- Family members: Find Our Balearic Spirit (1/2)
"Find Our Balearic Spirit" is a DJ collective whose only music rule is "there are no rules". It doesn't matter what track we play if what we play helps us "Find Our Balearic Spirit". I had to discover more, so Follow me for a great interview with Bradley Circles! Ahead of Colleen Cosmo Murphy travelling back from New York to London. Colleen shared with the Balearic Breakfast Family she would not be able to curate a Balearic Breakfast show on Tuesday 30th May as she is coming back to London on the 30th. Bradley Circles messaged Colleen with "Artur has invited Find Our Balearic Spirit to be this month’s Balearic Breakfast Family feature, which is greatly appreciated. Artur and I have just discussed Find Our Balearic Spirit creating a mix to go with the Balearic Breakfast feature. As you are travelling back next Monday/Tuesday, how do you feel about this mix being shared with the Balearic Breakfast family as a show of appreciation to your amazing show, branded as a Find Our Balearic Spirit show and hosted on our Mixcloud page? Big love Bradley x" Colleen responded with "Go for it and thank you for asking! I love how this community and family becomes closer and stronger :). X" Big love to Colleen and the Balearic Breakfast family xx Find Our Balearic Spirit, Mixcloud, 29/05/2023 Listen to the exclusive mix created by FOBS and read on: Hello Bradley, thank you so much for joining me here on the Balearic Breakfast Blog! First thing first, who is behind « Find our Balearic Spirit » and why did you choose that name for the collective? I am old enough to have bought the original and ground-breaking Renaissance Mix CDs, which I still own and play regularly, along with going to Shindig at the Riverside in Newcastle, Back to Basics at the Music Factory in Leeds, Rise at the Leadmill in Sheffield, Cream at Nation in Liverpool, the Cross at King’s Cross, and Fabric on Charterhouse Street in London. I also had the privilege of seeing Daft Punk without their helmets on their Daftendirketour at the Mayfair in Newcastle in 1997. Sadly, the Mayfair is no longer there. However, a blue plaque reminds us of its heritage. After many years of hanging out with DJs (which I still do), the universe decided it was time I started digging, too, as I was given two turntables and a mixer. My record collection is forever growing, and I am incredibly grateful that numerous great record shops exist in Gateshead and Newcastle. So, a big up to Tony at 586 Records on Gateshead High Street and Nick, Paul, Al and Sam at Beatdown Records on Bewick Street, Newcastle! The acorn behind the name, "Find Our Balearic Spirit", came through my reading and understanding of what the late great David Mancuso created in New York City and, also, the lack of physical contact the COVID-19 pandemic caused (I appreciate the government lockdowns were necessary to control the spread of the virus). So, after 17 months without seeing my friends in person, I wanted to celebrate a friend’s belated 40th birthday in 2021 in the back of my garden and do it as the sun set on the Sunday of the Summer Bank Holiday. Unfortunately, due to a combination of folks not being able to get childcare and work covered on the day, the party didn’t happen. However, following David’s philosophy and wanting to bring friends together including friends we didn't meet yet, was sown. This acorn deserved a name, and as I wanted a name that could reflect David’s ethos of bringing people together, of course also offering a diverse music policy: "Find Our Balearic Spirit" was born. So, from here on in, friends, friends of friends and friends we are yet to make an answer when asked where we are going next, we're off to Find Our Balearic Spirit (laughs) ! Colleen’s show helped me and many other people become aware of the musical Balearic scene. What Balearic Breakfast also brought, in a very discrete, sensitive, yet at the same time profound way (thanks to Colleen’s emotional intelligence), is the philosophical aspect this musical movement carries within itself. According to you, what is that “Balearic Spirit” about, and how can we all make it shine in our own lives? For me, A Balearic Spirit is an open mind to all styles of music, an intention for everyone taking part in a party to have a great time, and a desire to be taken on a musical journey by a curator, selector, or DJ. How can we all make it in our own lives? Regardless of genre or style, I continually search for new physical and digital music. Whether by a long-forgotten artist from a previous decade or the latest release on two of my favourite labels (NuNorthern Soul or Claremont 56). Of course, other amazing labels are available. Get to know the people behind your local record store, the artists they like and why, research the artists they recommend and listen to their tracks. In Gateshead, there is a great record shop (586 Records) owned by Tony, whose musical knowledge is amazing, as are his recommendations. Also, in Newcastle, there is Beatdown Records, run by Nick and Paul, with Al always willing to share his recommendations and knowledge whether at the front of the shop or in the Vinyl Room in the back. Whenever I see Nick, he is always happy to share his extensive knowledge and throw in a recommendation or two. Ask for recommendations from your friends and your community and why they like an artist, a band, an album, a song/track, or a remix. Subscribe to your favourite curator, selector, or DJ’s podcast. For me currently, there are 3 great podcasts: The Bill Brewster, The DJ History, and Love is the Message. Find like-minded communities and get involved in them. For example, my community is a lovely ongoing