Released in March 2014 on vinyl on The Drop label (ref: DRP 021), Fat Freddy's drop "Mother Mother" received the Cosmodelica treatment. Let's find out more about this track's many secrets... Introduction. – As often here on the Balearic Breakfast Blog, we aim to make you listen to Music Differently. We're trying to raise your spirit's up. And you can only rise if you're able to feel and understand why and how you feel. You may remember we already covered two of Colleen's remixes here (Murphy's Law / Lost and Looking). And, for each of them, we found interesting things that explained a little bit what her approach to Music was. In this post, we will dig further down the line! "The revolution was the idea that music was a whole body activity … the revolution of black music was to say to people, 'your whole being is engaged, your body is your brain, your brain isn't just up here, it's all over you, and when you make something it engages all of that'… Art is style, art is about style. In the past people used to think art is about content…a communication channel of some kind. Well, I don't think art has ever been about that really, but it very conspicuously isn't now. The other way of thinking about art is not that it’s a channel for communicating something but that it'sit's a trigger, it's a way of making something happen. You can see this very clearly in dance music… what happens is you hear this piece of Music and you have to move. So it's made you do something. And my interest in art is much more on that side of things - of saying: 'What can I make happen? What can I make that will trigger something in you?' What is it that makes people do something? I think it's stylistic. I think everything that moves you in art is a stylistic issue of some kind… What interests me is: what can you make happen to people emotionally? Who's Behind Fat Freddy's Drop. – New Zealand's seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and even techno, Fat Freddy's Drop (founded in 1999) consists of Dallas Tamaira (vocals, guitar), Toby Laing (trumpet), Scott Towers (saxophone), Iain Gordon (keyboards), Chris Faiumu (percussion, production), Joe Lindsay (trombone, tuba) and, as of 2021, Ned Ngatae (guitar), not forgetting Mark Williams (raps, onstage). Together (head over to Wikipedia to see the band members' changes, only 2 since their initial formation!), they have released 7 studio albums and 2 live albums. About the original song. – Like the 8 other tracks of the Blackbird album, issued on June 21st 2013, on The Drop label, "Mother Mother" was recorded at the band's studio, Bays, and Fiercely represents the band's musical style, with a great deal of Panache: "The song structures are open and unruly – just like our live shows – whilst we've pushed ourselves to deliver rich and deeply layered arrangements that showcase Joe Dukie's exceptional voice. We feel totally at home melding together this unholy mix of disco, rootsy dub, blues, soul and electronic funk - it's what we do" (Press release, Contactmusic.com). Though the lyrics aren't the easiest ones to give themselves to interpretation, one may feel the song is a reflection upon the reality of being a Mother and upon the effects such a reality brings into someone's life. Which form that "Mother" takes in the song is obviously left to interpretation... Still, the solidly positive rhythm of the song leaves few doubts... As always, let's listen to the song ! With a relatively slow start that allows the listener to enter a new musical world, "Mother, Mother" is not your typical easy piece of Music. It's a nearly 9 min evolving piece of musical art, combining many different styles (blues, techno, tribal, samba, and dance, for instance) in one solid rhythmic trip. Though it seems pretty laid-back at first, the combined tonality and rhythm, beautifully enhanced by the song's structure, make it even more compelling. The song seems to have three different parts, and, to me, it's really the last one (from 04:27 on) that must have triggered Colleen's attention since it shares a close sonic and rhythmic structure with the one drawn by our beloved DJ. This track is a somewhat dark evolving piece of Music (another aspect we will come back to later on) that allows the listener to drift away. Soundwise, it's a large, profound, delicate and textured song, with small sonic elements being quite realistic, the whole mix offering an incredibly deep and layered cosmic experience, nothing that can't justify Collen's interest when choosing the track for a remix! Colleen's Remix. – In an interview with Le Visiteur, Colleen gave some insight about how she worked on this new Mother Mother's mix: "Fat Freddy’s Drop are friends of mine and asked me to remix something from their then new album. When I heard ‘Mother Mother’ I had an immediate idea and booked my friend Andy and his studio. I can’t remember who played what as we both played things in there. But aside from engineering, he was part of the creative experience, so I thought it was right to credit him. He’s a great person to work with and very talented." Let's have a listen to her version of the song : Obviously, the rhythm is much more sustained in Colleen's version, which seems to be only logical since her and Andy's approach was a dancefloor-driven one. Still, there are a few more things one might