  • ‘Coffee with Colleen’ : The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (1/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 1st edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' on July, 1st 2020. Like the brief doomed flare of exploding suns that registers dimly on blind men's eyes, the beginning of the horror passed almost unnoticed; in the shriek of what followed, in fact, was forgotten and perhaps not connected to the horror at all. William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist, 1971 2019 was ending strangely. There was a Rumor in the air, on the waves, and in the news. A Viral Rumor. One so intense no one wanted to believe it. I had no reason to get fearful. I was still buzzing from the party I experienced at the 104 in Paris a few weeks ago on September 30th, and, after all, I was confident: there were doctors and scientists all around the globe. So, if there were to be a Virus, we’d all get by without a problem. Little did I know… 2020 was to be a horrendous year. People would gradually lose the life they knew; they would lose their freedom and, for a long time, their hopes for a better future. By March 18th, 2020, lockdowns introduced in Europe affected more than 250 million people; they would last until approximately mid-July. Still, people were forbidden to leave their countries, no travelling was allowed in European countries, and any trip overseas was excluded back then too. So, what do you do when you can’t go out? What do you do when you’re forced to stay home? When your job allows it, you work from home. I was lucky; it was my case. What about the free time? Depending on everybody’s interests, there was always something to do; you name it: reading, watching tv, writing, painting, sculpting. Anything that helped to keep the mind busy and somewhat "free". Other people, just like me, found their solace in something else… In something more Profound: Music. You know the song, you’ve heard it before “Music was my first love, and it will be my last, music of the future and music of the past”. So, I went down the rabbit hole and spent Days restoring my old mixes and listening to my record collection. I even remember that Colleen asked her Followers to take pictures of themselves with an album they were listening to during these trying times so she could later share these pictures on her socials. This is when Worldwidefm came into my life. I've been following Colleen on Instagram since we met at the 104 in Paris, so when Lockdown hit us all, it seemed logical to me to take the time and listen more to one of my most beloved DJs. On April 2nd 2020, Colleen broadcasted her first home edition of Cosmodelica from her record library. It was one of the very first times I went on to listen to her set on Worldwidefm. Then, on the 30th, Colleen did a request-only Cosmodelica live radio show from her record room. On July 1st, Colleen did her first “coffee” with Colleen Show which was soon to become Balearic Breakfast! As she explains it in an interview with Dr Rob (read it here) : When the pandemic struck in March 2020, I was one of the few, or maybe the only other broadcaster aside from Gilles, who could also broadcast live from home, so I started doing more radio, and had a yearning to do request shows – to build relationships and connect a community, and also to rediscover my own record collection, and discover new music. In the summer Gilles asked me to fill in for him on Tuesday mornings, so I started a show called, Summer Staycation, as most of us, myself included, weren’t going anywhere on holiday – I thought the music could bring the holiday to us in our own homes. People loved it and got involved, and Gilles asked me to keep the slot (... ed.). From the start of this first "Coffee with Colleen", you can feel that light „I don’t really know where I am going (in Colleen’s voice), but I know what I want to share (in the music)” kinda thing. And, indeed, „Coffee with Colleen” showed up to be very Balearic, even if the request part was not present yet. The song selection on that first show was splendid, light yet firm, with superb timing in the mixing process and a clear message sent to the listener: "Through these trying times, I’m here to lift your spirit’s up. So close your eyes and let the music take you away…." Have a listen to the first edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' here : PLAYLIST Snoboy – Where is the love (ft. • ‚Coffee with Colleen’ : The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (3/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 3rd edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' on