conversation of recommendations, ideas, advice, and who is doing what on the following night. Another forward-thinking collective is Night Dancing, which has some amazing upcoming events, which we support by being there on the night and lending a hand when needed. I also continue to be a reader that loves handling a physical book in my hands, and who is eternally grateful for the journalists and authors that document the numerous music scenes and cultures worldwide. Current key books for me are Tim Lawrences’ New-York City-based book trilogy; Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton’s "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", and Peter Hook’s "How Not To run a Club". My go-to fanzine is "Faith" while "Disco Pogo" is still a magazine on the to-read list. My niece is currently into K-Pop, and I love learning new things from her, the artists, and the dance routines. I do not plan to play any of these artists but the world is a big place, and "Find Our Balearic Spirit" embraces all corners of the Earth. When I took the time to listen to some of the mixes you published on your Instagram, I was taken aback by the Musical Unity that “Find our Balearic Spirit” proposes. It is intemporal, light, modern, leaning towards lounge music without limiting itself to that specific genre since you’re able to open one of your shows with “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd! That’s a very pretty nice Tour de force; you guys have what one calls a true musical “editorial slant”! There is so much amazing music out there to choose from; I do not want to stay in one section of the Record Shop. My late Grandad was a member of a Cassette Club and had a very eclectic ear. He introduced me to Kraftwerk and the late John Peel on Radio 1, so the seed of listening to all styles of music was very much part of my upbringing. When I grew up, roles were reversed: I went from being the receiver to the provider of new music, as my Grandad embraced Progressive and Deep House. Like the late John Peel, he liked Orbital, and I asked "Belfast" to be played at his funeral. So, selecting Pink Floyd’s "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" is a great example of me selecting from all sections of a Record Shop. Not forgetting that my Grandad showed me how you can link music together so it flows effortlessly creating a beautiful and nourishing listening experience. What did you want to convey musically when you started this adventure? I want to curate a blissful, relaxed, and warm sound that wraps its arms around the listener and gives them an airtight hug and the feeling that they can be their true self in a welcoming and like-minded community. I appreciate that what I try to do is not for everybody, though everyone is welcome as every community evolves and grows. Even more so when new seeds are planted and cared for! Last but not least, what are your plans for the forthcoming future? We currently have a monthly show on Slack’s Radio, Tyne, and Weird Radio Station. We want to create more live interaction with our audience. Our next event is a Chat and a Dance with Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton on Friday 2nd June at the Lubber Fiend. We plan this to be the first of many more future "Chat and Dance" events. As there are so many DJ’s, Journalists and Authors, we like and respect that everyone has great stories, which deserve to be heard, followed by them curating a set as we create a small, intimate, magical night. Anslow and I will continue to create and post regular sets on our Mixcloud page, and plan to curate a live show like Colleen’s amazing "Balearic Breakfast". So, watch out for that stream, people! In April we collaborated with our good pal Vinny Vinns from the fantastic Night Dancing Crew as we celebrated the life and legacy of the late Lord Sabre, Andrew Weatherall in the week he would have turned 60, at the Grove in Newcastle. It was an amazing and beautiful night, and we are currently working on our next collaboration to celebrate the life and legacy of another icon. Which I will share with you Artur when finalised. - 1996 – Tina Turner : Even in your Wildest Dreams
1996 saw the release of Tina Turner's ninth studio album containing "Even in your wildest dreams", a song well received worldwide and featured on the "Wildest Dreams Tour". It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly. Introduction. – To say that Tina Turner was an inspiration seems redundant. Many people already said that in the past, and so many more will say it in the future. Yet, I can't find another word right now, so I'll stick to it. As the world is crying the loss of an unparalleled artist, I wanted to pay her a small tribute here, this Blog being a perfect place to do it since Tina was featured several times during "Balearic Breakfast". Two sides of a different story. – "Even in your wildest dreams" was featured on the 118th episode of Balearic Breakfast. As Colleen briefly explained, the song was featured on Tina's ninth studio album "Wildest Dreams" (issued on October 25th 1996) and had two different versions. While the original European album version features spoken vocals by actor Antonio Banderas (near the end of the track, following the musical bridge), the US single version (also found on the album issued there) was a duet with Barry White, which Turner re-recorded for the occasion, both versions thus having a different vibe as Larry Flick from Billboard noted back then: "the duet pits her feline purr against White's seductive growl on top of a slow and shuffling funk groove", Antonio Bandera's version being "actually a bit sexier, riddled with ear-grabbing electro-pop riffs. Check out both versions