Love is Stronger than Pride (Mad Professor remix) [ 1996 - Discogs ] , beautifully followed by Lova – Venizia 26 02 [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] ( click here for an interview I did with the great Davide Lovato). This moment of the mix really shows you Matt's freedom; there is a constant "take off", and surprise is always lurking from an invisible corner... The last two tracks, nicely mixed together by the way, and preparing us for the next big part of Matt's musical journey, are Optimystic – Trust Me [ 1991 - Discogs ] & Ichisan – Vitranc '86' [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] . Finally, from Ron Basejam – FAKE [ 2016 - Bandcamp ] , you can hear the same sample in the tribute " JTHZ MIx " I did ( Julius Thysen & Hens Zimmerman ); Matt takes us onto the Dancefloor for a nice boogie, which deserves to be given the Wow effect ! There are no rhythmical breaches here; the flow is real. We surely don't need another DJ, but we do love Record cueers when they know what they're doing, and that's exactly what happens here with the next five songs that are Tooli – Solution Dub [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , DENA – Idealize (Lauer Remix) [ 2023 - Bandcamp ] , Jean Claude Gavri/Howard Jones – Mental Chains [ 2021 - Bandcamp ] , Jean Claude Gavri/Pet Shop Boys – Love Trip & Captain Sensible – Wot! (Daniel Monaco edit) [ 2022 - Bandcamp ] !!! Matt ends his mix with a perfect closing track, Tina Turner – We Don't Need Another Hero (Plastic Fantastic instrumental Dub) [ 2021 - Bandcamp ] .

  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 163 | Family Gathering 4 (Bert François & DJ_Emma)

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 163rd episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud on February 6th 2024. About this show. – Sometimes things don't go as planned. And, believe me, I will always be the first to try to be helpful when such situations occur . Firstly, we're all humans; we can make mistakes, and it's okay to make mistakes. It's part of life. Secondly, way too often, I have seen fingers pointing at me when I failed to do a task I ought to do, leading to an unbelievable amount of criticism and anger, leading to crises . Remember, when something does not work out as planned, the first thing to do , even if you're managing people , is to understand what happened. What is done is done, and your anger, your shouting or your reproaches won't help the matter (plus, you'll be adding unnecessary pressure to the already tense situation...). So, first, take the time to analyse what happened, why it happened, and maybe that's something that can be fixed easily for next time. By understanding our mistakes or helping others who did them to understand what happened, we can move on and improve ourselves. Of course, if you're a manager and you feel this should not have happened, you have the right to take decisions afterwards, with an objective mindset. But anger or shouting won't help the case, so show some calmness and understanding. It will add motivation, discussion and improvement, eluding exhausting anger and any other unwanted feelings between you and those you're working with. Simply be objective; that's really Enough. As a teacher once told me, " Only those who do nothing never make mistakes ". We were all eagerly waiting for that 162nd episode because we knew Colleen was going to stream Bert's and DJ Emma's mixes. Sadly, Colleen couldn't stream these two due to technical difficulties, so we listened to the previous show on Mixcloud, supporting Colleen, who felt terrible about what had just happened. And we all stayed with our dear Captain, supporting her. Shit can happen, but you always must put into balance why things happen; that's the first thing to do before anything else may eventually come into play . Believe me, streaming Balearic Breakfast away from home while on tour in a different time zone is not easy (and Mixcloud can be tricky, too, it seems!): our dear Captain just did that for a whole month ( I couldn't stop the lion cub from jumping into your arms Colleen, sorry! )... So, once our sadness left our hearts, we cheered our dear Captain up and stayed all together on Mixcloud, enjoying the previous show (while Eagerly waiting for Colleen to put Bert's and Emma's Mix on Mixcloud!) and having a Memorable Chinwag . All I can say is that Bert's and DJ_Emma's mixes were absolutely worth waiting for . These two mixes are among the sexiest and the coolest mixes ever streamed we got to hear through our Family Meetings. What an incredible way to end this first series of Family Gatherings! So, without further ado, let's