August, 4th 2020. The third edition of „Coffee with Colleen” is a crosspoint. It is the first show of the series to include listeners' requests and the first one where we’re aware that Colleen seems to be searching for a path to go on (slowly shifting to the Summer staycation shows that will be aired from then on). Also, Musically, the show Embraces a „Balearic-like” sonic signature right from the first song. Musically, the first hour is as beautiful as it can be, Colleen taking us on a relaxed and sunny musical trip. You can feel the sun and the warm wind hitting your skin while closing your eyes. This is precisely what one calls 'music with intention'. We've already started to explain how Colleen sends her listeners messages through the music she plays, and we will develop that point later on, but here the message is plain to feel: "since we can't have a proper vacation, let's do this in our minds with the help of music"! (Colleen says it explicitly towards the end of the first hour of the show, but it's one thing to say it and another one to be able to share the Reality of the Idea...). Colleen was relaxed on that edition (her voice is such a great indicator of how she feels...), and, from that show on, she took the habit of speaking out the names of some of the listeners. What a warm way to welcome us all! I want to thank all of you for sending in your requests for our summer stay-cation songs, and I'm going to keep this going every Tuesday from 9 to 11 on Worldwidefm because there are so many songs I couldn't get to, and I know many of you aren't going abroad, you may not be going away at all, you may be staying home, and we don't want summer to pass you by (... ed.) and, you know, music can take you someplace else, and it can take you to a different place, it can take you to a different stratosphere, and I hope that you got a bit of that this morning (... ed.) • ‘Summer Staycation’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (4/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 1st edition of 'Summer Staycation' on August, 11th 2020. On the first official 'Summer staycation' show, Colleen took some new habits in presenting the requested tracks after playing them. Everything is taking a specific place allowing the show to find its groove. Because of their inextricable beauty, some songs became real friends and stayed in the Balearic Brakfasts' Family members' minds for a long time (Chico Hamilton – Mysterious maiden (yin & yang)). It's nice to have these tunes coming back at you when you're walking the streets or doing something! When this happens, you know you're hooked on the show :-) Some other songs became "Anthems" for the Balearic Breakfast Familly, with the lyrics reflecting the trying times we were then facing. This was the case for Odissey's "Hang together", of course... : The world is full of hurryin' people tryin' to lead us nowhere The world is full of worryin' people sayin' we ain't got a prayer The world is full of down and outers like some friends of mine Victims of in and outers tryina to leave us behind Oh (hold!) hold on to me, don't let me go We gotta hang together We gotta hang together We better hang together If we don't wanna hang together I read the signs on all the faces in my neighbourhood I see the wear and tear in placеs that I never should (where is the good?) They say there's hope (hope!) on every corner from the New-York Times Somebody's lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (Hold!) hold on to me don't let me go We gotta hang together We gotta hang together We better hang together (come on people, gotta hang together) If we don't wanna hang together The "the message is in the music" specificity of the show took another dimension when Colleen talked about the "Last Note Party" in Italy not happening because of the pandemic. Then, of course, the track "Love has come around" took us to the Loft with the great David Mancuso. Once again, the mixing is top-notch, and that version of Summertime by MFSB is absolutely to die for! The more you listen to these first shows, the more you hear the Balearic spirit taking its place. If you’re not on the beach, lost in time and space, dancing under the lovely sun with birds flying by and the ocean thumping near you, you must dream harder: let your inner child take control! Talking about sunshine, it seems this show is almost an "adoration call" dedicated to the sun. I mean, take a look at the playlist and you'll understand why Colleen included these "Summer Staycation" shows in her Balearic playlist on Mixcloud! This show also showcases extensively; in the second part, the small mixes