take into consideration when listening to the track, among which : Bass has a more predominant place than in the original song, but it does not "kill" the spaciness of the whole experience since we can clearly hear all of the other elements of the mix even if they're placed differently across the soundstage (great readability of the sonics, the sound is very musical with the horns being the only instruments that can be "seen") ; If you listen closely, and I think there's something in there..., I feel you could hear the different sounds having their own "space", to me, each effect, each sound used here have a different "depth" thus enhancing the whole spaciness of the mix ; Rhythmically, there are a few passages where Collen and Andy Yamwho? have "underlined" the sounds, its a crafted mix... ; Colleen's mix offers a different "mental" picture than the original song does, it really allows the listener to picture a cosmos (and the bouncing planets in it (laughs!)); Collen's take is slightly less dramatic because the original variation found in Fat Freddy's drop hasn't been kept, making the whole experience more straightforward. Without making too much about it, and thus sounding unnecessarily wordy, this mix really showcases Colleen's style we previously evoked on this blog. In a recent interview with The Vinyl Factory's Annabel Ross, coming back to one album that inspired her production Style, Colleen explained how Mr Fingers Introduction’s production style is reminiscent of the work of her friend François Kevorkian. Each sound is really considered, she says, and “rounded and smooth and beautiful. There’s no real distortion. It’s all mixed well in relation to one another, and none of the frequencies are fighting. So they’re filling out this whole spectrum, this frequency spectrum from the bass, which is beautiful and polished and round and bouncy, all the way up to these really tingly highs. Everything is filled out and everything has its place, its own little sonic area, and it’s working together. Then there are counterpoint melodies and really cute little memorable riffs and hooks and keyboard lines.” PS: If you own the original vinyl of Colleen's remix, you might have noticed that there is an inversion and that Colleen's track is on the wrong side (the black one with the uniform pattern groove vs the white one) so be careful when playing the record during your parties :-)

On April 23rd 2023, DJ Marcia Carr was joined on the "Boat Pod" by her Friend, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, for a nice Chin-wag. I was curious to discover more... If you want to get very Balearic, this post just might be what you need! There are places you have to visit before you leave this planet. Situated in Little Venice (Paddington, West London), the mighty "Boat Pod" is one of these. A unique state-of-the-art DJ and Podcast floating studio, the "Boat Pod" (both the concept and its gorgeous mid-century design) was proudly "Female Founded" in 2020 by DJ/Presenter Sophie Callis. Immersed in broadcast and underground club culture for over two decades, Sophie had experienced first-hand the importance of bringing community and creativity together when the pandemic struck, giving her enough time to rebuild a much-loved space once her home to the community and beyond. I asked the great DJ Marcia Carr some questions about her friendship with Colleen and her experience on the boat, and she very kindly answered! Thank you so much, Marcia, for taking the time to do that! Dear Marcia, thank you so much for answering these questions following the show you shared with Colleen on the Boat Pod last Sunday! We got to hear in the first hour your selections and the way you mix too :-) How did you start DJing? Was it a vocation? Thank you, Artur, for the flattering comments about my show. I am glad you enjoyed the presentation. How I started DJ'ing has been a journey that has evolved from playing music on a cassette player and a gram at the odd family function/gathering or using the family home stereo unit. However, it was really at college and University that things "took off" when I decided to take the DJ'ing a lot more seriously. I was inspired by seeing the guys around at house parties, my friends, my brothers, my cousins, and also my clubbing experience. I always found record shops quite fascinating and loved staying there for many hours too. By then, I had begun to push myself to go much deeper into things like record hunting, listening more intently to what I would hear on pirate radio. Also, every now and then, I'd be keeping a mental note of what I would hear DJs play from inside the booth – it has been chiefly a vocation, a passionate pastime all these years. When you work on a radio show, do you have an idea of « feelings » or « emotions » you want to convey or are you more « musically » oriented? Regarding the production side of things, all is handled by me. I agree with you when you ask if "feelings" or "emotions" are connected with what I want to convey during the broadcast; I'd say it is true. The mood I am in on the day would interplay with the way the content is presented. When I don’t have a guest on the show, I have more time to share my tastes, fitting in a lot of what I describe as "mood music" (time permitting). There is always a message to share, something of