and pick your fave." Let's play the game and listen to both versions here : Analysis/stories about the song. – Even though the song failed to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, it was very well received in Flanders, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom (where it entered the top 40), even reaching number two in Austria. Produced by the famous Trevor Horn (he founded "The Buggles" with Geoff Downes, also working on Iconic Albums like Franky Goes to Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", among numerous great other musical projects), the song was initially composed by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight (they both wrote the song "The best" which was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler, the latter saying “I recorded Simply the Best two years before Tina Turner and she had a hit with it all over the world, but she only gave me confidence back about my choice in material, and I have to be honest, she did it much better than I did.”). In an interview she gave to Songfacts (which I encourage you to read, it's excellent), Holly Knight explained, "When we gave her the demo we (her and Mike, ed.) were completely talking. It was narrative on the verses because we thought that would be kind of sexy, and then she breaks into the melodies on the chorus. But she did it as a duet with Barry White, and Barry White had a very, very low voice. When he spoke it was like the floor rumbled. So, he did some of the talking parts with her, and she also did another version with Antonio Banderas where he was doing this sexy Latin talking." Issued on numerous physical formats, and being the seventh and final single released from the album, the song has been included in Tina Turner's then-forthcoming "Wildest Dreams" worldwide tour... This ultimately Balearic Version of the song is the image we all want to keep in our souls for the rest of our lives... Rest in Peace Tina, we will deeply miss you. Artur, on Instagram, 25/05/2023 : I questioned who I was before "Balearic Breakfast", I always tried to understand who I was. But, somehow, a new path started revealing itself to me when a few months ago I started thinking about what "Love Saves the Day" really meant. What's that "love" we all talk about ? Then, your sentence hit me one evening "And remember, just be Balearic", this is when I felt I had to offer more and share my so much imperfect ideas about the philosophy that was lying behind what you offered and what everyone here offered to me. Of Course, David's Spirit is all in here... Absolutely... With Tina's passing, I just read this, and it brought, once again, tears to my eyes, I'm not sad, it's just that dots are putting themselves together, and the joy it brings is just overwhelming: "My life has been full, but with lots of sad times that I now forgive and strive to forget. Maybe that’s the answer: to keep moving forward, to let go, and aim to fill your life with love. That is where I am now and I am grateful. - Tina Turner"
- 2014 – Fat Freddy's Drop: Mother Mother (Cosmodelica Remix)
Released in March 2014 on vinyl on The Drop label (ref: DRP 021), Fat Freddy's drop "Mother Mother" received the Cosmodelica treatment. Let's find out more about this track's many secrets... Introduction. – As often here on the Balearic Breakfast Blog, we aim to make you listen to Music Differently. We're trying to raise your spirit's up. And you can only rise if you're able to feel and understand why and how you feel. You may remember we already covered two of Colleen's remixes here (Murphy's Law / Lost and Looking). And, for each of them, we found interesting things that explained a little bit what her approach to Music was. In this post, we will dig further down the line! "The revolution was the idea that music was a whole body activity … the revolution of black music was to say to people, 'your whole being is engaged, your body is your brain, your brain isn't just up here, it's all over you, and when you make something it engages all of that'… Art is style, art is about style. In the past people used to think art is about content…a communication channel of some kind. Well, I don't think art has ever been about that really, but it very conspicuously isn't now. The other way of thinking about art is not that it’s a channel for communicating something but that it'sit's a trigger, it's a way of making something happen. You can see this very clearly in dance music… what happens is you hear this piece of Music and you have to move. So it's made you do something. And my interest in art is much more on that side of things - of saying: 'What can I make happen? What can I make that will trigger something in you?' What is it that makes people do something? I think it's stylistic. I think everything that moves you in art is a stylistic issue of some kind… What interests me is: what can you make happen to people emotionally? How do you make things happen to people emotionally?" (Brian Eno, Mono Kultur #34, 2013. – On the same subject, see Marcia Carr's interview here). Who's Behind Fat Freddy's Drop. – New Zealand's seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and even techno, Fat Freddy's Drop (founded in 1999) consists of Dallas Tamaira (vocals, guitar), Toby Laing (trumpet), Scott Towers (saxophone), Iain Gordon (keyboards), Chris Faiumu (percussion, production), Joe Lindsay (trombone, tuba) and, as of 2021, Ned Ngatae (guitar), not forgetting Mark Williams (raps, onstage). Together (head over to Wikipedia to see the band members' changes, only 2 since their initial formation!), they have released 7 studio albums and 2 live albums. About the original song. – Like the 8 other