Colleen will keep on doing through Balearic breakfast, which will get a lot of praise among the family members! Pulling records for tomorrow morning’s radio show and flipped thru my #joeclaussell section as per @_martinmoriarty ‘s request and look what I found...a beautiful message from Joe at the time when I was working at Spiritual Life Music and hosting Club 89 on WNYU. You couldn’t do that on a MP3 ;). Thank you Joaquin for the many many years of wonderful music. ❤️ (Colleen, Instg, 10/08/2020) Listen back to the first "Summer Staycation" show here : You know what to do people! Send in your summer staycation song requests for tomorrow morning's radio show on @worldwide.fm Stay cool, stay safe and stay sound :) Colleen (10/08/2020) PLAYLIST Joni Mitchell – Hissing of summer lawns Pointer Sisters – River boulevard Santana – One with the sun Bobby Humphrey – The trip Chico Hamilton – Mysterious maiden (yin & yang) Odyssey – Hang together Central Line – Walking into sunshine (Larry Levan mix) Donald Byrd – Love has come around MFSB – Summertime Angelique Kidjo – We-we (tribe mix) Sueno Latino – La puerta del sol Monday Michiru – Sunshine after the rain (masters at work remix) Eddie Palmieri – Mi congo te llama (Joe Clausell's sacred rhythm dub mix) Fleetwood Mac – Dreams (Psychemagik mix) George Duke – I want you for myself Karen Dixon – Free Nu Yorican Soul – I am the black gold of the sun (4 hero remix) Lonnie Liston Smith – Summer nights The show is archived on worldwidefm : Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy: Summer Staycation Vol. 1 – Worldwide FM

  • ‘Summer Staycation’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (6/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the last edition of 'Summer Staycation' on August, 25th 2020. The last "Summer Staycation" was aired on a somewhat cloudy and stormy day and is certainly not a show that draws less interest from the listener. The sun briefly peaked out while Colleen played the opening track (Roy Ayers' "Everybody loves the sunshine"). As we listen to the songs, we can feel a slight concern. Something is in the air, something intangible: there is tension somewhere in the music, there is a duality, and the selection made by Colleen and the absolute beauty of her mixing perfectly reflects that concern, also showcasing the importance of the requests made by the Balearic Breakfast Family! This show perfectly demonstrates that it has a Soul of its own... Listen... The last edition of our Summer Staycation Songs radio show is now up on the @worldwide.fm website with track list and also on my mixcloud (link in bio). Thanks to all who contributed song suggestions - they were fabulous! I will continue to host the Tuesday morning show from 9 to 11am BST but it’s time for a new theme - something musically opened ended. So far the best suggestion has been Balearic Breakfast. • Balearic Breakfast 2 (Vinyl / 2CD)

The second volume of the "Balearic Breakfast" compilation is available for preorder on heavenly recordings. Like 2022’s acclaimed first Balearic Breakfast album, this one features eleven tracks that drift between space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica, old and new, fast and slow. In the words of Cosmo herself, these tracks are a “hodge-podge of chill out, spiritual jazz, deep soul, percussive house, quirky disco, indie-dance and what may ‘traditionally’ be called ‘Balearic’ (whatever that may be).” In the words of Heavenly, these albums are horizontal masterpieces that should be prescribed on the NHS as they’re filled with the kind of blissed-out music that’s guaranteed to lift you out of the mundane and the every day, wherever you are. Volume one of Balearic Breakfast was tasty as all heck, serving up a smorgasbord of "space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica". Now, Colleen Cosmo Murphy returns to the table with a second helping of nothing but the good stuff, old and new, fast and slow, and even featuring our very own Chaos in the CBD's rework of Dip In The Pool's What About This Love. Nothing short of tasty! Welcome back to another serving of Balearic Breakfast, the most essential meal of anyone's day. Presented (and conceived) by Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, this particular breakfast has grown out of a decades-long fascination with the power of radio, going back to Colleen's earliest days as a teen (via WNYU in New York) and - after moving to the UK in 1999 - as the host of one of Worldwide FM's top-rated shows. Broadcasting is at the core of her DNA, so finding herself at something of a loose end when the pandemic hit – unable to DJ and hemmed in by a deadly virus – she did what anyone with a revolutionary zeal for spreading good vibes and ace music would do: she started broadcasting from her record room, deep in the heart of the East London. Balearic Breakfast is space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica, old and new, fast and slow. This is not a tricksy DJ mix, but a carefully curated selection of songs that capture the diversity and breadth of her tastes. Many of these tracks have never been available on vinyl before and the ones that have are going for hilariously expensive amounts. Forget the eggs, bacon, coffee and toast, close your eyes and let the cerulean ocean lap up to your feet. You can almost feel the sun. Breakfast has never sounded so good. TRACKLIST Mental Remedy – Omamiuda (Prayer for Japan Version) Manolo – Amalfi Drive Gallo – Abysso (Calm's Mello Mellow Acid Dub) HF International Featuring Kashif – I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) (Kaoru Inoue Extended Disco Dub) Residentes Balearicos – Juno's Dream (Gold Suite Remix) Dølle Jølle – Balearic Incarnation (Todd Terje's Extra DRØLL Mix) Hard Feelings – Love Scenes (Cosmodelica Extended Remix) Monks Road Social Featuring Belle McNulty – On the Wings of Morning Midlake – Roscoe (Beyond the Wizards Sleeve Re-Animation) Lunar Dunes – Moon Bathing Dip in the Pool – What About This Love (Chaos in the CBD Remix) A double cd Version "Balearic Breakfast Vol. 1 & 2" is also available on CD.

  • DJ History Podcast (DJH08) : Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy

Colleen sat down with Bill Brewster for the DJ History podcast series. Hear the story in her own words! Bill Brewster is one of the names you hear coming back to your ears if you're into DJing. He is no stranger for those of you reading this blog (laughs), as there was an event a few days ago with him and Frank Broughton hosted by our friends from "Find our Balearic Spirit" (more about this past event here on the blog but also here). In a handful of words, Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton published 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life', a classic book on club and DJ culture that has been praised by a lot of DJs and music lovers alike around the world (including our beloved captain of course). DJ, journalist, and record collector Bill Brewster knows a thing or two about Music if you know what I mean (head over here for a great interview). So, after resurrecting the DJ History Website (brainchild of authors Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton, founded in 1999 to preserve dance music history and create a fertile landscape for the DJs of the future, shutdown in 2016 but resurrected in 2022), Bill started doing podcasts aired on Mixcloud and also on Spotify, including artists/DJs like Danielle Moore (from Crazy P), Jyoty, Simon Dunmoore or even Dimitri From Paris. With a modern and delicate visual touch, a beautiful website and a great Forum, DJ History is the place to be on the web if you feel like digging deep into the world of the record cue-er (laughs)! I remember how much the forum was bouncing when, in 2009, the Prince St. Reels were aired on Deepfrequency.com (you can listen to them here). So, as far as I'm concerned, DJ History is a reference point, and I can't stress enough how much this place on the web, and all the people who make it happen, are important in my life. Having said that, I was secretly hoping and eagerly waiting for our beloved captain to have her moment on DJ History. It first happened when Colleen's Mistery MIx was published a few weeks ago. And, you can't keep a great DJ on hold for a long time (laughs); here she comes again, this time with Bill, talking about her life in Music (because, really, there is no other way round of saying it when you know for instance that Colleen, just like me, learned piano), learning her craft in radio shows and record shops, meeting our beloved and much remembered David Mancuso, starting Classic Album Sundays (another reference point by the way) and hosting "Balearic Breakfast" on Worldwide FM and then on her socials when the radio had to reduce its activities to structure itself. Listening to the interview is great because you hear Colleen telling the story in her own words; this is priceless as you can feel her emotions through her voice as she goes down memory lane. Also, once the interview ends, you start wondering how important it is to keep a gentle, open-minded and sincere spirit when talking to people and how being Humble about what you do is Priceless. Listen to this interview; you may learn "a thing or two"...

