  • A Balearic Brunch with Colleen on NTS 1 Radio

On July 30th 2023, Colleen took us for a Balearic Brunch on the NTS 1 radio. Hosted live, as always, this 2-hour show took the whole family on a new musical trip! Good morning! Getting my music together for my first radio show on NTS Radio this morning. I’m hosting a Balearic Brunch from 11am to 1pm which will feature a selection of my favourite Balearic Breakfast songs and requests from my weekly Tuesday Mixcloud stream, along with some new tunes. Sounds will range from ambient to jazz to folk to soul to house to sleaze (what would a Sunday be without it) to Balearic beat and beyond. I hope you will join me… Colleen, Instgr, 30/07/2023 Colleen Murphy has been played on NTS in shows including Smirnoff Presents International Women's Day, featured first on 2 April 2014. Songs played include Mother Mother (Cosmodelica Remix) and Lost And Looking (Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy Cosmodelica Remix) (Extended Version). Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, (born August 24, 1968) is an American radio broadcaster, club DJ, music producer, remixer, record label owner and founder of Classic Album Sundays. She co-founded the record label Bitches Brew and recorded as Wild Rumpus with former Captain Beefheart guitarist Gary Lucas. She has remixed Fat Freddy's Drop, DFA's Planningtorock for the Remixes (Phenomenal Handclap Band album) and more under the moniker Cosmodelica. • A Balearic Mix (Crack Mix 503)

Packed with cosmic chuggers and uplifting remixes, this mix was curated by Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy for Crackmagazine and published on June, 27th 2023. Ahead of my set for @listenhereevents at @stowawayfestival on the 19th August, Crack Magazine invited me along to put together a one-hour set for their mix series. Just to keep you on your toes, I did more of a Balearic/Indie-dance kind of a thang and I have reposted it on my Mixcloud and Soundcloud. I’m chuffed to have been asked by Listen Here Events to perform on their wonderful sound system at Stowaway. Their tent is curated by obsessive vinyl collectors, selectors and DJs who share a deep passion for music and high quality audio. My Balearic Breakfast guest Paul Hillery is also one of their special guests. With it’s secret world of ancient woodlands and lakes with hidden parties, soulful relaxation, glorious comedy and plentiful feasting, Stowaway Festival in Buckinghamshire is the perfect place to host Listen Here and I look forward to exploring more! • ‘Summer Staycation’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (5/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 2nd edition of 'Summer Staycation' on August, 18th 2020. On this new edition of the "Summer Staycation" show, Colleen takes us on the relaxed and absolutely enjoyable side of Music! The playlist is still "Sun oriented" (except for the beautiful "Sweet Rain" song ^^), but the "heat" is less direct musically speaking, the selection being more relaxed and more "groovy" (the spirit of Salsa is not so far away !). Right from the start of the show, on McCoy Tyner's track "Beyond the sun" and also on Dorothy Ashby's sound-alike "Little Sunflower", we are taken aback by the beauty of the sound (even though we don't get from these first streams the higher frequency range Mixcloud now offers). We then enter the "groovy" musical atmosphere which will accompany us almost until the end of the show. Listen back to the second edition of "Summer Staycation" here : Your requests make it feel like we are hosting it together and we are! Colleen, Instgr, 19/08/2020 PLAYLIST McCoy Turner – Beyond the sun Dorothy Ashby – Little Sunflower Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band – Sunshower Pieces of a dream – Warm weather Breakestra – Set the sun Dee Dee Bridgewater – Sweet Rain Leon Ware – Why I came to California Third World – 96 Degrees in the Shade Eddy Grant – Walking on Sunshine Niall Hoban – Music of the Sun DJ Cam ft Anggun – Summer in Paris Terry Callier – Love Theme from Spartacus (Roy’s Steppar’s Delight) Karma – High Priestess Elements of Life – Into My Life (You Brought the Sunshine) Rinocerose – Mes Vacances a Rio (Francois K Remix) The 5th Dimension – Let the Sunshine In (Danny K Edit) Incognito – Out of the Storm (Carl Craig Remix) Kool & The Gang – Summer Madness (Thelonious Mark, Jeremy Lown) The show is archived on worldwidefm : Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy: Summer Staycation Vol. 2 – Worldwide FM

  • ‘Coffee with Colleen’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (2/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 2nd edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' on July, 8th 2020. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, founder of Classic Album Sundays and the David Mancuso-indebted Lucky Cloud Loft Party in London presents a two hour morning show today. Tune in for a motown special with a lot of caffein! For the first half of the show, she dedicates her selections to Norman Whitfield and the other half to her favourite female talent on the label but more 70s focused rather than the pop 60s stuff. Worldwide FM As with the previous show, Colleen’s professionalism just shines here through the way she mixes the tracks together, showcasing that DJing is not only about keeping the same “sound type” but also helping each track to support one another, thus painting a beautiful picture (just like a painter would do - listen how the 2 first tracks of the Tina Marie tribute are wonderfully mixed together...). Now you know why some DJs are considered Artists… Also, having a 30-plus career in radio does help in this matter, but during Rare Earth’s song, pay attention to how beautifully Colleen’s speech ends and how Rare Earth's track takes it perfectly home. The same absolute perfection is reached between the end of "You + me = Love" and the next track. Goosebumps assured. That’s the kind of professionalism that speaks to a listener’s heart. Lastly, the show sounds wonderful, though the high frequencies are cut off from 15 KHz on, you still can enjoy the realism of the sound, showcasing Colleen’s perfect audio setup (more about this here) which really shines on the track “I’m a sucker for your love”. Listen to the second edition of "Coffee with Colleen" here : PLAYLIST Gladys Knights & The Pips – Friendship train The Temptations – Cloud nine The Temptations – Unite the world The Temptations – Papa was a rolling stone Rare Earth – Get ready Undisputed Truth – I know i’m losing you Undisputed Truth – You + me = love Rose Royce – What you waitin’ for Teena Marie – I’m a sucker for your love Teena Marie – I need your lovin Teena marie – Portuguese love The Supremes – High energy The supremes – Let yourself go Diana Ross – Medley: brown baby / save the children Diana Ross – Once in the morning The show is archived on WorldwideFM : Coffee with Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy // 08-07-20 | WorldwideFM

  • ‘Coffee with Colleen’ : The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (1/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 1st edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' on July, 1st 2020. Like the brief doomed flare of exploding suns that registers dimly on blind men's eyes, the beginning of the horror passed almost unnoticed; in the shriek of what followed, in fact, was forgotten and perhaps not connected to the horror at all. William Peter Blatty, The Exorcist, 1971 2019 was ending strangely. There was a Rumor in the air, on the waves, and in the news. A Viral Rumor. One so intense no one wanted to believe it. I had no reason to get fearful. I was still buzzing from the party I experienced at the 104 in Paris a few weeks ago on September 30th, and, after all, I was confident: there were doctors and scientists all around the globe. So, if there were to be a Virus, we’d all get by without a problem. Little did I know… 2020 was to be a horrendous year. People would gradually lose the life they knew; they would lose their freedom and, for a long time, their hopes for a better future. By March 18th, 2020, lockdowns introduced in Europe affected more than 250 million people; they would last until approximately mid-July. Still, people were forbidden to leave their countries, no travelling was allowed in European countries, and any trip overseas was excluded back then too. So, what do you do when you can’t go out? What do you do when you’re forced to stay home? When your job allows it, you work from home. I was lucky; it was my case. What about the free time? Depending on everybody’s interests, there was always something to do; you name it: reading, watching tv, writing, painting, sculpting. Anything that helped to keep the mind busy and somewhat "free". Other people, just like me, found their solace in something else… In something more Profound: Music. You know the song, you’ve heard it before “Music was my first love, and it will be my last, music of the future and music of the past”. So, I went down the rabbit hole and spent Days restoring my old mixes and listening to my record collection. I even remember that Colleen asked her Followers to take pictures of themselves with an album they were listening to during these trying times so she could later share these pictures on her socials. This is when Worldwidefm came into my life. I've been following Colleen on Instagram since we met at the 104 in Paris, so when Lockdown hit us all, it seemed logical to me to take the time and listen more to one of my most beloved DJs. On April 2nd 2020, Colleen broadcasted her first home edition of Cosmodelica from her record library. It was one of the very first times I went on to listen to her set on Worldwidefm. Then, on the 30th, Colleen did a request-only Cosmodelica live radio show from her record room. On July 1st, Colleen did her first “coffee” with Colleen Show which was soon to become Balearic Breakfast! As she explains it in an interview with Dr Rob (read it here) : When the pandemic struck in March 2020, I was one of the few, or maybe the only other broadcaster aside from Gilles, who could also broadcast live from home, so I started doing more radio, and had a yearning to do request shows – to build relationships and connect a community, and also to rediscover my own record collection, and discover new music. In the summer Gilles asked me to fill in for him on Tuesday mornings, so I started a show called, Summer Staycation, as most of us, myself included, weren’t going anywhere on holiday – I thought the music could bring the holiday to us in our own homes. People loved it and got involved, and Gilles asked me to keep the slot (... ed.). From the start of this first "Coffee with Colleen", you can feel that light „I don’t really know where I am going (in Colleen’s voice), but I know what I want to share (in the music)” kinda thing. And, indeed, „Coffee with Colleen” showed up to be very Balearic, even if the request part was not present yet. The song selection on that first show was splendid, light yet firm, with superb timing in the mixing process and a clear message sent to the listener: "Through these trying times, I’m here to lift your spirit’s up. So close your eyes and let the music take you away…." Have a listen to the first edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' here : PLAYLIST Snoboy – Where is the love (ft. Bob Batterbee) Ricardo Marrero – Feel like making love sons and daughters of lite – let the sunshine in RSL – Wesley Music Roberta Flack – Go up Moses The three pieces – Self dealin’ Lamont Butler – Get up and praise the Lord The Clark Sisters – You brought the sunshine Pointer Sisters – We got the power Lafayette Afro – Rock band scorpion flower Yellow Sunshine – Yellow sunshine The Temptations – Friendship train Curtis Mayfields – Move on up First Gear – I feel the earth move (1972) The spirit of Atlanta – The burning of Atlanta jazz workout (‘messin around’ lp, 1973) Ingram – Smoothin groovin Black Science Orchestra ft. • ‚Coffee with Colleen’ : The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (3/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 3rd edition of 'Coffee with Colleen' on August, 4th 2020. The third edition of „Coffee with Colleen” is a crosspoint. It is the first show of the series to include listeners' requests and the first one where we’re aware that Colleen seems to be searching for a path to go on (slowly shifting to the Summer staycation shows that will be aired from then on). Also, Musically, the show Embraces a „Balearic-like” sonic signature right from the first song. Musically, the first hour is as beautiful as it can be, Colleen taking us on a relaxed and sunny musical trip. You can feel the sun and the warm wind hitting your skin while closing your eyes. This is precisely what one calls 'music with intention'. We've already started to explain how Colleen sends her listeners messages through the music she plays, and we will develop that point later on, but here the message is plain to feel: "since we can't have a proper vacation, let's do this in our minds with the help of music"! (Colleen says it explicitly towards the end of the first hour of the show, but it's one thing to say it and another one to be able to share the Reality of the Idea...). Colleen was relaxed on that edition (her voice is such a great indicator of how she feels...), and, from that show on, she took the habit of speaking out the names of some of the listeners. What a warm way to welcome us all! I want to thank all of you for sending in your requests for our summer stay-cation songs, and I'm going to keep this going every Tuesday from 9 to 11 on Worldwidefm because there are so many songs I couldn't get to, and I know many of you aren't going abroad, you may not be going away at all, you may be staying home, and we don't want summer to pass you by (... ed.) and, you know, music can take you someplace else, and it can take you to a different place, it can take you to a different stratosphere, and I hope that you got a bit of that this morning (... ed.) • ‘Summer Staycation’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (4/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the 1st edition of 'Summer Staycation' on August, 11th 2020. On the first official 'Summer staycation' show, Colleen took some new habits in presenting the requested tracks after playing them. Everything is taking a specific place allowing the show to find its groove. Because of their inextricable beauty, some songs became real friends and stayed in the Balearic Brakfasts' Family members' minds for a long time (Chico Hamilton – Mysterious maiden (yin & yang)). It's nice to have these tunes coming back at you when you're walking the streets or doing something! When this happens, you know you're hooked on the show :-) Some other songs became "Anthems" for the Balearic Breakfast Familly, with the lyrics reflecting the trying times we were then facing. This was the case for Odissey's "Hang together", of course... : The world is full of hurryin' people tryin' to lead us nowhere The world is full of worryin' people sayin' we ain't got a prayer The world is full of down and outers like some friends of mine Victims of in and outers tryina to leave us behind Oh (hold!) hold on to me, don't let me go We gotta hang together We gotta hang together We better hang together If we don't wanna hang together I read the signs on all the faces in my neighbourhood I see the wear and tear in placеs that I never should (where is the good?) They say there's hope (hope!) on every corner from the New-York Times Somebody's lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (somebody's lyin') Lyin' (Hold!) hold on to me don't let me go We gotta hang together We gotta hang together We better hang together (come on people, gotta hang together) If we don't wanna hang together The "the message is in the music" specificity of the show took another dimension when Colleen talked about the "Last Note Party" in Italy not happening because of the pandemic. Then, of course, the track "Love has come around" took us to the Loft with the great David Mancuso. Once again, the mixing is top-notch, and that version of Summertime by MFSB is absolutely to die for! The more you listen to these first shows, the more you hear the Balearic spirit taking its place. If you’re not on the beach, lost in time and space, dancing under