tracks of the Blackbird album, issued on June 21st 2013, on The Drop label, "Mother Mother" was recorded at the band's studio, Bays, and Fiercely represents the band's musical style, with a great deal of Panache: "The song structures are open and unruly – just like our live shows – whilst we've pushed ourselves to deliver rich and deeply layered arrangements that showcase Joe Dukie's exceptional voice. We feel totally at home melding together this unholy mix of disco, rootsy dub, blues, soul and electronic funk - it's what we do" (Press release, Contactmusic.com). Though the lyrics aren't the easiest ones to give themselves to interpretation, one may feel the song is a reflection upon the reality of being a Mother and upon the effects such a reality brings into someone's life. Which form that "Mother" takes in the song is obviously left to interpretation... Still, the solidly positive rhythm of the song leaves few doubts... As always, let's listen to the song ! With a relatively slow start that allows the listener to enter a new musical world, "Mother, Mother" is not your typical easy piece of Music. It's a nearly 9 min evolving piece of musical art, combining many different styles (blues, techno, tribal, samba, and dance, for instance) in one solid rhythmic trip. Though it seems pretty laid-back at first, the combined tonality and rhythm, beautifully enhanced by the song's structure, make it even more compelling. The song seems to have three different parts, and, to me, it's really the last one (from 04:27 on) that must have triggered Colleen's attention since it shares a close sonic and rhythmic structure with the one drawn by our beloved DJ. This track is a somewhat dark evolving piece of Music (another aspect we will come back to later on) that allows the listener to drift away. Soundwise, it's a large, profound, delicate and textured song, with small sonic elements being quite realistic, the whole mix offering an incredibly deep and layered cosmic experience, nothing that can't justify Collen's interest when choosing the track for a remix! Colleen's Remix. – In an interview with Le Visiteur, Colleen gave some insight about how she worked on this new Mother Mother's mix: "Fat Freddy’s Drop are friends of mine and asked me to remix something from their then new album. When I heard ‘Mother Mother’ I had an immediate idea and booked my friend Andy and his studio. I can’t remember who played what as we both played things in there. But aside from engineering, he was part of the creative experience, so I thought it was right to credit him. He’s a great person to work with and very talented." Let's have a listen to her version of the song : Obviously, the rhythm is much more sustained in Colleen's version, which seems to be only logical since her and Andy's approach was a dancefloor-driven one. Still, there are a few more things one might take into consideration when listening to the track, among which : Bass has a more predominant place than in the original song, but it does not "kill" the spaciness of the whole experience since we can clearly hear all of the other elements of the mix even if they're placed differently across the soundstage (great readability of the sonics, the sound is very musical with the horns being the only instruments that can be "seen") ; If you listen closely, and I think there's something in there..., I feel you could hear the different sounds having their own "space", to me, each effect, each sound used here have a different "depth" thus enhancing the whole spaciness of the mix ; Rhythmically, there are a few passages where Collen and Andy Yamwho? have "underlined" the sounds, its a crafted mix... ; Colleen's mix offers a different "mental" picture than the original song does, it really allows the listener to picture a cosmos (and the bouncing planets in it (laughs!)); Collen's take is slightly less dramatic because the original variation found in Fat Freddy's drop hasn't been kept, making the whole experience more straightforward. Without making too much about it, and thus sounding unnecessarily wordy, this mix really showcases Colleen's style we previously evoked on this blog. In a recent interview with The Vinyl Factory's Annabel Ross, coming back to one album that inspired her production Style, Colleen explained how Mr Fingers Introduction’s production style is reminiscent of the work of her friend François Kevorkian. Each sound is really considered, she says, and “rounded and smooth and beautiful. There’s no real distortion. It’s all mixed well in relation to one another, and none of the frequencies are fighting. So they’re filling out this whole spectrum, this frequency spectrum from the bass, which is beautiful and polished and round and bouncy, all the way up to these really tingly highs. Everything is filled out and everything has its place, its own little sonic area, and it’s working together. Then there are counterpoint melodies and really cute little memorable riffs and hooks and keyboard lines.” PS: If you own the original vinyl of Colleen's remix, you might have noticed that there is an inversion and that Colleen's track is on the wrong side (the black one with the uniform pattern groove vs the white one) so be careful when playing the record during your parties :-)
- A Balearic Friendship: Marcia Carr & Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy
On April 23rd 2023, DJ Marcia Carr was joined on the "Boat Pod" by her Friend, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, for a nice Chin-wag. I was curious to discover more... If you want to get very Balearic, this post just might be what you need! There are places you have to visit before you leave this planet. Situated in Little Venice (Paddington, West London), the mighty "Boat Pod" is one of these. A unique state-of-the-art DJ and Podcast floating studio, the "Boat Pod" (both the concept and its gorgeous mid-century design) was proudly "Female Founded" in 2020 by DJ/Presenter Sophie Callis. Immersed in broadcast and underground club culture for over two decades, Sophie had experienced first-hand the importance of bringing community and creativity together when the pandemic struck, giving her enough time to rebuild a much-loved space once her home to the community and beyond. I asked the great DJ Marcia Carr some questions about her friendship with Colleen and her experience on the boat, and she very kindly answered! Thank you so much, Marcia, for taking the time to do that! Dear Marcia, thank you so much for answering these questions following the show you shared with Colleen on the Boat Pod last Sunday! We got to hear in the first hour your selections and the way you mix too :-) How did you start DJing? Was it a vocation? Thank you, Artur, for the flattering comments about my show. I am glad you enjoyed the presentation. How I started DJ'ing has been a journey that has evolved from playing music on a cassette player and a gram at the odd family function/gathering or using the family home stereo unit. However, it was really at college and University that things "took off" when I decided to take the DJ'ing a lot more seriously. I was inspired by seeing the guys around at house parties, my friends, my brothers, my cousins, and also my clubbing experience. I always found record shops quite fascinating and loved staying there for many hours too. By then, I had begun to push myself to go much deeper into things like record hunting, listening more intently to what I would hear on pirate radio. Also, every now and then, I'd be keeping a mental note of what I would hear DJs play from inside the booth – it has been chiefly a vocation, a passionate pastime all these years. When you work on a radio show, do you have an idea of « feelings » or « emotions » you want to convey or are you more « musically » oriented? Regarding the production side of things, all is handled by me. I agree with you when you ask if "feelings" or "emotions" are connected with what I want to convey during the broadcast; I'd say it is true. The mood I am in on the day would interplay with the way the content is presented. When I don’t have a guest on the show, I have more time to share my tastes, fitting in a lot of what I describe as "mood music" (time permitting). There is always a message to share, something of relevance which I believe will connect with my audience. When I have a guest on ¡Take the Con! Featured on the Spotlight, it will likely be a producer and/or a DJ who wears many hats. Whoever the multitasker is, what they do probably crosses the path of what I do now within the music industry. I have worked in numerous fields, always music related. Hence me knowing a lot of people. It was a pleasure hearing you talk with Colleen during the show; you both seem so close! How did you meet? How has Colleen impacted you both on a personal and professional level? That is where Colleen comes in. Having met her as DJ Cosmo in the 1990s, she says it was at a record shop (Release The Groove) I had been working at, but I cannot recollect where we met actually. What I do recall is that we were both at one of the DJ gigs I played at with a mutual friend Nikki Lucas – another outstanding DJ, by the way. Over the years I have attended some events that Colleen has hosted, I have also previously interviewed her in a different space prior to joining The Boat pod, and I DJ’ed for her at her Classic Albums By Women book launch. Our rapport has always been communicative; even though it's not daily, catching up always feels good. Her approach to her projects, her "babies" – as I like to call these things that we undertake to be attentive over – are certainly great motivators to anyone who is interested beyond just listening to music 24/7. As entrepreneurs, male or female, we can always be inspiring to those individuals who are entering the industry, or even if you are already an established insider, Colleen's efforts, consistency and determination are things that would spark one's interest – if nothing else, her ethics of navigating the many hats she wears, while being a full-time mother are to be applauded – yet we mothers take these things in our stride. We just get on with things and do them, mostly for the love of it. Music has helped many people during the pandemic, and these trying times brought a lot of people together; what does music represent to you in the times we live in? In the times that we are living, music represents or should be about, reflection on oneself. Who can we help along the way without having a selfish motivation? Yet, following the global lockdown, there are so many songwriters and artists who could be making bold statements, sending out a kind of war cry, if you will, that could provoke every man's consciousness to be a better version of himself. On many occasions, I have wondered where the Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, the Doug & Jean Carne, the Bob Marley's of today are. Those types of artists apparently don't sell records, but I am constantly searching out and like to dig deep for quality music. Last but not least, you have the chance to work on this beautiful boat. Can you tell us more about the audio setup and about the « Boat pod » adventure? When Sophie (Callis), the captain and the owner of The Boat Pod, approached me about hosting a show, it was merely a matter of getting the time to produce a regular program. The show would have to be of a certain