relevance which I believe will connect with my audience. When I have a guest on ¡Take the Con! Featured on the Spotlight, it will likely be a producer and/or a DJ who wears many hats. Whoever the multitasker is, what they do probably crosses the path of what I do now within the music industry. I have worked in numerous fields, always music related. Hence me knowing a lot of people. It was a pleasure hearing you talk with Colleen during the show; you both seem so close! How did you meet? How has Colleen impacted you both on a personal and professional level? That is where Colleen comes in. Having met her as DJ Cosmo in the 1990s, she says it was at a record shop (Release The Groove) I had been working at, but I cannot recollect where we met actually. What I do recall is that we were both at one of the DJ gigs I played at with a mutual friend Nikki Lucas – another outstanding DJ, by the way. Over the years I have attended some events that Colleen has hosted, I have also previously interviewed her in a different space prior to joining The Boat pod, and I DJ’ed for her at her Classic Albums By Women book launch. Our rapport has always been communicative; even though it's not daily, catching up always feels good. Her approach to her projects, her "babies" – as I like to call these things that we undertake to be attentive over – are certainly great motivators to anyone who is interested beyond just listening to music 24/7. As entrepreneurs, male or female, we can always be inspiring to those individuals who are entering the industry, or even if you are already an established insider, Colleen's efforts, consistency and determination are things that would spark one's interest – if nothing else, her ethics of navigating the many hats she wears, while being a full-time mother are to be applauded – yet we mothers take these things in our stride. We just get on with things and do them, mostly for the love of it. Music has helped many people during the pandemic, and these trying times brought a lot of people together; what does music represent to you in the times we live in? In the times that we are living, music represents or should be about, reflection on oneself. Who can we help along the way without having a selfish motivation? Yet, following the global lockdown, there are so many songwriters and artists who could be making bold statements, sending out a kind of war cry, if you will, that could provoke every man's consciousness to be a better version of himself. On many occasions, I have wondered where the Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, the Doug & Jean Carne, the Bob Marley's of today are. Those types of artists apparently don't sell records, but I am constantly searching out and like to dig deep for quality music. Last but not least, you have the chance to work on this beautiful boat. Can you tell us more about the audio setup and about the « Boat pod » adventure? When Sophie (Callis), the captain and the owner of The Boat Pod, approached me about hosting a show, it was merely a matter of getting the time to produce a regular program. The show would have to be of a certain standard, and could not sound like it had just been thrown together without any care. !Take the Con! is always broadcast live, which means everything, including the occasional faux pas, happens in real-time; there is no time to re-record or do second takes. The live-streamed output takes place at the boat’s core: an open plan DJ booth set up which is similar to any decent night club or venue DJ set up, or a bit like what someone might have at home, along with the extra hardware which is essential to assist the full functionality for broadcasting radio, for all the presenters to take full advantage of. With over thirty years of radio experience, the environment is one that is very familiar to me. The only thing subject to change with every episode is the script, and that is the fascinating bit about the Boat Pod "adventure" It is never a predictable ride, only a memorable and unique one, just as being on the vessel is an experience – once you've seen and heard about it, it's "all aboard" as they say for another ride! On January 6th 2023, the Balearic Breakfast Blog was put online. The main goal of this blog is to share information about Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy's show, streamed on Mixcloud and Twitch TV every Tuesday. Reproducing the design of the now well-known vinyl compilation issued on Heavenly Recordings (June 10th 2022), the blog was created by Artur Michalski, a French Balearic Breakfast Family member, in December 2022. As stated in the "Personal Note", this blog isn't an official website but aims, nonetheless, to raise the public's attention to a radio show that brings together Music Lovers alike from all rounds of the globe under the loving musical care of the well-renowned DJ, Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy. Starting amid the 2019 global pandemic, 'Balearic Breakfast' became a Musical Home for many listeners searching for ways to escape a then very harsh world, fueled by uncertainties, sad news and restrictions. With a resolute mind and willing to help people to get together in these trying times, Colleen started to stream her Cosmodelica shows live from her record room and directly engaged with her listeners on her socials. She