hear this 162nd episode of Balearic Breakfast as it was meant to be!! Listen back to the 163rd episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST Bert François' Mix Jean Carn – Revelation / Infant Eyes Millie Jackson  – A Love of Your Own Phyllis Hyman  – The Love Too Good to Last Webster Lewis  – Give Me Some Emotion Sidney Barnes  – Your Love Is So Good to Me Dionne Warwick  – You're Gonna Need Me Eramus Hall  – Just Me 'n' You The Love Unlimited Orchestra  – Strange Games & Things Scott Grooves ft. The sexiness starts with the great Millie Jackson's – A Love of Your Own [ 1976-Discogs ] ; a song which was written by the Average White band and first released in July 1976. By the way, did you hear that beautiful and light mix Bert proposed here? It's not the last time that you're going to feel Bert's sensual touch during this mix, let me tell that to you right away! This mix depicts so perfectly a sensual evening shared by the couple of your choice; just close your eyes, and you'll see the moves, the closeness, and the desire pouring out of the love these two individuals share tonight on the screen of your inner desires... Enters, with a nice discretion, Phyllis Hyman  – The Love Too Good to Last [ 1981-Discogs ] showing that sometimes the perfect touch is not the ever-lasting one but the one swaying on your body just like an oceanic wave, slowly leading you to your most unmentionable desires... This very song was written by Peter Allen, Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and was first sung by the Pointer Sisters on their 1980 Special Things album. The groove is good, the groove is here, and it is led by a man knowing a lot about Music and Love, for sure! Bert knows how to keep the rhythm on; he's a personified groove, and his beat will never let you down; listen to how beautifully Webster Lewis – Give Me Some Emotion [ 1979-Discogs ] enters the mix! This song was composed by Webster and covered by Merry Clayton as "Emotions" in 1980. The swayin' is definitely on as Sidney Barnes – Your Love is So Good to Me [ 1978-Discogs ] starts, and it ain't gonna stop so soon. Bert's mix will focus on this love affair for 3/4 of its running time, which is quite unusual here on Balearic Breakfast, as the mixes are often divided into two even parts. So it's nice to have a mix that takes that slight departure from this structure, especially when you take into account how Bert ends it... But we're going to talk about it later, as, for the time being, Bert keeps on making us dance to the slow and oh-so-sexy rhythm! I love how Bert joins the previous track with Dionne Warwick  – You're Gonna Need Me [ 1973-Discogs ] , in what we could call a "musical" " Fil d'Arianne " which keeps on leading us with Eramus Hall  – Just Me 'n' You [ 1980-Discogs ] ! Did you know that the song "You're Gonna Need Me" was composed and produced by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier & Eddie Holland, the three of them being responsible for Countless Motown hits including "Reach Out I'll Be There" or even "Where Did Our Love Go"? Another interesting fact you might not know about is that Lamont Dozier was invited by Claude François to France in the 1970s when he released "Going Back to My Roots"! They actually sang several songs together live for a French TV show! We gently reached the second part of Bert's mix, and he shows no sign of slowing down the sexy, very playful dance! Talking about the playful dance, the next number (a cover of " Strange Funky Games and Things" by Jay Dee issued on his beautifully sounding 1974 "Come on in Love" album, produced by Barry White and Tom Brock ! ) The Love Unlimited Orchestra  – Strange Games & Things [ 1976-Discogs ] slightly changes the rhythm, but that change is very soft and playful, almost acting like some kind of "mistake" in the course of the mix, an unexpected touch on an almost forgotten area, so well done! A perfect mix is a mix that surprises you, a mix in which you allow yourself to sway, a mix that shows some kind of vulnerability, bringing images to your mind, and Bert's mix exactly does that here! Slowly bringing in the next track, Scott Grooves ft. Chris Codish  – Organ Nights [ 2000-Discogs ] , Bert keeps the surprise element of his mix very alive; we're suspended to his magic fingers, and we really can't get enough! What a musical taste Berts shows to us tonight! The last 15 minutes or so of Bert's mix will be more groovy. Still, the tracks he chose to share here, despite their quicker rhythm, do share a very high degree of sexiness, perfectly showcasing that a track can be quicker but still bring sexiness to the forefront! Bert is not the one who will