standard, and could not sound like it had just been thrown together without any care. !Take the Con! is always broadcast live, which means everything, including the occasional faux pas, happens in real-time; there is no time to re-record or do second takes. The live-streamed output takes place at the boat’s core: an open plan DJ booth set up which is similar to any decent night club or venue DJ set up, or a bit like what someone might have at home, along with the extra hardware which is essential to assist the full functionality for broadcasting radio, for all the presenters to take full advantage of. With over thirty years of radio experience, the environment is one that is very familiar to me. The only thing subject to change with every episode is the script, and that is the fascinating bit about the Boat Pod "adventure" It is never a predictable ride, only a memorable and unique one, just as being on the vessel is an experience – once you've seen and heard about it, it's "all aboard" as they say for another ride! Thank you so much, dear Marcia! - Launching of the Balearic Breakfast Blog
On January 6th 2023, the Balearic Breakfast Blog was put online. The main goal of this blog is to share information about Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's show, streamed on Mixcloud and Twitch TV every Tuesday. Reproducing the design of the now well-known vinyl compilation issued on Heavenly Recordings (June 10th 2022), the blog was created by Artur Michalski, a French Balearic Breakfast Family member, in December 2022. As stated in the "Personal Note", this blog isn't an official website but aims, nonetheless, to raise the public's attention to a radio show that brings together Music Lovers alike from all rounds of the globe under the loving musical care of the well-renowned DJ, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy. Starting amid the 2019 global pandemic, 'Balearic Breakfast' became a Musical Home for many listeners searching for ways to escape a then very harsh world, fueled by uncertainties, sad news and restrictions. With a resolute mind and willing to help people to get together in these trying times, Colleen started to stream her Cosmodelica shows live from her record room and directly engaged with her listeners on her socials. She was then asked by Gilles Peterson (DJ, radio host and founder of WorldwideFM) to fill in for him during the summer of 2020. These summer staycation shows became the reputed 'Balearic Breakfast' series as summer ended. What made 'Balearic Breakfast' so crucial to so many of its listeners was the possibility Colleen offered them to share their love for Music through a request show like no other. Is there something greater than sharing the Music you love with your favourite DJ and then engaging in a musical conversation? We here, at the 'Balearic Breakfast Blog' don't think so. What also made 'Balearic Breakfast' so important for all of us, including Colleen, is the catharsis it has been when times were getting rough or troubled. Colleen always found the right words to cheer her listeners up, and we, in return, always tried to share the Music she would be happy to discover and play. 'Balearic Breakfast' allowed Colleen's Musical soul to come to the forefront by letting her create shows with specific musical worlds, including wonderful short mixes, special editions dedicated to artists of the Balearic musical scene, but also longer streams dedicated to both cultural and natural events like "International Women's Day", "Black History Month", "June solstice" etc., not to mention the tribute stand the show becomes when a fellow Balearic DJ or artist passes on to another realm... The colourful palette offered by Colleen, the Community she created, and the Spirit she wanted to share with her listeners made the creation of this blog an absolute Necessity. Upon the day of its release, and in the months following it, reactions were dithyrambic. Balearic Breakfast members were more than happy to see such a place come to life : Wow Artur, I think this is amazing. I feel a very strong connection with Colleen, the show and its music. I feel lost if I don't listen to the show live on a Tuesday, for those few hours I feel part of something, a togetherness that's warm, comforting and also exciting all at the same time. The familiar names she mentions when she so eloquently describes each request & tune gives me joy. It's my weekly fix with guaranteed happiness in this hard & difficult world. Hats off to you for making the blog happen. You are special Artur - big love from me x (Grecamac) Thank you for doing this... Such a Beautiful & lasting testimony to this show, which has meant so much to so many. To the Balearic Family, Peace, Blessings & More. To Colleen, "Keep on Keeping on" & Thank you (Trevorlevene) Artur, I have read your blog, at least the lasts ones of Balearic Breakfast and I must say I have tears in my eyes. Tears of joy, emotion and happiness for the things you say and the way you share your thoughts. Currently my life is a bit of a chaos and the discovery of this program (as a music lover) with the chat, is indeed an important highlight in my week. I just want to say thank you for being so kind and generous with me, I’d like to write so much better in English to express myself, it’s kind of difficult. It’s a pity that I have started to follow the show in February 2022. But now I’m here to stay... (Ana Maria) With all of this being said, "Balearic Breakfast - The Blog" now invites you to a full Musical Journey with the Balearic Breakfast Family and our beloved Captain, the only and much loved and respected one: Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy... Sail on, Sailor!
