Once again, in this new episode, Colleen demonstrates how great she is at crafting coherent mixes, not just musically speaking, but also intellectually. The first hour is an absolute masterpiece; the selected songs share an intimate message. Colleen's mix, flawless as usual, intensifies the initial musical intent by allowing the listener's spirit to form mental images as he drifts away...
Let’s dive deeper… The show starts with the airy, forward-looking instrumental Greyscale. It perfectly allows the listener to feel, for the first time, the windy feeling. Then, the second song, River Man, originally sung by Nick Drake, reinforces that first feeling, on an intellectual level: take the time to listen carefully, you will clearly understand that this song is about “the passage of time, the Seasons of life, and of loss”, quite windy, don’t you think? How do you feel when you have to make changes in your life? It isn’t always a “peaceful” time, and the song's structure and depth allow you to picture the dreams lying somewhere… Gonna see the river man, Gonna tell him all I can, about the plan, for lilac time…
This beautiful musical and intellectual unity will keep on evolving through the first hour of the show, and both Ground Loop (with its somewhat worried and jazzy feel allowing you to picture palm trees being bent by a fierce wind…) and of course Trade Winds (despite its lighter musical domain, it is a tense musical moment where you can feel a certain tension), keep on carrying the initial message at arm’s length.
Colleen’s delicate mix enhances the message. It does not try to keep the music flowing in an automated way. You can clearly feel the groove there too, and the musical selections she made are clearly linked together perfectly, aren’t they?!
En La Playa Blanca (listen to the depth of this track, the use of the effects and how they allow you to lose your mind), followed by the perfect and funky number Rmoosh Arabiya, opening the second half of the show’s first hour, keeps the vibrant wind alive and well. Clearly, Colleen had something in mind here… Kotoa’s Love and Light also has that jazzy and windy touch, and it lands perfectly besides that! Our Windy trip keeps on taking us to higher grounds with Piper’s Summer breeze... Mmmh, do you start to feel me now? Laughs! Colleen is the Only One who's able to craft such wonderful sets, with so much imagery! Here is another great example, right?
Robot 84’s remix brings us back to the 90s, and his version of Voodoo Chile is another example of how windy this episode is! We’re almost reaching the end of the first hour, and as always, time flies! Of course, The Illusions’ Float has an interesting beginning if you see what I mean, laughs! I could go on and on, but I think you got the message by now.
The rest of the show keeps the message alive, and Colleen's mix is clearly perfect there! But, by the way, do you know where these trade winds will take us? …