show off as he keeps his delicate touch perfectly on the beat for the next number, Hayden Andre presents Subculture  – The Voyage (Hayden Andre Deep Mix) [ 1991-Discogs ] ! The last song, Indigo ft. Joy Malcolm – Fly to the Moon (Mood II Swing Remix) [ 1995-Discogs ] enters the mix with a slight precipitation enhanced by its somewhat "abrupt" start, but it has that "openness" that really suits the whole vibe very well! DJ Emma is a favourite of mine. I love her soft voice, her broad musical taste and her joyfulness when she's surrounded by musical friends! You might not know it, but she is the one whom I wanted to interview the first when this blog was only a dream! And I made this dream come true (read the interview we did together here )... DJ Emma's mix is a perfect example of a woman doing her thing and reaching beautiful heights (she's not afraid of them...), thanks to her gentleness and also thanks to her great ear! The first two tracks, which are Peter Brown  – Without Love [ 1978-Discogs ] and As Ganhadeiras de Itapua  – Mare Mansa [ 2014-Bandcamp ] , pair so well together... It's like a living painting animating itself in front of your eyes; listen to the beautiful closeness of the notes these two tracks share! Keeping the rhythm balancing, Emma chooses to play Quincy Jones  – Summer in the City (Old Smokey Edit) [ Bandcamp ] ; here, the mix allies both the closeness of the music and of the rhythm, the living painting keeps on moving in front of our eyes whilst we're being taken out of reality in this beautiful musical trip... It takes a great deal of Knowledge to be a good DJ, and Emma has that without a shadow of a doubt! We're drawn into a new chapter of our adventure, I just think about it now, as I write these lines, but this mix resembles a lot to a track Emma issued not so long ago, Bliss ... Terry Callier  – Imagine a Nation [ 2002-Bandcamp ] is an incredible trip, taken from Callier's 2002 "Speak your peace" studio album; beautifully followed by Mel & Tim  – Keep the Faith [ 1973-Discogs ] , a cover of Mark James's song released in April 1973 on his self-titled album, that also got covered by the great Lou Rawls later in 1974 on his " She's Gone " studio album! The second half of Emma's mix will take us into a more groovy side of things, but I can assure you that the Wow effect this mix is, will not diminish at all. You're going to be Wowed people, I can guarantee you that and I hope you feel the groove this mix really is... Did you hear how Emma chose to blend “Keep the Faith” with Psychemajik – Your Love Was Meant For Me [ 2017-Bandcamp ] , allowing her to step up the rhythm just a tiny bit? And aren't you on your knees just when Tina Turner  – I Can't Stand the Rain [ 1984-Discogs ] enters the mix?! Yeah, I know you now understand why I told you these two mixes were the sexiest we ever got to hear during these Family gatherings (laughs)! You're also now keen to understand why I was saying that Emma was reaching Heights, oh my beloved risky DJ, you're Shining here!! Words can not express the magic a true DJ is able to create. You're Wowed, and so am I; everything is OK... By the way, "I Can't stand the Rain" was originally recorded by Ann Peebles in 1973, ranking at 197 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and was very famously covered by Eruption on their 1979 studio album " Leae a light " which contained over covers of well-known songs such as " One way Ticket " or " I'll leave a light in my window "! Let's Dance as Pino D'Angio – Ma Quale Idea [ 1981-Discogs ] enters the mix ( click here to read a great interview with Pino d'Angio)! Keeping the rhythm perfectly steady, Emma then lets Alex Kassian  – Leave Your Life [ 2021-Discogs ] , based on a sample of YES ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ , present itself with a musical naturality that's not to be explained anymore here (laughs)! As Laura Green – Manhattan (Horse Meat Disco) [ 2009-Bandcamp ] arrives in the mix with a nice solidity to it (the original song is from 1979), it seems we're flying, aren't we?! Keeping a steady Rhythm with David Bendeth  – Feel the Real [ 1979-Discogs ] , the song was initially intended to be an instrumental only; Emma is going to take us to an absolutely ecstatic state of mind to end her mix, firstly by gently slowing down the rhythm with Brittany Howard   – Stay High [ 2019-Bandcamp ] and then by reaching eternity with the mindblowing ASHA  – Ball & Chain (JJ Tribute) (LG Giobbi Remix) [ 2021-Beatport ] , which beautifully uses Janis Joplin's vocals from a live show she gave in 1972 ... Did we just meet at the other side of this painting hanging on that Balearic Wall?...