- Balearic Breakfast | Episode 1 | The Landing Seagull...
Worldwide FM broadcast the first episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 01st 2020. It took 2 months, 6 shows, a lot of requests, Colleen’s willingness to build a community and a Friend's naming Idea to finally see "Balearic Breakfast" come to life. In the trying times we were all experiencing, Colleen seemed solidly positive, strong, confident and willing to take us through a new Journey (as she says at the beginning of the show, "Feels like a new era"). Also, and for the first time in such a "readable" way, she proposed here the show we all know and love in all of its glory: presenting tracks, their story, explaining facts about the production or the composition of the songs/albums and doing some shoutouts to the listeners. It's no longer a summer staycation but a Balearic Breakfast. Join me every Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 am BST throughout September on @worldwide.fm for an eclectic mix of music for mind travel. And of course I would love to take some requests so please fire away. Colleen (30/08/2020) Though the show is divided into musical sections, the first hour is trippy, and the mix helps you fly above the ocean like only a seagull can do (there is a dreamy tension in the music). Strangely enough, we keep that mental representation as the show unfolds in the second hour. There is an absolute sense of freedom, a “known, experienced, controlled and enjoyed freedom”. Talking about the hidden message of the show? Who knows, maybe! But that’s also what Colleen’s selection does. The members of the Balearic Breakfast Familly often praise her ability to create musical pictures, but it's the result of our Commune effort, which is why that show has such an important place in our hearts. We all work together aiming to request meaningful songs, and we know Colleen will make the best out of this effort. “You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you touch perfect speed. And that isn’t flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn’t have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.” Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, 1970 Overall, it's a beautiful first show, perfectly showcasing its “themed-like capability” (see the seagull flying during Ashford & Simpson's Babies ?). - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 2 | A trip to the Beach...
Worldwide FM broadcast the 2nd episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 08th 2020. Sometimes the "mental representation" of a show does not come to mind instantly. Sometimes it is hard to get. And, sometimes, you feel it in your Soul, almost from the show's start. And the idea grows, slowly, steadily. The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust, The Prisoner, 1923 On this second edition of Balearic Breakfast, not a single track has a straightforward structure or an easy melody; they all seem to be reaching out for something, searching for something, an issue, a higher ground, maybe? But it is not a "desperate" search; you never feel fear or apprehension. On the contrary, these tracks are adventurous. They are "marching-type like" Tracks. You want to discover where that path leads you, and the songs help to open your spirit up because of their absolute freedom. - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 3 | Caught in the Undertow...
Worldwide FM broadcast the 3rd episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 15th 2020. „The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion.“ Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, 1870 Do I need to write a lot to explain the title I gave this episode? I don't think so. Just listen to the show, the music, Colleen’s anecdotes... It’s self-explanatory. Well, if you need some guidance, here we go... From the show's start, we feel something massive carrying us away. There is that vibration, that deep pulse, that inner Drive... Yes, we’re caught in an undertow (I do think about Kim Carnes right now ;-))... And, as the songs go by, we keep them in our minds because of the close rhythmic (and Intellectual...) structure they all share (Colleen’s mix also emphasises this). The title chosen for this third edition of Balearic Breakfast also reveals what life is and how our experiences influence our existence... Once again, this show demonstrates the Unity that the Balearic Breakfast Familly forms with Colleen (Look at the blog’s Logo and you’ll understand...) Are you ready for a deep swim? Let’s go! - Balearic Breakfast | Episode 5 | An aeroplane in the sky...