was then asked by Gilles Peterson (DJ, radio host and founder of WorldwideFM) to fill in for him during the summer of 2020. These summer staycation shows became the reputed 'Balearic Breakfast' series as summer ended. What made 'Balearic Breakfast' so crucial to so many of its listeners was the possibility Colleen offered them to share their love for Music through a request show like no other. Is there something greater than sharing the Music you love with your favourite DJ and then engaging in a musical conversation? We here, at the 'Balearic Breakfast Blog' don't think so. What also made 'Balearic Breakfast' so important for all of us, including Colleen, is the catharsis it has been when times were getting rough or troubled. Colleen always found the right words to cheer her listeners up, and we, in return, always tried to share the Music she would be happy to discover and play. 'Balearic Breakfast' allowed Colleen's Musical soul to come to the forefront by letting her create shows with specific musical worlds, including wonderful short mixes, special editions dedicated to artists of the Balearic musical scene, but also longer streams dedicated to both cultural and natural events like "International Women's Day", "Black History Month", "June solstice" etc., not to mention the tribute stand the show becomes when a fellow Balearic DJ or artist passes on to another realm... The colourful palette offered by Colleen, the Community she created, and the Spirit she wanted to share with her listeners made the creation of this blog an absolute Necessity. Upon the day of its release, and in the months following it, reactions were dithyrambic. Balearic Breakfast members were more than happy to see such a place come to life : Wow Artur, I think this is amazing. I feel a very strong connection with Colleen, the show and its music. I feel lost if I don't listen to the show live on a Tuesday, for those few hours I feel part of something, a togetherness that's warm, comforting and also exciting all at the same time. The familiar names she mentions when she so eloquently describes each request & tune gives me joy. It's my weekly fix with guaranteed happiness in this hard & difficult world. Worldwide FM broadcast the first episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 01st 2020. It took 2 months, 6 shows, a lot of requests, Colleen’s willingness to build a community and a Friend's naming Idea to finally see "Balearic Breakfast" come to life. In the trying times we were all experiencing, Colleen seemed solidly positive, strong, confident and willing to take us through a new Journey (as she says at the beginning of the show, "Feels like a new era"). Also, and for the first time in such a "readable" way, she proposed here the show we all know and love in all of its glory: presenting tracks, their story, explaining facts about the production or the composition of the songs/albums and doing some shoutouts to the listeners. It's no longer a summer staycation but a Balearic Breakfast. Join me every Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 am BST throughout September on @worldwide.fm for an eclectic mix of music for mind travel. And of course I would love to take some requests so please fire away. Colleen (30/08/2020) Though the show is divided into musical sections, the first hour is trippy, and the mix helps you fly above the ocean like only a seagull can do (there is a dreamy tension in the music). Strangely enough, we keep that mental representation as the show unfolds in the second hour. There is an absolute sense of freedom, a “known, experienced, controlled and enjoyed freedom”. Talking about the hidden message of the show? Who knows, maybe! But that’s also what Colleen’s selection does. The members of the Balearic Breakfast Familly often praise her ability to create musical pictures, but it's the result of our Commune effort, which is why that show has such an important place in our hearts. Worldwide FM broadcast the 5th episode of Balearic Breakfast on September 29th 2020. “Behind all seen things lies something vaster; everything is but a path, a portal or a window opening on something other than itself.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery This show, the 5th of the series, is all about big spaces, freedom, blue skies, and some « Look mummy, there's an aeroplane up in the sky ». Each track has that underlying sense of windy involvement. You can hear it if you listen closely to tracks like El Velero or Kiss me again, Unmask me and even Big Spliff (Pay attention to the long reverbs in these tracks, the "Windy" element is in there...). These tracks are flying you away, totally. Can you hear the sound of the aeroplane leading you to your Balearic Destination? There’s even that moment in the show where you see the Island and step down from the plane (Cascades of Colour). From the somewhat darker clouds seen from your plane (Sun Rain) to the Sunset on the Island (Light), this show is such a storyteller… Please, Get on the plane... You're happy, you try to ease yourself into the music, you close your eyes, or you dance and then, of a sudden, you hear your favourite's DJ voice saying, "I'm Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy with you, ready to sign off..." and then you go like "WHAAAT" Is it ALREADY THE END OF THE SHOW ?! " You