  • Family members: Find Our Balearic Spirit (1/2)

"Find Our Balearic Spirit" is a DJ collective whose only music rule is "there are no rules". It doesn't matter what track we play if what we play helps us "Find Our Balearic Spirit". I had to discover more, so Follow me for a great interview with Bradley Circles! Ahead of Colleen Cosmo Murphy travelling back from New York to London. Colleen shared with the Balearic Breakfast Family she would not be able to curate a Balearic Breakfast show on Tuesday 30th May as she is coming back to London on the 30th. Bradley Circles messaged Colleen with "Artur has invited Find Our Balearic Spirit to be this month’s Balearic Breakfast Family feature, which is greatly appreciated. Artur and I have just discussed Find Our Balearic Spirit creating a mix to go with the Balearic Breakfast feature. As you are travelling back next Monday/Tuesday, how do you feel about this mix being shared with the Balearic Breakfast family as a show of appreciation to your amazing show, branded as a Find Our Balearic Spirit show and hosted on our Mixcloud page? Big love Bradley x" Colleen responded with "Go for it and thank you for asking! I love how this community and family becomes closer and stronger :). X" Big love to Colleen and the Balearic Breakfast family xx Find Our Balearic Spirit, Mixcloud, 29/05/2023 Listen to the exclusive mix created by FOBS and read on: Hello Bradley, thank you so much for joining me here on the Balearic Breakfast Blog! First thing first, who is behind « Find our Balearic Spirit » and why did you choose that name for the collective? I am old enough to have bought the original and ground-breaking Renaissance Mix CDs, which I still own and play regularly, along with going to Shindig at the Riverside in Newcastle, Back to Basics at the Music Factory in Leeds, Rise at the Leadmill in Sheffield, Cream at Nation in Liverpool, the Cross at King’s Cross, and Fabric on Charterhouse Street in London. I also had the privilege of seeing Daft Punk without their helmets on their Daftendirketour at the Mayfair in Newcastle in 1997. Sadly, the Mayfair is no longer there. However, a blue plaque reminds us of its heritage. After many years of hanging out with DJs (which I still do), the universe decided it was time I started digging, too, as I was given two turntables and a mixer. My record collection is forever growing, and I am incredibly grateful that numerous great record shops exist in Gateshead and Newcastle. So, a big up to Tony at 586 Records on Gateshead High Street and Nick, Paul, Al and Sam at Beatdown Records on Bewick Street, Newcastle! The acorn behind the name, "Find Our Balearic Spirit", came through my reading and understanding of what the late great David Mancuso created in New York City and, also, the lack of physical contact the COVID-19 pandemic caused (I appreciate the government lockdowns were necessary to control the spread of the virus). So, after 17 months without seeing my friends in person, I wanted to celebrate a friend’s belated 40th birthday in 2021 in the back of my garden and do it as the sun set on the Sunday of the Summer Bank Holiday. Unfortunately, due to a combination of folks not being able to get childcare and work covered on the day, the party didn’t happen. However, following David’s philosophy and wanting to bring friends together including friends we didn't meet yet, was sown. This acorn deserved a name, and as I wanted a name that could reflect David’s ethos of bringing people together, of course also offering a diverse music policy: "Find Our Balearic Spirit" was born. So, from here on in, friends, friends of friends and friends we are yet to make an answer when asked where we are going next, we're off to Find Our Balearic Spirit (laughs) ! Colleen’s show helped me and many other people become aware of the musical Balearic scene. What Balearic Breakfast also brought, in a very discrete, sensitive, yet at the same time profound way (thanks to Colleen’s emotional intelligence), is the philosophical aspect this musical movement carries within itself. According to you, what is that “Balearic Spirit” about, and how can we all make it shine in our own lives? For me, A Balearic Spirit is an open mind to all styles of music, an intention for everyone taking part in a party to have a great time, and a desire to be taken on a musical journey by a curator, selector, or DJ. How can we all make it in our own lives? Regardless of genre or style, I continually search for new physical and digital music. Whether by a long-forgotten artist from a previous decade or the latest release on two of my favourite labels (NuNorthern Soul or Claremont 56). Of course, other amazing labels are available. Get to know the people behind your local record store, the artists they like and why, research the artists they