  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 164 | Loft Expansions...

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 164th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on February 20th 2024. About this show. – Sometimes, and this is also something I learned thanks to Colleen, it's okay to simply let the silence speak... This is how I feel today for a Lot of Good and Important reasons... On February 14th 2024, Colleen shared with us this message. I feel it belongs here... "Today is the 54th anniversary of David Mancuso’s Loft parties and I woke up reflecting upon David’s impact upon my life. When David asked me to be ‘chair wo/man’ of The Loft, he wrote, ‘ You are the best person for it. You have proven to be a good friend to me and the Loft. You are also involved in the music scene - dj/producer/owner of a dance business/audio awareness….the list goes on. You have all the ‘know how’s’ as I do with all aspects and are faithful to the principals. Also you are a woman and this give the ‘yin-yang’ balance to the over all concepts.’ It was important to David that I build my own musical worlds and these are a few of the things he taught me... The Life Energy of Music - David and I listened to records together for hundreds of hours and he taught me that even if a record is particularly cool for the moment all that matters is whether it can convey a healing force. He transformed the way I listen to music. Sonics - David pointed out how to closely listen to the EQ of the mix and the mastering and the quality of the pressing. All three processes must be done correctly so that the music can sing and come alive as great sound systems don’t lie. Deep Listening - Classic Album Sundays is a culmination of my musical vocation (record shops, radio shows, interviews, journalism, sound production) but David taught me about audiophile sound and listening to music in the way the artist intended. Community - David built a global Loft family and inspired people to do their own thing and more importantly, create friendships beyond borders. Balearic Breakfast is also a global family - duly noted during my recent travels in Oz and New Zealand - and has inspired listeners to DJ, make playlists, and create a community blog. I’m so proud. Safe Sound - David once told me that good sound is a human right. So is safe sound and that’s why your ears do not ring when you leave a Loft party. In tribute to David and to celebrate this year’s anniversary, I’m getting a hearing test this weekend. Watch this space. Love saves the day." And, as far as this very episode is concerned, Colleen shared this post with us, today: "On this week's show we pay tribute to The Loft, the party started by my dear friend David Mancuso 54 years ago on the 14th February 1970. I asked members of the worldwide Loft community to contribute a song and a story and on this show we are joined by many including DJ Will of Carry Nation , Paul and Barbie of Love Injection , Jeannie Hopper of Liquid Sound Lounge , wonderboy producer / engineer Chris Berg and one of house music's finest pioneers, Yvonne Turner . We also have a beautiful story from Richard Horstman , David's nephew and the Administer of the David Mancuso Estate. And I also share the last piece of music that David and I listened to together. Thanks for joining me, thanks for listening and Love Saves the Day." Listen back to the 164th episode of Balearic Breakfast: THE PLAYLIST Nina Simone – Here Comes the Sun Ahmad Jamal – Poinciana Donald Byrd – Love Has Come Around Groove Collective – She's So Heavy Dexter Wansel – Life on Mars Crown Heights Affair – Say a Prayer for Two James Wells – True Love is My Destiny Beautiful Bend – Make That Feeling Come Again/ Ah - Do It Fussy Cussy – La Vita Frankie Knuckles ft. Nicki Richards – Keep on Movin' (Danny Krivit's La Familia Re-Edit) Ashford & Simpson – Bourgie Bourgie (Joe Claussell's Classic Remix) Diana Ross – The Boss Morgana King – A Taste of Honey THE LISTENING EXPERIENCE Our Joy was pure today; our Joy was strong for many important reasons. First of all, Adam & Colleen came back from touring the southern hemisphere. So we were happy as can be to have them back and seeing Colleen in her record room really felt Good! We missed that space, that's for sure! Also, we were celebrating the Family spirit that literally took off with Colleen's help, allowing some members of the Family to propose mixes of their own under Colleen's musical impulse while she was travelling; some