then precipitate yourself to write on Colleen's Mixcloud things like "No, this can't be! We need a three hours show !" And believe me; this has happened many times in the show's history! The Balearic Breakfast Family always has a laugh when this happens! This show being shorter by half an hour, the "time slipping away effect" was emphasised and felt more strongly than usual by many of us! Also, what you don't see here is that, during this show, Colleen was wearing some adorable slippers (the show is always aired on Colleen's Mixcloud, so we get the chance to see her when she's cueing records or dancing, or even chatting with us on her laptop, and we get to see the way she's dressed and also the visuals crafted by her husband, Adam). This is exactly what happened on this 10th edition of Balearic Breakfast. Maybe, I just say maybe, the overall "sadness" of the requests (and Colleen's selections...) was due to what the world was then facing (meaning a second lockdown to stop the Covid-19 virus from circulating again...). This show, like some others of the series, is not a "Happy one". Its soul is somewhat sad and worried, like, I believe, we all were back then... Hit Play and read the small fiction I wrote... : With new lockdown measures coming into play here in England and in many countries around the world (and not to mention an intense election) we could all use some calming and cathartic music to allow us to escape for a couple of hours. Colleen, Instgr, 01/11/2020 A SHIP IN THE FOG... Written by Artur Michalski Something was wrong. She knew it. She couldn't shake that cold hand from her shoulder. She felt that ghostly presence around her at all times, that horrendous light pressure grabbing her whole body. As the day was coming to an end, Colleen was frightened. She tried to concentrate on the destination to follow, but her mind kept on drifting away. Suddenly, the ship's alarm screamed its lungs out. Colleen felt the fear's presence more than ever before. Bad news coming in. She took her breath and pressed the button, tensely listening to the female voice calling out on the other side : “To the ships at sea who can hear my voice, look across the water, into the darkness. Look for the fog. - I repeat, To the ships at sea who can hear my voice, look across the water, into the darkness. Look for the fog.” Collen knew she had to be strong. She knew it, deep down inside. But how? How can you be strong when a world of uncertainty falls on your shoulders? There was only one way to announce it to the crew who was near, with calm sincerity. Colleen approached her lips from the microphone and went on: "Dear Balearicans, I hope everyone is safe out there. I was just informed that we're entering a zone of turbulence. Please, look out for each other while I'm leading you safely. Don't go outside, as the fog rises around the ship. I repeat, stay inside and just be Balearic. Thank you for your cooperation. I'll see you soon. End of message". Colleen breathed the stress out and watched the blue sea slowly disappear under a menacing grey Fog. Suddenly, she heard the wooden door creak and knew her special guest was around. Was it the right time? Surely not, but she knew she couldn't lock herself up, and after all, that remarkable visitor couldn't do her any wrong. "Colleen? Is everything ok? — Oh, I don't know, we don't see anything out there, gosh..." The lion cub sat down and politely asked : " May I?" Colleen knew it was the password. She answered the call... "Yes, please, do..." The lion cub gracefully jumped on Colleen's right shoulder and whispered : "God, yeah, we don't see anything out there. Thank you... — You're welcome... — How do you feel? I heard your trembling voice, that's why I came... — Gosh... why do you know me so well, you fluffy thing? I'm afraid, I guess, I really am... I must drive that ship to our next destination; the fog is all around, meaning we must be careful not to hit anything. Plus, the measurement tools are not functioning correctly, so I must keep going straight ahead... it's insane to do that with such a lot of uncertainty... — We will help you, you know that..." whispered the lion cub while slightly trembling... "Yeah, I know... I know, little lion cub... I know..." repeated Colleen trying not to get emotional... "Can you please leave me alone for some time? I'll call you back later. Please... I need to drive us out of this maze..." — Of course..." answered the fluffy four-legged spirit... Before she knew it, the little lion cub disappeared. Colleen? Another voice came in behind the wooden door. "Is the lion cub disturbing you? — No, Emma, that's ok... He never does, but you know how he is... Thanks for coming by. I'll catch you later, god that fog is so thick!" Emma left the cabin on the tip of her toes as the Sailing ship entered a Fog of political uncertainties on a black pandemic sea... What was going to happen to the Balearic Family? Would the majestic Balearic Breakfast ship make it through the maze of uncertainty? Nobody knew back then; all everyone knew was that they were in this together and that Music was also in the air... Would the pure Balearic spirits win over doubt and fear? Time would tell, but the Balearic Breakfast family was building her core stronger than ever before, and this was something its members would never forget...