Worldwide FM broadcast the 5th episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 29th 2020. “Behind all seen things lies something vaster; everything is but a path, a portal or a window opening on something other than itself.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery This show, the 5th of the series, is all about big spaces, freedom, blue skies, and some « Look mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky ». Each track has that underlying sense of windy involvement. You can hear it if you listen closely to tracks like El Velero or Kiss me again, Unmask me and even Big Spliff (Pay attention to the long reverbs in these tracks, the "Windy" element is in there...). These tracks are flying you away, totally. Can you hear the sound of the aeroplane leading you to your Balearic Destination? There’s even that moment in the show where you see the Island and step down from the plane (Cascades of Colour). From the somewhat darker clouds seen from your plane (Sun Rain) to the Sunset on the Island (Light), this show is such a storyteller… Please, Get on the plane... PLAYLIST Ashra Tempel – Sun Rain Almunia – Dos Estrellas Cantoma – Dix Vertes (Cosmodelica Remix) Smith & Mudd – Norway Stores Stereo MCS – Connected Colourbox – Looks Like We’re Shy One Horse Black Uhuru – Big Spliff (Paul Groucho Smykle Dub Factor Mix) Lucio Battisti – El Velero Dinosaur – Kiss Me Again Mama – Unmask Me (Ashley Beedle Mix) Stuff It – Are You Going With Me Ananda Project – Cascades of Colour Stephane Sévérac – Hold On Soul Family Sensation – I Don’t Know Know If I Should Call You Baby (Marshall Jefferson Mix) Mr Fingers – Survivor Camelle Hinds – Sausalito Calling Michael Kiwanuka – Light The show is archived on worldwidefm : Balearic Breakfast with Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy // 29-09-20 | WorldwideFM
- Balearic Breakfast | Episode 6 | The Balearic Slippers
Worldwide FM broadcast the 6th episode of Balearic Breakfast on October 6th 2020. You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover is yourself. Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo The one thing that does not change when you're listening to a Balearic Breakfast show is how Fast Time Flies... You're happy, you try to ease yourself into the music, you close your eyes, or you dance and then, of a sudden, you hear your favourite's DJ voice saying, "I'm Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy with you, ready to sign off..." and then you go like "WHAAAT" Is it ALREADY THE END OF THE SHOW ?! " You then precipitate yourself to write on Colleen's Mixcloud things like "No, this can't be! We need a three hours show !" And believe me; this has happened many times in the show's history! The Balearic Breakfast Family always has a laugh when this happens! This show being shorter by half an hour, the "time slipping away effect" was emphasised and felt more strongly than usual by many of us! Also, what you don't see here is that, during this show, Colleen was wearing some adorable slippers (the show is always aired on Colleen's Mixcloud, so we get the chance to see her when she's cueing records or dancing, or even chatting with us on her laptop, and we get to see the way she's dressed and also the visuals crafted by her husband, Adam). So this time, we all just went Crazy over these slippers :-) This is the "Balearic Breakfast Family Spirit" ! Listen to the 6th edition of Balearic Breakfast and get on that sailing ship... : PLAYLIST Nick Drake – Northern Sky Sopwith Camel – Fazon Letta Mbulu – Nomalizo David Sylvian & Robert Fripp – Darshan (Future Sound Of London Remix) Grid – Flotation Sun Palace – Rude Movements Furniture – Brilliant Mind Gino Soccio – Turn it Around Johnny Mathis – I Love My Lady (Ashley Beedle Rework) Idris Muhammad – Could Heaven Ever Be Like This Herb Alpert – Rotation Pat Metheny with Lyle Mays and David Bowie – This is Not America The show was archived on WorldwideFM: Balearic Breakfast with Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy // 06-10-20 | WorldwideFM
- Balearic Breakfast | Episode 7 | Wake up everybody...
Worldwide FM broadcast the 7th episode of Balearic Breakfast on October 13th 2020. This 7th edition of Balearic Breakfast is Important because of the musical vastness it proposes, Important because of the quality of the mixes (listen to how nicely Colleen mixes Tatsu Yamashita's Hot Shot with Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love), Important because of the messages conveyed through the music (in the second part of the show dedicated to "Black History Month" we get to hear crucial tracks like Remember to Remember or Wake up everybody), important because of the joy it brought during very trying times (the Covid pandemic was still going strong and people had to wear masks in public spaces and in transports...), Important because it enlightens Colleen’s effort in putting on a show that had both a musical and intellectual impact. Also, it is one of the very first times that Colleen mentioned the "Balearic Breakfast Family"!