recommend and listen to their tracks. In Gateshead, there is a great record shop (586 Records) owned by Tony, whose musical knowledge is amazing, as are his recommendations. Also, in Newcastle, there is Beatdown Records, run by Nick and Paul, with Al always willing to share his recommendations and knowledge whether at the front of the shop or in the Vinyl Room in the back. Whenever I see Nick, he is always happy to share his extensive knowledge and throw in a recommendation or two. Ask for recommendations from your friends and your community and why they like an artist, a band, an album, a song/track, or a remix. Subscribe to your favourite curator, selector, or DJ’s podcast. For me currently, there are 3 great podcasts: The Bill Brewster, The DJ History, and Love is the Message. Find like-minded communities and get involved in them. For example, my community is a lovely ongoing conversation of recommendations, ideas, advice, and who is doing what on the following night. Another forward-thinking collective is Night Dancing, which has some amazing upcoming events, which we support by being there on the night and lending a hand when needed. I also continue to be a reader that loves handling a physical book in my hands, and who is eternally grateful for the journalists and authors that document the numerous music scenes and cultures worldwide. Current key books for me are Tim Lawrences’ New-York City-based book trilogy; Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton’s "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", and Peter Hook’s "How Not To run a Club". My go-to fanzine is "Faith" while "Disco Pogo" is still a magazine on the to-read list. My niece is currently into K-Pop, and I love learning new things from her, the artists, and the dance routines. I do not plan to play any of these artists but the world is a big place, and "Find Our Balearic Spirit" embraces all corners of the Earth. When I took the time to listen to some of the mixes you published on your Instagram, I was taken aback by the Musical Unity that “Find our Balearic Spirit” proposes. It is intemporal, light, modern, leaning towards lounge music without limiting itself to that specific genre since you’re able to open one of your shows with “Shine on you Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd! That’s a very pretty nice Tour de force; you guys have what one calls a true musical “editorial slant”! There is so much amazing music out there to choose from; I do not want to stay in one section of the Record Shop. My late Grandad was a member of a Cassette Club and had a very eclectic ear. He introduced me to Kraftwerk and the late John Peel on Radio 1, so the seed of listening to all styles of music was very much part of my upbringing. When I grew up, roles were reversed: I went from being the receiver to the provider of new music, as my Grandad embraced Progressive and Deep House. Like the late John Peel, he liked Orbital, and I asked "Belfast" to be played at his funeral. So, selecting Pink Floyd’s "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" is a great example of me selecting from all sections of a Record Shop. Not forgetting that my Grandad showed me how you can link music together so it flows effortlessly creating a beautiful and nourishing listening experience. What did you want to convey musically when you started this adventure? I want to curate a blissful, relaxed, and warm sound that wraps its arms around the listener and gives them an airtight hug and the feeling that they can be their true self in a welcoming and like-minded community. I appreciate that what I try to do is not for everybody, though everyone is welcome as every community evolves and grows. Even more so when new seeds are planted and cared for! Last but not least, what are your plans for the forthcoming future? We currently have a monthly show on Slack’s Radio, Tyne, and Weird Radio Station. We want to create more live interaction with our audience. Our next event is a Chat and a Dance with Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton on Friday 2nd June at the Lubber Fiend. We plan this to be the first of many more future "Chat and Dance" events. As there are so many DJ’s, Journalists and Authors, we like and respect that everyone has great stories, which deserve to be heard, followed by them curating a set as we create a small, intimate, magical night. Anslow and I will continue to create and post regular sets on our Mixcloud page, and plan to curate a live show like Colleen’s amazing "Balearic Breakfast". So, watch out for that stream, people! In April we collaborated with our good pal Vinny Vinns from the fantastic Night Dancing Crew as we celebrated the life and legacy of the late Lord Sabre, Andrew Weatherall in the week he would have turned 60, at the Grove in Newcastle. It was an amazing and beautiful night, and we are currently working on our next collaboration to celebrate the life and legacy of another icon. Which I will share with you Artur when finalised. • 1996 – Tina Turner : Even in your Wildest Dreams