of us doing it for the first time ever as Bert said it "I was really honoured to be a participant in the mixes during Cosmo's break and enjoyed everyone's mix sets, it's the first time I have done anything like that" . It was so great hearing how our friends rock their own Balearic Boats! We all loved that very, very much! Last, but not least, we were celebrating the Loft's 54 Anniversary with Colleen in today's show but also the Superbowl! As Bert put it, "There's so much to celebrate: Love Saves the Say anniversary, the lunar new year, Mardi Gras, and the Swifties team winning the Superbowl. :-)" . There you go, here's our Happiness ^^ I think you can understand why I could not add anything to that Feeling... This show is one to keep for your records... A beautiful musical selection made by people who have experienced the Loft, who actually met David or who are part of his Family (Richard Horstman, David's nephew, joined us today), full of short stories and Musical memories alike. An essential episode if you ask me! We even had the pleasure of having Pete Blaker with us. I can't be happier than today, can I? OK. Let's dive into Music now! Starting the show with Nina Simone's – Here Comes the Sun [ 1971-Discogs ] , Colleen shares with us from the very start one of David's most beloved tracks; if my memory serves me well, David did play that one at the end of some of the Loft's parties as a new day was dawning... I just came to realise that Nina's version has a very ethereal touch to the song. Her version could represent someone waking up in heaven and walking towards a new and eternal journey, and it seems I am not the only one feeling this way: " Nina Simone lays down the gauntlet with the opening, titular track, taken from the catalog of the Certified Greatest Rock Band Who Ever Lived. Simone blows them clean out of the water. The original “Here Comes the Sun” is a stoned, lazy, good-vibes kind of a song. “It’s alright,” George Harrison sings, but he doesn’t make it sound too much better than that. Simone takes it a couple hundred miles further. Her jazz training kicks in, and she hits strange notes few pop artists could even find on the scale, bouncing around in patterns well divorced from the usual pop melodies. She warps the Beatles’ descending phrase, ending on a high note she seems to reach for as if she was reaching for the sun itself. By the last chorus, she hits the edge of her range and holds it for a mood of transcendent yearning that gives me chills. When she says, “It’s alright,” it’s not a good vibe, it’s a hard-won victory. You really believe “It’s been years since it’s been here.” " . Beautiful show opener, of course! Then, Ahmad Jamal – Poinciana [ 1958-Discogs ] , a track that was played during the first London loft party (listen to it here - I tried a first restoration of that party but did not keep it as I was unsatisfied with the result; I am working on a new edition as I speak...), reminds us that the Loft embraced all musical genres, thus being absolutely Balearic in its own right! For the next song, Colleen took us right back to 1984, when David Held his last Loft Party at Prince St. with Donald Byrd – Love Has Come Around  [ 1981-Discogs ] ! The first Wow effect of the show came with the incredible cover of a Beatle's Classic : Groove Collective – She's So Heavy [ 1996-Discogs ] . What a mesmerizing musical moment that was! If you want to listen to a much different and heavier version, Halestorm is waiting for you just here . There's also something in Colleen's voice that was so Joyful in that 163rd episode; she was glowing, and you should have seen her dancing; my goodness gracious, I think we were all on fire just as she was as she swayed during Dexter Wansel – Life on Mars [ 1976-Discogs ] ! Listen to the Loft Special (with M. Riley & D. Wansel): Keeping the groove on, Colleen took us away with another track played at Prince St. in 1984, with Crown Heights Affair – Say a Prayer for Two [ 1978-Discogs ] ! I remember sharing my thoughts on the chat about how much the Klipschorns were the only loudspeakers that were able to truly reproduce detailed information from the lower sonic register, being then joined by Popdiscorules, who said that the Klipschorns sounded even better lately at the new London Loft's location ! Colleen's mixing was Joyful, too; you can clearly hear that as she launched the beautiful James Wells – True Love is My Destiny [ 1978-Discogs ] ! While surfing on the net, searching for