the lovely sun with birds flying by and the ocean thumping near you, you must dream harder: let your inner child take control! Talking about sunshine, it seems this show is almost an "adoration call" dedicated to the sun. I mean, take a look at the playlist and you'll understand why Colleen included these "Summer Staycation" shows in her Balearic playlist on Mixcloud! This show also showcases extensively; in the second part, the small mixes Colleen will keep on doing through Balearic breakfast, which will get a lot of praise among the family members! Pulling records for tomorrow morning’s radio show and flipped thru my #joeclaussell section as per @_martinmoriarty ‘s request and look what I found...a beautiful message from Joe at the time when I was working at Spiritual Life Music and hosting Club 89 on WNYU. You couldn’t do that on a MP3 ;). Thank you Joaquin for the many many years of wonderful music. ❤️ (Colleen, Instg, 10/08/2020) Listen back to the first "Summer Staycation" show here : You know what to do people! • ‘Summer Staycation’: The pre-Balearic Breakfast era (6/6)

WorldwideFM broadcast the last edition of 'Summer Staycation' on August, 25th 2020. The last "Summer Staycation" was aired on a somewhat cloudy and stormy day and is certainly not a show that draws less interest from the listener. The sun briefly peaked out while Colleen played the opening track (Roy Ayers' "Everybody loves the sunshine"). As we listen to the songs, we can feel a slight concern. Something is in the air, something intangible: there is tension somewhere in the music, there is a duality, and the selection made by Colleen and the absolute beauty of her mixing perfectly reflects that concern, also showcasing the importance of the requests made by the Balearic Breakfast Family! This show perfectly demonstrates that it has a Soul of its own... Listen... The last edition of our Summer Staycation Songs radio show is now up on the @worldwide.fm website with track list and also on my mixcloud (link in bio). Thanks to all who contributed song suggestions - they were fabulous! I will continue to host the Tuesday morning show from 9 to 11am BST but it’s time for a new theme - something musically opened ended. So far the best suggestion has been Balearic Breakfast. • Balearic Breakfast 2 (Vinyl / 2CD)

The second volume of the "Balearic Breakfast" compilation is available for preorder on heavenly recordings. Like 2022’s acclaimed first Balearic Breakfast album, this one features eleven tracks that drift between space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica, old and new, fast and slow. In the words of Cosmo herself, these tracks are a “hodge-podge of chill out, spiritual jazz, deep soul, percussive house, quirky disco, indie-dance and what may ‘traditionally’ be called ‘Balearic’ (whatever that may be).” In the words of Heavenly, these albums are horizontal masterpieces that should be prescribed on the NHS as they’re filled with the kind of blissed-out music that’s guaranteed to lift you out of the mundane and the every day, wherever you are. Volume one of Balearic Breakfast was tasty as all heck, serving up a smorgasbord of "space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica". Now, Colleen Cosmo Murphy returns to the table with a second helping of nothing but the good stuff, old and new, fast and slow, and even featuring our very own Chaos in the CBD's rework of Dip In The Pool's What About This Love. Nothing short of tasty! Welcome back to another serving of Balearic Breakfast, the most essential meal of anyone's day. Presented (and conceived) by Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy, this particular breakfast has grown out of a decades-long fascination with the power of radio, going back to Colleen's earliest days as a teen (via WNYU in New York) and - after moving to the UK in 1999 - as the host of one of Worldwide FM's top-rated shows. Broadcasting is at the core of her DNA, so finding herself at something of a loose end when the pandemic hit – unable to DJ and hemmed in by a deadly virus – she did what anyone with a revolutionary zeal for spreading good vibes and ace music would do: she started broadcasting from her record room, deep in the heart of the East London. Balearic Breakfast is space rock and soul, disco and deep house, ambient and electronica, old and new, fast and slow. This is not a tricksy DJ mix, but a carefully curated selection of songs that capture the diversity and breadth of her tastes. Many of these tracks have never been available on vinyl before and the ones that have are going for hilariously expensive amounts. Forget the eggs, bacon, coffee and toast, close your eyes and let the cerulean ocean lap up to your feet. You can almost feel the sun. Breakfast has never sounded so good. TRACKLIST Mental Remedy – Omamiuda (Prayer for Japan Version) Manolo – Amalfi Drive Gallo – Abysso (Calm's Mello Mellow Acid Dub) HF International Featuring Kashif – I Can't Go for That (No Can Do) (Kaoru Inoue Extended Disco Dub) Residentes Balearicos – Juno's Dream (Gold Suite Remix) Dølle Jølle – Balearic Incarnation (Todd Terje's Extra DRØLL Mix) Hard Feelings – Love Scenes (Cosmodelica Extended Remix) Monks Road Social Featuring Belle McNulty – On the Wings of Morning Midlake – Roscoe (Beyond the Wizards Sleeve Re-Animation) Lunar Dunes – Moon Bathing Dip in the Pool – What About This Love (Chaos in the CBD Remix) A double cd Version "Balearic Breakfast Vol. 1 & 2" is also available on CD.