1996 saw the release of Tina Turner's ninth studio album containing "Even in your wildest dreams", a song well received worldwide and featured on the "Wildest Dreams Tour". It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly. Introduction. – To say that Tina Turner was an inspiration seems redundant. Many people already said that in the past, and so many more will say it in the future. Yet, I can't find another word right now, so I'll stick to it. As the world is crying the loss of an unparalleled artist, I wanted to pay her a small tribute here, this Blog being a perfect place to do it since Tina was featured several times during "Balearic Breakfast". Two sides of a different story. – "Even in your wildest dreams" was featured on the 118th episode of Balearic Breakfast. As Colleen briefly explained, the song was featured on Tina's ninth studio album "Wildest Dreams" (issued on October 25th 1996) and had two different versions. While the original European album version features spoken vocals by actor Antonio Banderas (near the end of the track, following the musical bridge), the US single version (also found on the album issued there) was a duet with Barry White, which Turner re-recorded for the occasion, both versions thus having a different vibe as Larry Flick from Billboard noted back then: "the duet pits her feline purr against White's seductive growl on top of a slow and shuffling funk groove", Antonio Bandera's version being "actually a bit sexier, riddled with ear-grabbing electro-pop riffs. Check out both versions and pick your fave." Let's play the game and listen to both versions here : Analysis/stories about the song. – Even though the song failed to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, it was very well received in Flanders, Germany, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom (where it entered the top 40), even reaching number two in Austria. Produced by the famous Trevor Horn (he founded "The Buggles" with Geoff Downes, also working on Iconic Albums like Franky Goes to Hollywood's "Welcome to the Pleasuredome", among numerous great other musical projects), the song was initially composed by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight (they both wrote the song "The best" which was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler, the latter saying “I recorded Simply the Best two years before Tina Turner and she had a hit with it all over the world, but she only gave me confidence back about my choice in material, and I have to be honest, she did it much better than I did.”). In an interview she gave to Songfacts (which I encourage you to read, it's excellent), Holly Knight explained, "When we gave her the demo we (her and Mike, ed.) were completely talking. It was narrative on the verses because we thought that would be kind of sexy, and then she breaks into the melodies on the chorus. But she did it as a duet with Barry White, and Barry White had a very, very low voice. When he spoke it was like the floor rumbled. So, he did some of the talking parts with her, and she also did another version with Antonio Banderas where he was doing this sexy Latin talking." Issued on numerous physical formats, and being the seventh and final single released from the album, the song has been included in Tina Turner's then-forthcoming "Wildest Dreams" worldwide tour... This ultimately Balearic Version of the song is the image we all want to keep in our souls for the rest of our lives... Rest in Peace Tina, we will deeply miss you. Artur, on Instagram, 25/05/2023 : I questioned who I was before "Balearic Breakfast", I always tried to understand who I was. But, somehow, a new path started revealing itself to me when a few months ago I started thinking about what "Love Saves the Day" really meant. What's that "love" we all talk about ? Then, your sentence hit me one evening "And remember, just be Balearic", this is when I felt I had to offer more and share my so much imperfect ideas about the philosophy that was lying behind what you offered and what everyone here offered to me. Of Course, David's Spirit is all in here... Absolutely... With Tina's passing, I just read this, and it brought, once again, tears to my eyes, I'm not sad, it's just that dots are putting themselves together, and the joy it brings is just overwhelming: "My life has been full, but with lots of sad times that I now forgive and strive to forget. Maybe that’s the answer: to keep moving forward, to let go, and aim to fill your life with love. That is where I am now and I am grateful. - Tina Turner"