information about that very song, I stumbled on Ian Levine's Bandcamp page and decided to share here the text that goes with it: "When British producer Ian Levine saw the soul group 100% Poison live in concert in 1974 he was immediately impressed by the outrageous lead singer, a flamboyant gay man from Chicago, James Wells. Due to contractual reasons Levine had to wait another two years before being able to sign him up for a deal at Polydor Records where they released 4 singles during 1976 and 1977. By March 1978 Levine had completed their first album, My Claim To Fame. "My music publisher, Mike Collier, took me over to Los Angeles, and he set up lots of appointments there for us, with just about every major record company in the city," said Levine. We played our album to fourteen different record companies, but shockingly, all of them passed on it, without any hesitation at all, making it blatantly obvious that they were not even remotely interested. On the other hand, Rick Gianatos himself was utterly one hundred percent convinced that it was a smash hit album, and he took it straight over to his colleague, Ray Harris, over at AVI Records. He persuaded Ray to sign it there and then on the spot." By October 1978, My Claim To Fame peaked at #4 on the Billboard Disco Charts, selling a phenomenal 100,000 copies. True Love Is My Destiny was another much-played track from the album (later CD versions of the album included a 9-min. edit, my video includes the full version of nearly 13 minutes). I have expanded the album with the track Never Let Go that was originally left off as Gianatos could not stand Wells's wailing vocal on top of it. He eventually stripped the lead vocal, and the track was released with the backing vocals only under the name Eastbound Expressway, giving Levine another disco hit record. Wells himself went on to record a second album, Explosion, in 1979 and another couple of sides with Levine in the mid-80s. Sadly, he passed away around 1990 from an AIDS-related disease. Here's to his "Claim To Fame". One of the things I adore about Balearic Breakfast is discovering new music. I was ecstatic when hearing James Wells; I went down on my Knees when discovering Beautiful Bend – Make That Feeling Come Again/ Ah - Do It  [ 1978-Discogs ] , laughs! By the way, as a single, the track was issued on the great T.K. Disco Label ! What a way to start the second hour of the show ( click here to listen to one of Yvonne Turner's great mixes – thanks, Kieran, for the link🌞)! Keeping the rhythm steady, Colleen then plays another well-known Loft Classic, Fussy Cussy – La Vita [ 1976-Discogs ] , nicely followed by the incredible Frankie Knuckles ft. Nicki Richards – Keep on Movin' (Danny Krivit's La Familia Re-Edit) [ 2001-Discogs ] ! How do you end a show like this one? Well, simply by adding classics that open up your mind, setting the right mood to start the day (or to end it depending on your time zone, laughs!), and Ashford & Simpson – Bourgie Bourgie (Joe Claussell's Classic Remix) [ 2017-Discogs ] is, of course, one of them ( I just discovered that the song's title is a reference to the French word "Bourgeoisie", "Bourgie" designing, in slang, someone aspiring to be a higher class than he is), followed by Diana Ross – The Boss  [ 1979-Discogs ] . Produced by our beloved duo Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson , the song (and the album of the same name from which it is being taken) helped Diana Ross to kick the charts again after a few years of "Calmness" (do you feel how Colleen is working? There's a hint right there ^^). Every dream has got to end, but, as I said, when you choose your tracks wisely, you can convey the right feeling... Ending the show with a falling feather, Morgana King – A Taste of Honey  [ 1964-Discogs ] reminds us of important things in our lives and how eternal they can become... Thank you again Colleen ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ and thank you everyone who continues to support Colleen as she continues to help carry on the Legacy of my Uncle David and his TRUE LOFT TRADITIONS and memories. Much love to everyone ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈 Richard Horstman

  • Balearic Breakfast | Episode 165 | The 'Down Under' Special - Meeting Mildlife

Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy broadcast the 165th episode of Balearic Breakfast on her Mixcloud and Twitch TV socials on February 27th 2024. About this show. – You can't get bored when you listen to Balearic Breakfast. There's no chance at all. This episode is so rich musically that it just blew our minds, and we, of course, enjoyed the interview with Mildlife, a band we deeply love for its "electronic" musical sound. But let's hang the mic over to Colleen! " This week's Balearic Breakfast is an Australian / New Zealand special featuring some of the music I picked up and some of the artists I discovered when I was ‘down under’ earlier this year. There are a couple of special exclusives on today’s show – an exclusive debut of a new Flamingo Pier track which they have just posted on their Bandcamp for the occasion, and an exclusive mix from and an interview with Mildlife who have a new album called Chorus coming out this week on Heavenly Recordings. There’s so much great music to discover, and of course, I can’t get to all of it, but tune in for cosmic jazz, psychedelic funk, neo-soul, and some bumpin’ balearica…" Listen back to the 165th episode of Balearic Breakfast: PLAYLIST ( 2023 )   The Circling Sun – Spirits ( 2021 ) Glass Beams – Mirage ( 2023 ) Christoph el' Truento – Fisherman's Dub  ( 2023 ) Dallas Tamaira – Levels ( 2021 ) Mara TK – Highly Medicated ( 2024 ) Mildlife – Yourself ( 2024 ) Flamingo Pier – Deeper Soul (Make a Dance Remix) ( 2022 ) Summer Vee – Key to All Your Love ( 2024 ) Eden Burns – Where Were U in 92 ( 2020 ) Troy Kingi – Chronophobic Disco ( 2024 ) Gratts ft. Influenced by artists such as Alice and John Coltrane, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Tom Waits and even Mulato Astatke, the collective Circling Sun was founded back in 2000, including renowned jazz musicians, crate-diggers, producers and DJs (now that's something musically original and rarely seen!), and is led by drummer Julien Dyne. Such a perfect show opener! Faithfull to her delicate way of taking the Family into new musical depths, Colleen then chose the strange and worried Mirage , which, with its Indian accents (almost Japanese if you ask me ^^) , let us delve more into our subconscious minds as Fisherman's Dub comes to meet us expanding this 'Down Under' Journey. I remember sharing with Colleen the Trapdoor mix and these first selections make me think about that mix blending cosmic, funky, jazzy sounds with Pop music! When Levels came in , I knew I had already heard that voice from somewhere; of course, I did, thanks to Fat Freddy's Drop and Jazzanova! I discovered the band and (some) of its members with the " Of All The Things " 2008 studio album while I was looking to purchase two Jelco tonearms for my Technics SL-1210 turntables (the dream became true )! I remember stumbling across that video and falling in love with the Music (Dallas Tamaira appears on " What Do You Want ?" ) - and the tonearm, of course (laughs)!... With the next track, a favourite of our dear Ana Maria who requested it some time ago (showing how much all of our commune musical listening dreams do come true and why we truly are a musical Family...), Highly Medicated   by Mara TK , Colleen slowly stepped up our Balearic Rhythms, also musically prepping us for today's guests, Mildlife, by playing Yourself from their forthcoming new studio album, Chorus. Keeping a "Distanced Balearic Groove", Colleen then chose to play the quite oceanic and cosmic vibing (I love writing these reviews, laughs!) Flamingo Pier's Deeper Soul (Make a Dance Remix) . Key to All Your Love  has that "something sounding" from Sade, don't you think? Singer-songwriter/guitarist Summer Vaha'akolo collaborated with producer Sterling, saxophonist JY Lee and drummer Julien Dyne ( Half Hexagon & The Cycling Sun ) on her latest studio effort, which was very well received . Eden Bruns then takes us higher with the "dubby" and dreamy-sounding Where Were U in 92 , followed by Troy Kingi's Chronophobic Disco , this moment of the show making me think that I don't like it when tracks end up abruptly because they break their own spell! Keeping the rhythm steady to end the first part of today's show, bringing up a very "Carnivalian" atmosphere, Colleen plays Rhythm of Love , ending with Musica , which made me think of another well-known track ... For the second part of this "Down Under Special", Colleen did an interview with two members of " Mildlife ", Adam and Jim! Now, if you're a regular listener of the show, you know that Colleen did a remix of one of their songs  and also that the band is regularly featured during the show (see Episodes 12  & 146 ,  for instance)!
